i always thought of fusion this way:

potara fusion is like the sum of their ki (goku + vegeta)

acctual fusion is more like they mulitplied the ki then devided by 2((goku * vegeta)/2)

im not acctualy so sure about the divide part thou, cuz when goku and vegeta use fusion against janemba or shenron their ki level raises up imensly while when goten and trunks fused, they still had trouble figthing buu
