  • Tom Jones is thinking, "This guy's kind of weird..." Lol.......

  • Joe has a cattle ranch in Crawford Colorado Have seen him fishing a few times

  • Tom Jones is ok singer, but could be a bit more masculine for my personal taste. But I love Love love Joe Cocker,,, younger years and/or today! Just can't get enough of JC voice and style.

In Joe's interview with Tavis Smiley (YouTube), when asked about his movements, Joe says he never played a musical instrument, just "feels" the music in his own way.

  • Joe is a cool dude

  • OMG, what a odd couple, but they get it on....

  • I love them

  • is he a sevant?

  • fantastici!!!! amo le basette di joe ;-)))

  • Straight laced guy like Tom Jones really doesn't mesh with Cocker's sense of rhythm. It's like pairing Robert Smith with Willie Nelson .

  • Looking back, I think Joe Cocker was my first crush but I fufilled it with Eddie Vedder since I grew up in the 90's, lol! Joe kicks Eddie's ass everyday.. but you've gotta get where I'm coming from!

  • god i love the clothes and hair style...

if i walk like this today they would bully me the shit out of me.

I wish the times come baack.

  • If you like Tom Jones, more power to ya. I'll never own one of his records. But Joe? You bet your ass!

  • @MattHatter Get Praise and Blame. You won't be sorry. The ONLY Tom Jones album I have. Take a look at Burning Hell on the Letterman show. It's here. At 70 years of age he finally got it. :)

  • Joe does indeed look like he has some kind of Palsy or something. The guy is the epitomy of British blues singer.

  • Joe had some wicked "Highwaters" ..... He was waiting for a flood

  • Joe Cocker is the male version of Janis Joplin , both had the ruggered jerky moves , when they sing . Both were soulful singers. Thumbs up , if you agree.

  • The early 70's were the best of times, we had some great artists and musicians, and Joe was a force unto himself. As someone mentioned earlier, he was actually a good looking guy at that time. His movements were, to me, how he really got into and intrepteted the music. I saw him at UT in Austin back then and he was fabulous, the highlight of the show for me, and the show also included Santana and ZZ Top.

  • Hosto

  • 1:00 - 1:06

  • @karolecampesine lol, epic face.

  • wow, some people in the comments section here need to slow down on the Kool-Aid

  • Musically, this has to be the equivalent to the movie Twins with Danny DeVito and Arnold Schwarzeneger

  • @jasbigj Wow, that's a quote! I guess Tom is Danny? Good one, man!

  • this man is just crazy - look at his performance! :D

  • You will notice that Tom nearly always copies his guests singing---watch the Janis duest.....same thing here with Joe. Those pants! Still, Joe outsings him in every way.

  • @warriordrum Quote: "You will notice that Tom nearly always copies his guests singing ..."

I do not notice any of that in this video, warriordrum. Maybe with Janis Joplin

  • 1969?1970??????

  • @CHACHOU33 This episode aired February 19th 1970.

  • I'm so sorry, but Joe Crocker HAS TO BE disabled in some kinda' way! He was much older and I, much younger the first time I ever saw him perform and I thought that. My Mom said, "That's what happens when you do too many drugs!" Hell, it was the 60's after all. But it looks like he's always been that way. It ain't just "left handed air guitar".

  • @issymudd Hey issymudd....Joe's not disabled at all. He has a slight facial tic from having Bells' palsy as a child. The strange and irratic movements he did as a youth were to mimic playing guitar - he just really felt the music - really let it flow through him.

  • Why did Tom Jones have to sing with his guests?

  • cave dwellers

  • I wish somebody had this entire video posted. I love it!

  • Joe Cocker was actually very handsome as a young guy. You just could never tell it due to all the dramatic facial tic and expressions he displayed while performing. I saw him live in 1973 - front row - I could have reached out and touched him - man oh man that dude can sing - what a performance. They don't make 'em like Joe any longer. A really gifted artist.

