Another rare treat from THe Kinks i've never heard before..Even their b sides are just littered with gems..Dave Davies was a really good songwriter..Thanx for uploading :)
I first heard this one as a bonus track when The Kinks pre-RCA catalog got remastered and reissued on CD on the Castle label. It was a bonus track on the "Arthur" CD and I absolutely FLIPPED FOR IT! So catchy and so solid. Instantly became what I like to call a "repeat" favorite. You just hit the repeat button over and over and over.
B-side? This song should be a double A side! I listen to it 3-4 times over cuz it's so good! Dave davies is the man! To think he wrote the best (well, my favorite anyway) Kinks tune! Quite a mean feat considering who his brother is!
@beakeral - all I can say to help is that it's on the double LP 'The Kinks Are Well Well Respected Men' released about 1987, because that's where I know it from - indeed, that's one of my most valued discs.
This is a stunning track. I thought it was ont The Great Lost Kinks Album and was massively disappointed, on finding my own long-lost copy, that it isn't - I know I used to own it somewhere, no idea where. How the hell this could be so rare is a mystery, this should be an acknowledged classic.
What a deep, sad song. Anyway it's a pleasure to listen to it, reminds me the old and good times when Dave still was involved in the group singing and writing sweet and beautiful songs.
I've been traveling a long time, To be just where you are. In dreams I have seen you, But you are so very far. How long must I travel on, To be just where you are? How long must I travel on, To be just where you are? I was your friend, I was a fool, I feel for you, though we're far apart. I see your face, Lost without trace, I see your mind, just an empty space.
wow wow wow...that's pretty much all i say when i listen to the kinks because they blow me away and leave me speechless every damn time...perfection...every performance, every recording, every song, every note, every lyric...
Oh Dave, thank God you were there to strap your amplifier on to Ray and remind him of what you were all about !
I read someplace a quote by Dave which said that he used to get "bored practicing" - a lot of those aggressive solos when the Kinks started off was seat of the pants stuff. Ray was the one more "schooled" in music. Dave is a raw pure "feel" performer.
I'm really sorry, but these things freak me out sooo much!

God save Dave Davies! Can't wait for Dave tobe back touring again. His solo shows were so good. Total Raw Rock & Roll moments, like opening feedback & distorton you heard of "I Need You" and his version of I'm Not Like Everbody Else sent shivers down my spine. Wicked Annbella, Funny Face, just amazing, guiar solos! And when he closed his shows with the 1234 punch of a Ramones show with David Watts, Father Christmas and Money, WOW. - Frank Lima,The Montvale,New Jersey Hillbilly Boy aka Dan the Fan
This and most of Dave's best mid to late 60's songs were written about his former girlfriend Sue, who had his child. They were split up and kept apart by the deception their respective families - a sad story. Dave didn't meet the child for several decades.
yeah, most people don't realize that when they brought out You Really Got me and came into the spotlight that Dave was only 16 years old. Ray was the much older bro and you can see how family and older siblings had a hold, while Dave was precocious as well as brilliant. I met them in Melbourne.
this song shows what dave was capable of if he had bothered himself to put his mind into it like ray did. they could have been even better with regular contributions of that quality from dave. wonderful voice has dave, powerful but feeling at the same time
ray didn't even allow this on the "Lola" album so what was dave to do-it was relegated to a B side. always been a dave supporter so i agree with you in principal, but the kinks were ray's band and ray ruled it with an iron fist-
because lola was a 'concept' album it didnt really fit with the theme, so i assume that was the reasoning. i also was under the impression that this song was written for dave's solo album. the kinks only became ray's band because he put his life into it, and though i love dave, its hard to see past the fact that he had other priorities - namely drinking and womanising!
ray regularly put down dave, referring to him as dave 'death of a clown' davies, when ray allowed dave his one song of the evening (implying this song was ALL that dave had). dave may have felt that no matter what he tried to offer, ray wouldn't allow it (not unlike john and paul re george's songs-interesting to note how much george had for the triple LP, 'All Things..', his 1st solo), so maybe dave just threw his hands in the air and went on his 'merry' ways (drinking and womanising you wrote)
I love this song!! For many, many years I always thought a line was - ".... I see a man with an empty space ..." But the line is actually - ".. I see your mind just an empty space .." Which really changes the meaning of the song but actually makes a lot more sense. Thanks for the post.
This is so brilliant. They have so many others. Their greatest songs never
made it to the radio. Wonder Boy. She's Got Everything. Autumn Almanac.
Who Will Be The Next In Line. Plastic Man. Ape Man. Damn I love this music!

@maida1982a ----I think that was the "re-release" of 'Lola' from 'The Kinks Kronikles' album. Just a guess....

@carspiv in UK, B side of 'Lola' was 'Berkeley Mews", in US, it was 'Mindless ...'

I love Dave's voice. Very shrilly, very Kinks. The Kinks just would not be the Kinks without him.
