I don't know if anyone has mentioned this but you should check local laws. In most (possibly all) states and jurisdictions it is unlawful to create a hidden compartment or false floor in vehicles for street use. Thanks to drug runners. Cool just the same. Same kinda stuff we used to make to conseal stereo equipment.
@darter1075 I'm sure that's something the officer is going to use judgment one though. I mean, if he pulls over a lady with a clean record, somehow notices it, and only finds bottled water and first aid gear, I don't see it as a problem. Especially when the person explains *why* it's there.
Good point nonetheless; always good to review your local laws. I personally wouldn't let them deter me with this.
R U serious? How much miles could you go without refuel? I rather take horse or bicycle. Because If disaster strikes I think you will end in traffic jam... Best way of transportation in disaster situation is devices without fuel. I think the fastest would be gliders ( para, delta, ultralight) If day is good you could travel up to 200Miler/hour (ultralight superglider) without any fuel. But you have to start from some hill (special location). Then comes horses and then bycicles.
hey great project, i just finished mine a couple days ago, sadly i couldn't find my electric saw blades so i had to use a hacksaw to do it all by hand, all in one session, i ended up quiet sore, but is totally worth it the room i got in the trunk is awesome, now i can carry my veterinary gear and have room for say groceries and stuff :D
those two trucks that were shown first, were they toyota tundra right?? if so what best truck would you pick for a cheap tough and good mpg would you pick
Damn that almost sounds like a business to get into.?Really someone calls you and they have a blank car and year and you have that on record and all they have to do is glue it in space.
Nice mod to break up the storage in the trunk.. looks really sharp. The only question is why do you need to break it up like that? I mean, trunk space is trunk space, not sure why you need to have a false floor to store things under.
@silvermediastudio: Good question: I separated from the upper from the bottom portion of the trunk so we could transport everyday items (grocery bags, boxes from work, etc.) without disturbing our emergency gear underneath. Many blessings --GM
I was an Infantry Scout in the military, my oldest brother was a Ranger, we both teach martial arts now and I'm into firearms. I'm contantly trying to learn more especially now that the world is turning and myI have a wife and child to care for... I didn't read all 7 pages of comments, so forgive me if this is a repost... but if you ever need to do this again, just visit your local custom car audio shop. They will have all the automotive grade carpeting you could want for a project like this. Then you can keep the stock carpet, for when/if you need to return to stock config.
Nice vid. Is that your Tacoma in the beginning? Have you ever thought of getting a bull nose? What happens if there're abandoned cars on the road that you need to move during an emergency. Just something to think about.
how tall were the 2x4 blocks that you used for your wife's car? While cars vary, what would you recommend the block size be for a subcompact, sedan, small suv (honda cr-v, toyota rav-4, etc.) ?
@HwaRang777: As per the video's suggestion, the 2x4 blocks were 5". You can certainly vary this depending on the overhead height you desire. Good luck, brother, and many blessings --GM
Hi again...Nice work. Back to your BOV, have you ever consider the vehicle will ran out of fuel? I never agree to bug out on a vehicle when Disaster strikes....well not in the city for sure but in the outback, a vehicle might be ideal but then comes to the fuel problem again. How long can you go with your vehicle. I still feel the bicycle is the most ideal BOV, slow but sure as hell it can squeeze thru traffic. Just my POV. Cheers

@ChasJs: Thanks for your insightful comment. Spontaneous blissfulness must be balanced with a keen appreciation for nature's fury. That same beautiful nature can turn hostile in a blink of an eye. @ChasJs I agree with you, but it dose NOT hurt to be prepared, its better to have it and not use it then need it and NOT have it..... Greetings from Mexico.
Huge problem! In the event of a crisis, you will not be able to get out of town. I have recently found out that counties and states have plans to block all roads in and out. Only people with addresses beyond the county or state line will get through the road blocks. Police and military aircraft will keep off road vehicles in check also. What really scares me is the fact that they have these plans in place now. That tells me they expect people to run for the hills. I'm getting out now.
Your videos should be winning awards on YT. Not only for the obvious subject presentations but for the mechanices, ie. clear, well thought out and photograped superbly. Thanks for the work on helping the rest of us.
@hkchris1: No doubt. But having the hinges out on top was our preference. Having had this on our vehicle for a while now, we find that we are often going in and out of this compartment in order to access or replace items. While the carpet-on-top approach would be advantageous as far as concealment goes, it would still not be very practical for our everyday needs. Hope this helps! Many blessings, brother --GM
@AnalyticalSurvival I thought the same as hkchris but in this day and age if you were to be pulled over a too subdued hidden compartment is suspect, I'm going to convert our families 95 accord maybe this weekend. GOod vid

very cool idea. great way to have an accessible stash of supplies in your car and even make them some what hidden if done right. maby put and extra piece of carpet on top of the false floor to hide the trap door and the hinges to make the stash a little harder to find
Great idea. For my wife I would velco the whole mat (not cut it) to the false floor and use finger holes instead of a handle on the trap door so the gear would not be detectable by a casual searcher. This in case the car gets stolen so gear would still be there if/when the car gets recovered which they usually do.
@Istvan56: I love the idea! I was actually giving this some thought just yesterday. I would like to pursue something similar to what you've suggested -- which is change the handle, and then lay an entirely new rug on top of everything in order to conceal its existence. Awesome video! All your videos are so concise and informative. Could you include in your vehicle series some information on what systems and gear you carry in your survival truck? I'm a bit of a pack rat and tend to carry more gear/tools than is necessary and would like some ideas on what i could eliminate to reduce clutter and increase passenger room. Looking forward to more videos, keep up the good work!
BTW, Just a general note... I wanted to commend you not only on the excellent content which you provide in your vids but also on the excellent presentation format of your vids. Extremely well organized and well produced! Kudos!
I don't know why I expected to see just a duffel bag full of gear and food laying in the back of the trunk,(maybe because that's what my trunk has lol), but you've outdone yourself with this one. Having stuff out of the way and out of plain sight like that is genius. Shoe goo FTW!
Until I can afford a truck or jeep I may have to attempt this....
Great video!...As a small auto upholstery shop owner, I can appreciate the work you just did...I might even have a few tips on what glue to use for carpet installation "bought at home depot" and sprayer at "harbor freight" but since I am a newbie at this you tube thing I will wait LOL ...I sure do not want to seem like a "know it all"....Keep up the great work and I love watching yours and many others vids on survival things!
@dakdak88: Not at all -- constructive (as well as respectful) suggestions are always welcomed. It will, ultimately, help others 'build a better mousetrap'! Thanks for watching, thanks for your kind comments, and welcome to YouTube! --GM
