To snakeman mike. The Indians resisted with their blood for the Land, as was their right and duty. Those troopers also bought some claim on the Land with their brave deaths and blood. In heaven now, all who died at LBH are honored brothers and it is sacred ground on earth below. If you are Indian or have blood of Indian, you will understand all this. You were assigned where you were supposed to be.
@MegaMushface In fact during the postwar area most of the regiment was formed from Irish Immigrants although a number of ex confederates also served int he regiment. The irony is the song comes from Brian Boru the Irish patriot, who was sung about when many Irishmen were drinking heavily, a different twist. Irish Immigrants were not well treated in the late 19th Century pretty much as Hispanic and other ethnic immigrants are looked down upon today.
I was assigned to duty in 1963.As a MOS 133 Armored Intel Spec..with the 3rd Sqdn,7th Armored Cav. .. we were "Border Patrol' On "THE IRON CURTAIN"..In Gemany..
I was a crew member on a M114 Armored Scout Recon Vehicle (I was 17 and that thing had a Chevy V8 in it..was fun..but the vehicle was dishonorably dischared from military service about 1970 by Gen Westmoreland)
This is the first time I ever have seen the lyrics to GARRY OWEN..Thanks !, ... (The Rabbit.."who actually managed to .."FTA")
My Mother's Cousin's, Grandfather's Brother was killed on the 26th. He was with Reno and Benteen five miles to the South along the ridge. Been whistling that tune since I can remember.
When the 1st Cavalry stood down in Vietnam '72 and went home, those of us who were deemed mission essential stayed in country and were assigned to a newly formed task force named, "Gary Owen". I knew the history of that name from the Errol Flynn movie, "They Died With Their Boots On". They played the 7th's Regimental March after Reveille every morning. It was a great way to start the day before remembering where you were.......
14 years after the Little Big Horn, the 7th Cavalry was entrapped in a box canyon, and if it wasn't for the 9th Cavalry, there would have been a second massacre of the 7th Cav.
The Buffalo Soldiers, 9th Cavalry was rewarded with Presidential Parade Escort and Guard Duties for accomplishments, furthermore; the 9th Cav. received as many citations as most of the white cavs.
Read the epic novel, "Rescue at Pine Ridge", 5 stars Amazon, and Barnes & Noble.
Whhoooo-ahhh. When it comes down to it we are all brothers of this land now. Someone once said that the WORST fights they ever saw were between brothers. Never again now they we fight together.
@USAPiper Both tunes are also used by the Irish Guards unit of the British Army, in fact "St Patrick's Day in the Morning" was one of the tunes played by the Pipers of the Irish Brigade fighting in the French Army against the British at the Battle of Fontenoy (May 11th 1745) - so an old history of martial use for both of these Irish tunes. @snakemanmike There was a crazy bit in my life when I was born on the day of the 7th Cav inception, being Souix Indian, joined the Army, and was put in 3/7 Cav. Wouldn't have it any other way, though.
@snakemanmike Maybe they have an army bureaucrat whose job is to find the descendants of ancient warheros, and assign them to the proper regiment, with the purpose of upholding family traditions. xD
custer was a great civil war cavalryman. he just sucked at frontier duty as he was not diplomatic enough and far too aggressive with the resources he had.
