i have a 75 maverick with the straight 6 200cc, bought it for 600$ from my neighbor. only hhas 37,xxx miles and has sat in a garage for 15 years. when i put a battery and gas in it it started right up
personally i really wish they would make a new version like they did with the mustang, of course it wouldnt be like the original, but they should at least give it some consideration.
the first car i ever bought as well as the first car i ever owned which was the same car was a 1970 ford maverick. it was my baby. i sure wish i had it back now. the maverick was a hard car, made back when they made things right. i learned alot about the maverick back in them days and over the years. who could ever forget that trademade squeaking it made going down the road, if it didnt squeak, you worried that somthing was wrong with it. brings back wonderful memories, thanks for posting
My Dad bought a new Maverick in 72. The body rusted away in about 3 years, it wouldn't put out any heat in the winter and you roasted in summer but it got us around for a few years.
My father had a 70 Maverick. It was the first new car our family ever had. He won $2000 in a pre-big-lotto-money-lottery and bought the car. It was yellow and looked like a big banana. Inside it was all black vinyl and got hot as hell in the summer, especially w. those little back windows you couldn't open up. Not the best car for a family w. 5 kids. It was also the first place I ever saw velcro.
When I turnd 15 in 2007 I went and bought an old maverick partially restored for $2000. I finished it... And holy sh*t that thing is the most reliable thing I could imagine! Best built car in the world in my opinion. Not so desirable but a great car.
I bought my 1972 Malibu 8/12/72 and still have it. I was a kid and dad co signed for me. I balked at payments of $103.32 a month for 3 years. The best car I ever owned or will ever own!!!
You were a kid buying a new car with your dad co-signing for you....... i consider you a lucky kid, i can understand you balking at the payments, you don't think about the payments, you just want the car, can you imagine a car payment like that today? i know $103.32 a month was a graet deal of money in 72. Nevertheless you were a pretty fortunate kid at that time to have your father's support, i could'nt touch my father's car keys when i was a kid i bought my first car at 15 and i had to hide it
Some relatives of mine had a garaged mint mid 70's Maverick with those cloth seats and also a late 60's Cougar. I graduated from high school in 1981 and wanted to get one of them as a first car so badly, I got kicked to the curb instead, cheap bastards! LOL, haven't seen or talked them since, moved on to the military! Ended up with some real POS's too, no thanks to those cheap A-holes.
the Comet billed as a compact, I remember my 73 Chevy Malibu was considered a "mid-sized" car, I wanted a Maverick or a Comet, I had a 1978 Mercury Bobcat that I drove up until like, 1989 or so, it still ran good, the clutch cable kept breaking, I sold it and got a 81 Chevy Cheyenne shortbed fleetside, with that 250 6cyl, with "three on the tree" I loved collumn shifts, they shifted so much smoother than the floor shifts, I still drive a stick, i got a 02 Tacoma with 107k
those 6cy 170, 200 ci 6 where good for 200000+miles white wall tires @ extra cost the comet was classy with the thick shag carpet bucket seats order it with a 302 v8
My Grandma had a '73 Comet that was rusted so badly (Michigan winters and salt used to be REALLY rough on cars) that she lost a gallon of bleach from the trunk while coming around a curve on the way home from the grocery store.
The US government forced cars to adopt the bigger bumper (for safety reasons) starting in 1974. So 1970-1972 US Mavericks all have the small bumpers. In Brazil, there were no government regulations that forced the bigger bumpers, so Ford just kept making them with the small ones.
But I agree with you, man. I love Mavericks but I can't get myself to like the big bumpers of the later years.
Gotta love it. I drive a '72 Maverick every day. Car turned 36 on 1/12/08, the day it rolled off the assembly line. My dad had a '71 Comet GT while I was growing up. I was brought home from the hospital as a new born in that car, was almost born in it! It later made it into Popular Hotrodding, May 1998 "Not So Common Comet". I am a Maverick/Comet guy for life..
This was the first "new" car my parents purchased. This car is what literally made my family a "Ford Family". Every car everybody in my house has ever driven since then has been a Ford (my car is a Ford Fusion :D). This car started a legacy.
Great memories. My dad bought a 1973 Maverick Grabber with a 302 V8 when I was 14. When I turned 16, it was mostly my car to drive. Had some great times.
First car was a used 74 Maverick 6-inline. Soon as I
got it home and started cleaning the interior, about a quarter's worth of pot seeds fell out of the heater core. That car and I were meant to be together. So many bowls of 'lumbo smoked while the radio blasted "Warpigs." I miss the 70s.
A magazine ran a comparison of a Kaiser/Henry J compact and an early 70s Maverick, and the Henry J bested the Maverick in most categories. Its a shame that 20 years (1951-1971)didnt produce more progress than that.
I had a 1962 comet this was my fixerupper i was working on restoring it when i was in highschool i learned alot of automechanics from that old car wish every one could have a killer experience like my self with an old car
That's what I said. They were small cars, the selling point being that they were more economical. But by todays standards, they are huge. My dad drove a Comet for many years.
Mavericks and Comets are 67/68 Mustangs/Falcons in new clothes.I've known several people who consider them among the best Fords ever made.Like Thirdgen, their families had the cars for well over 300,000 miles.
Yeah 1995.00, no brakes, no power steering, a squirrel on a treadmill and no wipers! Hee hee...a decent car, not as well built & reliable as the 60-65 Falcon's & Comets but you still see quite a few on the road.
I have a 66 Comet. I wish mine had the little cougar option. It would be easy to pick up girls with that cute kitty riding shotgun!

Tne Comet commercial was for a 1974 and not a '73. The '74 had the larger front bumper.