  • @Lonestarry hey was that in philly ? it was in 72 or 73 i saw him , ( trying to remember if i was in 10th or 11th grade ) , it was my first concert ever man ( joe cocker and dave mason ) in the philadelphia spectrum , what a night!!! , awesome concert , still listen to them both !!

  • @m55sdn No, M55sdn - it was in Fort Worth, Texas. What a show - the second best concert I've ever been to. The first best was Cream (Ginger Baker on Drums, Eric Clapton on lead guitar and backup vocals, and the maistro of male singers - Jack Bruce, on base and lead vocals. I was first row - and still to this day - when I think of that show I get tingles.

  • @Lonestarry Just out of curiosity, if you are 39yrs old, you would have been what,,, 2yrs old when you saw him live in '73? Just sayin'.

  • @Jackle61 sorry to burst your bubble there Sherlock...but in fact....my sister is the one who wrote those comments. She is 52 years old and she is the one who saw Joe Cocker in 1973. She frequently uses my username on YouTube to make comments. Sorry to disappoint you. Bet you thought you were really onto something. lol. GET A LIFE.

  • @Lonestarry Nope, no bubble to burst,,, didn't think I was really on to something,,, not disappointed,, just noticed something funky about the numbers and was curious. No reason to get upity about it. I appreciate your concern but, I don't need a life, I already have an extremely comfortable one.

  • If I ever get down and need a lift in the spirits, I will turn to this Tube, Thanks Pam for sending it to me, Thanks Joe Cool and Tom Jones! hahahhaah I love it...

  • 1980BUNNZZADED You are so very right. And I was only a child when this was taped. Music kinda' started stinkin' around 1980 ish. I mean, it had a great beat, and you could dance to it but.... OMG!!!!! I can't listen to the new stuff anymore. ; )

  • I can't get enough of this shit. God music has declined.

  • great duo!

  • Judging from the artists he had on his show (Cocker, Joplin, Aretha), I'd say Tom Jones appreciated a great singer as much as anyone and thoroughly enjoyed singing with them.

  • They plugged him into the socket, you just cant see the wires

  • Joe Cocker-excellent as usual but always reminds me a bit of Catweezle!

  • Check out the air guitar at 0:33! Great performance, despite me not being a huge Tom Jones fan! Joe Cocker, as always is great

  • Wow! Cocker is brilliant in this vid. Looks like he's about to spit some pea soup towards the end. Good stuff....

  • I believe in Joe Cocker.

  • @Pepelukeriaunapolla Iactually bumped into Joe at

  • grande Joe! ...e' sempre un piacere ritrovarti! al top!

  • Joe Cocker was not disabled. He's playing left-handed "air BASS guitar" - note his right hand is fretting the notes and his left hand fingers are down - plucking the strings as a bass player does. You can check it out in "Woodstock" as well. I was in a band at the time, and it was uncool to be slick like Tom Jones and very cool to be "moved" by the music in any bizarre way you felt - sometimes the more bizarre the better!

  • @TheCanadaSam You tell it, brother!

  • @TheCanadaSam yes. i play bass and he did an excellent performance of air bass. very soulful with rhythm melody.

  • @TheCanadaSam So, having a bowel movement in your pants wouldn't be out of the question?

  • @TheCanadaSam Lol

  • I am transfixed by Tom Jones' high waisted blue pants...they must have dressed him to distract attention from Joe Cocker...maybe...

  • Wow Man! Check out the tv shows back then. And now we have "American Idols". pfff...

  • Cocker's mannerisms, depending on which of a few competing stories are the real one, were the result either of a pre-existing condition or an accident he'd been in. Whichever one it was, it surely should occur to anyone but an exceptionally slow 8 year old that the least likely possibility was that he was doing "Epileptic Dude" in an effort to be a plausible front man/lead singer-type. I know this was before many of the posters here were born, but Christ, c'mon!

  • God he's weird to watch but man can he sing~go Joe!

  • LOL. I don't think a performer today could get away with Joe Cocker physical style unless they were truly disabled....it otherwise seems almost making fun of the handicapped. Or am I unaware of something about him that maybe I should know?

