Our "inept healthcare system" saved my husband's life after a heart attack. where I live they responded quickly, got him to the hospital quickly and after 3 weeks he is home and healthy. I hope they are able to find peace and comfort in their memories and knowing she will always be with them.
I am very sorry that she died. I had a similar accident in that time, where I severly banged my head, but I instantly went to the ER of the nearest hospital. In the United States we call it , 'the golden hour', the critical time any person with life threatening injuries must be identified and treated, Natasha Richardson missed the 'golden hour', either through happenstance or the kind of medical treatment she recieved in Canada. This 'golden hour' was also lost for Princess Diana. Both, if injuried in the U.S. and treated here, could have lived. It is sad she bounced around three hospitals. Here the right trauma center was all that was needed.

Truth: Montreal is pretty much the centre of the universe for neurology, so she received the best care on the planet. She didn't 'bounce,' she was stabilised at a local hospital, then sent ASAP to one of the top neuro facilities in the world, where eventually she was declared brain-dead, THEN transferred to NY so her family could say goodbye. SHE refused helmet and treatment. Get it straight, Rossdhu.

If they had done these things, the pressure inside her skull could have been quickly relieved with either drugs or surgery, and she would probably be alive and healthy right now instead of going brain dead.

Sadly, she probably caused her own death by refusing to be seen by a doc straight away. I nearly lost my son to a head injury years ago...getting to the hospital asap is key. After I heard Natasha fell I prayed and now I cry over and over this week. She was a lovely person, great actor and from what I read was a special wife, mother and friend. I watched Nell a few nights ago because that was a movie she was in that I really enjoyed and Liam Neeson was in it too though they weren't married yet. My thoughts and prayer are for the family especially Liam and her sons Michael and Daniel.

Let us not lose sight of the importance of this story. As much as some foolish posters would like to derail the issue, the facts remain these:
1) ALWAYS wear a helmet when skiing, sledding, biking, etcetera.
2) DO NOT refuse medical treatment when trained personnel recommend it. Such inaction may result in death.
3) Talk to your friends and family about ORGAN DONATION, so that if you die suddenly, your death can mean LIFE to at least 7 people.

Lessons Learned:
1) ALWAYS wear a helmet when skiing, biking, sledding, boarding, etcetera. "Helmet hair" is a small price to pay for going home to your children.
2) When trained personnel tell you they'd like you to be assessed by a doctor, DO IT. Refusing medical care doesn't make you tough, it makes you DEAD.
3) Make sure you talk to your family about organ donation. If Ms. Richardson's organs had been donated, she could have saved 7 lives and her death would not have been in vain! DONATE!

In the United States we call it , 'the golden hour', the critical time any person with life threatening injuries must be identified and treated, Natasha Richardson missed the 'golden hour', either through happenstance or the kind of medical treatment she recieved in Canada. This 'golden hour' was also lost for Princess Diana. Both, if injuried in the U.S. and treated here, could have lived. It is sad she bounced around three hospitals. Here the right trauma center was all that was needed.

I am endlessly amused by this kind of jingoistic, arrogant posturing by bigoted americans. Truth: Montreal is pretty much the centre of the universe for neurology, so she received the best care on the planet. She didn't 'bounce,' she was stabilised at a local hospital, then sent ASAP to one of the top neuro facilities in the world, where eventually she was declared brain-dead, THEN transferred to NY so her family could say goodbye. SHE refused helmet and treatment. Get it straight, Rossdhu.

This story shows why socialized medicine totally sucks.
The Quebec hospital totally failed to see that she obviously had a brain injury - all that would have been needed to be done was to shine a light into her eyes and look for reactions, and then order other tests to confirm it.
If they had done these things, the pressure inside her skull could have been quickly relieved with either drugs or surgery, and she would probably be alive and healthy right now instead of going brain dead.

I don't think this has anything to do with socialized medicine, blanckepi. I respectfully disagree. The crux of the problem was that she refused to go to the hospital quickly enough. Sadly, she probably caused her own death by refusing to be seen by a doc straight away. I nearly lost my son to a head injury years ago...getting to the hospital asap is key. And I have received excellent care in Canadian hospitals (an ER in Quebec City, mainly.)
