Opium war is more about free trade than opium. There are definitely a lot of positive side to opium war. It forced China to open to the world. It allowed western idea, philosophy, science and technology to spread in China. If it wasn't for the spread of Western civilization in China women would still be binding their feet. We would still live under the feudal society.

It allowed Westerner to bring science and technology into China, which ultimately led to the overthrow of the Qing dynasty, and the creation of Modern China. As for Hong Kong, when it was given to the British it was only a small village, but when it was returned to china in 1997 it was the financial capital of Asia. Please do not hate the British!!!!!

thers a couple reasons the british had far superior wepons think about it even in the second world war it shows that the tecnoolgy makes all the diffrence a polish general tried to charge at german tanks with horses and were of course obliterated what do you think would happen to largly untrained and unorganized chinese peasants charging against well trained and disaplined british troops and then of course theres the naval engagments where chinese boats were completly out classed(idc spelling)

Yes, what the British did was despicable, especially by today's standards, but you would do well to look into the actions of Chinese officials and merchants in the years leading up to the Opium War. You may just find that Chinese arrogance and isolationism played a larger role in China's internal problems than anything imposed by the West. If you see the selling of heroin to kids as some kind of just payback, then I would say that you have learned little from Chinese history.

Its interesting that while this was happening to China, Africa was being prepared to be calved up and shared out as well. Perhaps this might be one of many reasons why China within the next few years is going to push. Europe out of Africa and if Europe wants recourses from Africa in the future? They may have to get them via China. We'll see where the EU nationalism of the skin will get them then.
