I remember sitting in my hotel room at Gatwick last July when I saw this on BBC News. I hurried down to the train just before 10PM and got a great picture of Big Ben with some graphics projected on its side for the celebration. I missed all trains heading back to Gatwick for several hours but the picture was definitely worth the wait for Victoria Station to reopen.

yup it stopped a couple of times i think... longest time it stopped was a week .. but that was only once... the other were like a few minutes i think....... but am not sure about wat type of energy

its just been converted to electrics, but has only ever been stopped once, for one week, just so it could undergo repairs

Indeed. The clock is weight driven.

There are three separate weights - one for the going train that runs the clock itself, one for the chiming train that is used to play the chimes at each quarter hour, and one for the hour strike train that operates the hammer for Big Ben.

The clock has been stopped many times in the past. In 1976, there was a malfunction involving metal failure on the chiming train. Too many details about that to list here, though. Renovations have also stopped it.