  • LOL - i agree

  • Cocker & this band were friggin' brilliant in this era (never seen 'em at Woodstock???) they obviously had to tone down their schtick for The TJ Show, come on!!

  • Classic Joe Cocker!

  • waht the fuck was/is the matter him? Tom Jones carried the whole song!

  • To skilletchops: Oh bullshit! Tom Jones, if anything, is absolutely going OVER THE TOP with his vocals, like he pretty much did with every song he sung. His performance with Janis is quite good, they played off each other well. But Tom doesn't have Joe's gruff soul that this song needs. He's far too "polished" sounding. Dude do yourself a favor and watch "Mad Dogs and Englishmen" if you haven't already and see what Joe was all about. Or just check his Woodstock performance!

  • Theres a spastic o the stage...lol ..oh its joe cocker

  • LMAO i have always called Joe a spaziod but like the rest such as joplin, hendrix ,moody blues ect...ect...ect he is one of the greats........ Peace Teri (~_~)

  • wow look at 0.34 i did not no they had guitar hero in 1969

  • cocker was the worlds greatest air guitarist

  • never said he was bad

  • 1:03 Just spine tingling!!! Go Joe :)

I like Tom too, but I didn't like him with Joe..But thanks for posting anyway. Interesting :)

  • No comment. Wonder who got more lovin'?

  • Great Leon Russell song!

  • Holy mother of mercy! I've never heard anything rock like those two on the chorus. Geez! What a surprise! What a treat! Yowzah!

  • I recall '70? this broadcast. If memory serves me correct,Jones and Cocker did a high voltage, free wheeling medley of their greatest hits on the show, that rocked the house down. I'll never forget it.

  • Great rock musicians...

  • Henry McCullough on guitar, Alan Spenner on bass and Bruce Rowland on drums known as the Grease Band, were the main musicians on the original Jesus Christ Superstar LP with singers Ian Gillian and Murray Head.

  • has anyone got the Grease Band on other tv appearances?

  • Great video...!!! cheers from Argentina...!

  • I would have never guessed these two could mesh this well. Nicely done. Thanks for the footage!

  • love the air guitar! No one else actually did it onstage!

  • i dont think joe's playing air guitar lol

  • Well, he is at 1:19, but most of it does seem to be his unique stage presence! Joe and Tom mesh well because they are both basically blues-based singers.

  • He is playing air guitar. he did it long before became a fab. Check the movie Across The Universe based on the Beatles. See how Joe plays a subtle and with class air guitar. AMAZING STUFF and then with his powerful voice.

  • lest we think John Belushi was exaggerating...

  • OMFG! I remember watching this when I was about 10 years old. My folks thought it was demonic. HA Ha!

  • Is there anyone Tom hasnt sung with?

What a life that man has had.

  • Haha! Up up and awwayyyyyy!

  • haha! omg Joe looks kinda like my dad!! In 1970-somethin! LOL !

    Ahhww! Love ya Dad.

  • What I was really saying is how thew kids at school used to tell stories, in the sixties, like the one about Macca being dead.

  • LOL! OMG check it OUT!!! I love you to death JOE but you crack me the heck up watching you!!!! And TOM JONES LOL LOL LOL I never did care much for him but I got a good laugh from watching this!!!

  • A friend of mine at school said that Joe Cocker was epileptic and I liked his trousers, Heh heh

  • I'd like a dollar for every time I've heard that nonsense about epilepsy.

He was the drummer in his first band and got into the habit of beating out the rhythm whenever he sang solo. (Source: his authorised biography "Joe Cocker" by JD Bean -- a great read for any Cocker fan.)

  • Hahhaha! Such a strange singing way!

  • Tom sounds good but a bit CORNBALL on the dancing there.

  • Nice pants Joe! Seriously, as a die hard fan, these two Welshmen were damn near first in line when the Vocal Talent for White Boys train pulled into town...

  • Joe's not Welsh. He's from Sheffield.

  • OOPS! Sorry, my bad... You are absolutely right!

  • ha ha.... that acid I dropped in 1969 is finally kicking in...

  • Loved this, wish they would have finished the song.

