CHINA had world empire type of power many times in its history, but never effectively invaded anyone outside of CHINA, and is the SAME reason why CHINA is not a big deal today, and that is GEOGRAPHY. China has Koreas, and Japan to the east. To the west they have the impossible himalaya mntains even planes cant pass. The others are Japan, Germany, South Korea, France & UK.
Another point is that, Chinese contractors made very low profit margin and if Apple will to pull out from China, she will not only looses it's competitive edge in pricing but also looses the vast Chinese market which is the world largest.

So geography wise, CHINA is blocked on all sides. The only way for CHINA to be in position to invade anything outside ASIA, is to INVADE the KOREAS and JAPAN. First, China's economy heavily relies on the consumption of the US and Europe (90% of China GDP) since the 1.4 billion Chinese people are mostly poor and consume only 10%. Second, China copies everything illegally and produces a lot of crappy products. This is the perception that China projects to the world. Chinese people have no medical when they are sick, no foodstamps, no unemployment benefits. Most Chinese are very poor, 85% of Chinese still live in rural areas. China's per capita income is only $4,323 compared to US $48,835 and Japan $47,642. Basic needs are not met; not every Chinese has a flushing toilet.

Without Taiwan, US would have to increasingly deal with China on equal terms. Ofcourse, all this benefits to US have little economic value but more to fulfill US's political goals. Sometimes, I wonder why people vote in governments for crappy nationalistic and ideological reasons over basic economic values. It is not as if nationalism or idealism can solve welfare problems nor social problems, at best just to divert attention from real problems.

With some analysis, it easy to see through that all these reasons, said in film, to why US protect Taiwan has little truth. US can still benefit economically with Taiwan under CCP since it is not in interest of CCP to restrict export to US. US commitment to democracy is BS since it had supported so many dictators when it feel fit into its interest.
Keeping Taiwan away from CCP is simply a US political bargaining chip to have some political rein on China and US relation in favour of US.
