@tsuuki yeah, people just automatically assume that certain drugs are evil just because they are illegal. But a lot of drugs (particularly hallucinogenic) can be very therapeutic, enlightening, and inspiring. And if you have a problem with people writing music that comes from the use of drugs then I would recommend mainstream radio pop, its plenty cushioned for your delicate little ears.

I personally love Animal Collective and respect them very music as artists but I've still got to disagree. It might not be just the drugs (otherwise we'd all be Animal Collective) but it has got to be a large influence even if its just for the courage to really let it all out.The sheer amount that they talk about taking pills in their music should be evidence enough.

@spadict Actually the song "Take Pills" by Panda Bear was about learning to live without antidepressants, not doing drugs (according to Panda). The band members themselves have explicitly and repeatedly stated that they don't mix doing drugs and making music.

They've all definitely done a ton of drugs at some point in their life, and I'm sure it's been an influence, but its certainly not as if they get stoned and then poof, music happens.

I have never done drugs in my life, shankbone, and I love this music. Understand that music in its essence is familiarity. All drugs do is open up your mind and make you lose your urges for similar, cliche sounds.

What we both should be looking at here is how nearly EVERY new genre of music that has entered the world has been looked down upon and considered outlandish on its entrance. Seriously, think about it. Eventually it becomes part of the mainstream.

@shankbone01 Here's the thing about their music: it sounds like a jumble of random noise when you listen to it for the first time. I'll even admit it. But, just give it some time, you'll feel it out soon enough. It's worth the effort, believe me! Anyway, if it's just a more coherent 'sound' you're looking for, I'd suggest listening to the album as a whole (the aesthetic is pretty consistent); their albums are sort of a package deal.

It's just i feel animal collective's aesthetic is consciously inaccessible. while i like unconventional artists along the same indie lines like Sigur ros or Joanna Newsom, animal collective feels more contrived.