  • Both voices have influenced me greatly, along with many others such as Janis Joplin, Ray Charles, Steve Winwood, Robert plant, Aretha franklin, etc. These two stood out more than any other to me, growing up...and I'm just some 18-year-old chick!

  • And don't forget Joe is the original air guitar player!

  • Serious sideburns...I love me some Joe Cocker for sure!

  • Joe looks like a drugged-out spastic. Very entertaining.

  • Joe's movements are a combination of air guitar and drumming with some heavy toe-tappin' thrown in for good measure..

  • Simply, WONDERFUL!

  • Awesome!

  • great song! (but joe's dance step really freaks me out!)

  • Cocker sang like that from day one and drugs had nothing to do with it. (lol) It was his own unique style. He would be the first to admit that his sound was infuenced by the Great Ray Charles!

  • what song is this?

  • Delta Lady

  • You know, whenever i perform, people usually come up to me and say "wow, you were making some really funny faces when you were playing that song. It looked like you were mad up there" but really, i dont even notice that im making those weird faces when i play. So I tell them that when I make those faces, it is me reacting to the music that I play, me bearing my heart and soul through the music. I think that is the same thing that Joe Cocker does with all his crazy movements.

  • Tom sounds, and looks, a bit of a tweety standing next to the all time GREAT... JOE COCKER........

TOM admired Joe Cocker and has recorded some of his songs

and cocker is still singing them today..

  • I like who funny he moves his body...it is very entertaining!

  • Joe Cocker was a healthy robust kid. He never suffered any disabiltating diseases. The movements he does are all part of the feeling he needs to get the soul & emotion out!!!

  • That's all they have of that. That was a tremendous duet!!! For those jumping into Joe Cocker's s__t about the way he moves keep this in mind: he suffered from a couple of nearly disabling diseases when he was young including, I think, polio and the like. The fact that he's made it as far as he has is a real tribute to him.

  • ah yes, best duo of all time. I remember the notorious reno-woodstock tour. old ladies making love with hippies. ah, but those were different times after all..

  • wow that's wierd....

  • thats fuckin funny

  • There used to be a version of Joe doing The Letter on this show with The Grease band but it's GONE now? Anyone know the one I mean?

  • Ah, what a turn off - where is the rest of it?

  • whats with the negativity. this aint competiton its collaboration. its pure entertainemtn from 2 geniuses and pure rock n roll. sit back and enjoy the ride

  • What a hilarious contrast...

  • I love them both to death but that was'nt working, you're right.

  • What happened to the rest of the song??

  • toms got range but a curious mismatch of tone with Joe its like a soul singer and stage singer singing the same song ... ho hum just thought i d mention it

  • Anybody know the words to this song..?

  • Yes,I DO...........

  • yeah, by heart. I was 17 when I bought the album.

  • I LOVE JOE COCKER

  • I think, lol, this was the moment when my folks realized who I'd seen at the Seattle Arena 1970, and they were not amused. I was 14 at the time, and went alone. Dad dropped me off and picked me up Sunday night.

All I saw and heard was Joe, sigh. Been a long time, and we're both still here.

One of the constants in my universe.

    Love ya, Joe!

  • look at how normal tom looks next to joe tho.. lol!! i love tom!!

  • I`ve seen the rest of this and basically Joe Cocker blows Tom Jones away !!! om Jones has got a great voice but when he sung with Janis Joplin and Joe Cocker he was totally out of his depth !!! but for a square he can sing !!

  • hands down ...couldn't agree more!!!

  • So SAD... These ' BLOKES' Needed to be given another 18 Bars! They were Just Getting into this Melody. Needfully, One of the fellows from Abrivigineah, in Wales & The other from Sheffield, ( U.K.) in the Midlands.

-- (probably fooled most of the Viewers.. as They BOTH Sound & Act WELSH !!).

  • yeah wheres the bridge? joe holding his own with tom jones.excellent!

  • Why cut short? Thanks for posting. I was dying to hear the bridge! Joe in his absolute prime.

  • it still amaze me how two british dudes can sing with more soul than most american artists
