i wunt tew go to juliard when i get older i play like six different instroments, take private lessons and sing :) man, i wunna get in so bad. im gunna work my tail off :3
Contact Carl Allen at Juilliard. If you came to the came this summer you could work your way into his heart!hahaha He is a great cat and will spend time helping you understand how you can get to Juilliard. Cheers
I don't think there is such a thing as inate talent. What there is, is a driving passion to work diligently and constantly at your craft, to learn and to improve. High level performance doesn't come cheap and it doesn't come easy. You wanna be good? Work at it!!
Buddy I'm trying my hardest to get somewhere with music.
I have to stop my dreams of being a performer, to be a music teacher and help kids strive into making it be a profession for them, or even an escape like I never had.
Ever since dad left at 8, I strive music as a spotlight to get the problems out.
In your previous post from 7 months ago, you said "too bad I have no piano skills". All I'm saying is that no-one has piano skills at first. It just takes time and work. And you have to forget about being down on yourself. Just do the work and it will come! I started learning to play the guitar about 3 years ago. My objective is to play jazz proficiently, in public, within 2 more years and I have no doubt that will happen. I didn't start until I was 57. If I can do that, anyone can.
With respect, that simply isn´t true. Great pianist like great athletes are born, not made. Sure, amazing results can be achieved with hard work and perseverance, but they´ll never match results of natural ability PLUS hard work and dedication.
I can, in fact, disprove your opinion that great athletes are born and not made- with an example. Do some research on Moe Norman, golfer. Against all odds and only through brutally hard work, he became a truly great golfer- almost completely unknown and unrecognized.
Musicians can do the same thing. It's not talent; its just work. The trick is to have enough passion for the activity to make you do the work. Most people don't have that.
First of all, I do believe that most great musicians were prodigies. That's not necessarily a fact but it is a widely held opinion. I'm only disputing what the definition of 'talent' is. Is it a genetic predisposition that allows some to be great or is it a passionate love of the craft that drives some to work hard and long enough to get great? I believe it is the latter.
As for Moe Norman, he stated himself that he had no inate talent. A lot of his detractors (and there were many) were jealous of his skills and put it down to his natural talent. His stated reason for being so good was that when all the other young guys were out partying, he was on the golf course practising until his hands bled.
Hard work will get you there. The 'talent' comes from wanting to do the hard work.
He must have had a natural talent whether he realised it himself or not or he wouldn´t be practising that hard. All I am saying is if you aim at the top of your chosen instrument talent plus hard work
will get you there (some luck won´t hurt either).Just work however hard won´t do it.
heh.... i have a BIG passion for music -w-

Yes sir, I definitely understand that.
You can do it.
I'm self taught in everything musically.
I know I don't have doubts, I just have facts.
If I can do it, I can.
I'll work it.

That's an opinion; impossible to prove as fact.

Was that supposed to be a clever response?

Sorry, you did not disprove the fact that nearly all great musicians were prodigies.
And I never disputed the value of hard work. Are you saying that Moe Norman had no talent to begin with ?..

I agree with you that passion for the music and the talent are one and the same. But certain genetic characteristics
such as exellent ear, total recall and natural finger dexterity mark the child as musically gifted before he(she) even begin to study.
vova47 2 years ago
I guess we'll just have to agree that we disagree.
droberts002 2 years ago
You've got a point with the prodigies.
