@bluegrassfan23 Alison going somewhere? I agree she is a great talent and no doubt, like Alison Krauss, she will stretch the boundaries and crossover and go where ever her considerable talent will lead her. But I think she will be the first Sarah Jarosz rather than the "next Alison Krauss". :)
She's certainly got the "goods" to go far... good move on your part, Sugarhill! You always seem to grab some of the best. From another couple of musicians that love this type of song, all we can say is... IMPRESSIVE!! Thanks!
I heard this version before the Tom Waits version, and before I'd heard it I always thought this one was nice and catchy, then I heard the Tom Waits version and it's all desperate and lamenting. Bearing that in mind, this version becomes really, really creepy. It's pretty cool.
Guys it's definitely a mandolin in this song. She also plays an octave mandolin a lot of the time, which is the instrument that people usually have trouble identifying. She also plays guitar and banjo, of course.
what exactly is this genre of music? because im not a huge fan of country (i dont really like the way country artists sing) but...this is really interesting, i love the fact that she uses alot of different instruments in her music, it sounds really cool, and i love her voice so...i might be considered to think other wise but...im just curious to know...
@GothicGirl967 Well, generally her albums are placed in Bluegrass or Americana. "Country music" is way more than the stuff most people think. IMO if you like real voices and abilities, "Country" is the best genre to find it but it does require a little research into sub genres, On my channel I have a playlist of bluegrass-like stuff I like and you can also find some good articles on both Bluegrass and Americana on Wikipedia, I hope you will find some new music to like. :)
@reddragonready My husband and I play this type of music and we just call it Americana.. because it isn't really bluegrass, it's a mixture of jazz, pop, folk and some bluegrass done up with a little bit of individuality... it's just the way we play and have been for years now. But to tell you exactly what genre you would put it in, I wouldn't have any idea! If you find out, please let us know! LOL!!
@KatieG53 I haven't been comfortable with any of the labels for her music. Even the Americana "big tent" seems a little too restrictive as she's getting elements of classical and world music in her mix. I read a review of a recent performance that called her music Post Modern Folk. I kind of like that one. Of course like they say, talking about music is like dancing about architecture. Whatever label you put on it, it's good.
@GothicGirl967 I wasn't a fan of "country" music as we hear it in the UK. But one night I came in late, flicked on the TV whilst cooking & there was a Gillian Welch concert on. I'd never heard of her - but there were a few songs that sounded amazing (check out "Revalator"). Took me about 8 weeks to get the courage up to walk into the Country section at the record store and buy something (I was mainly into Rock and Goth) but it opened my eyes to a new world of music.
Would a mandolin master post the chords/ chord diagrams she uses on the song? You would be my hero. Love the song but I cant seem to play the right chords myself.
Speaking as a musician (guitar , Bass guitar and pedal steel guitar) of more years than I will admit I am hypnotised by the sheer excellence of these musicians . They are top notch, Fretless standup bass, mandolin, and fiddle was amazing. BRAVO!
@msspi764 I don't think so. I believe those have a way longer neck. Then again, can't say for sure. Googling pics of mandolins and 8 strings tenor guitars though, I am sticking to mandolin for now. Also it sure sounds like a mandolin rather than an 8 string guitar to me.:)
@msspi764 Again, your obvious enthusiasm for that 8 string tenor guitar seems to steer you wrong. ;) I do believe behind her are a banjo, a regular guitar and an octave mandolin.
Sarah is clearly talented and makes the song her own...but she's not a dynamic stage presence. People are clearly enjoying her performance, so what else matters?
Been listening to Waits' Mule Variations a lot so I searched for this song. I think she does a great job with it. I also like the instrumentation, very interesting

@dmastax1x Dude, as a Tom Waits fan you might not like this cover but to say that the girl who writes the kind of songs this girl writes has "no spirit" is just you showing off a profound ignorance.
@reddragonready I Agree they took it in a very different direction than Tom Waits did, but then again they're not trying to be Tom Waits. It's ridiculous to say they don't have spirit

@reddragonready I agree, shouldn't of said Tom Waits would be ashamed, BUT I do agree completely with what he said. Essentially what makes the song, the hardship behind it and the motive of the song is removed in this cover, maybe not intentionally and yes she has a brilliant voice and they are talented, but this isn't the right song to express there talent. just doesn't sound right, thats all. other songs possibly would be great, just doesnt grab the emotion like music should.
@ShotgunSinner666 Obviously it is not sung with the same emotion Waits sings it. Maybe that's because these are smart musicians who realize they do not have the life experience Waits has? This is why it is also called doing a cover rather than doing an imitation. ;)
@ShotgunSinner666 And yes, they also did covers of songs the emotions of which are likely more in line with their ages and experiences. Check out the Dylan cover Ring Them Bells on her album "Follow Me Down" or her Beatles cover "Baby, you can drive my car" here on youtube.
And then check out her own songs and you'd realize these guys don't lack soul nor spirit. :)

Wow! She is amazing, and Alex Hargreaves and Nathaniel Smith are awesome on the fiddle and cello! I'll do my best to catch her next performance in Austin. Too bad I didn't know about her when she was here in May.
@wolfeman0 Well, it is simply put the most offensively bad things to happen to Tom Waits since that entire Scarlett Johansson catastrophe. It very likely tops at least one of Scarlett's attempts in awfulness.
@EdOByrne See, that's the difference between an actress and a musician. The former needs a producer to try "reallly hard" and will end up failing anyway, the latter only needs her instrument ( anyone of the several) and will succeed. And succeeding she is Ed. You may not enjoy this but until Waits himself says anything, we don't know how he feels about this cover. What we do know is that several highly respected musicians and a Grammy winning producer have a different opinion than you have. :)
@reddragonready You can keep 'em all man, Waits can love it too. If you can't at least match Waits intensity then I say stay away from a Waits song. In my opinion, she just isn't right for this song. The original sends chills down the spine, this, no offense, feels like an ad jingle. Blind Boys of Alabama is a group that could get away with covering Waits. Point, her cover of The Tourist is better than the original. Jarosz has talent, it has better uses.
@EdOByrne Don't know who you are referring to when you say "keep them all"? I am a Tom Waits fan from many years back and I like this cover.
Then again, I don't like The tourist but that's because I don't like Radiohead. They are a poor imitation of Faithless and Massive Attack imo. Guess we will have to agree to disagree deeply on music eh? ;D
@reddragonready What I mean to say is producers and musicians alike won't change my opinions, regardless of their credentials. I would say Radiohead has a fundamentally rock based foundation that neither Massive Attack nor Faithless can ascribe. The one band Radiohead I think can readily be criticized of plagiarizing is Aphex Twin, and their style differs soundly enough to call it distinctly original.
@EdOByrne Admittedly I base that opinion re Radiohead on the 2007 album and a general deep dislike of many of the British "rock bands" from the last 20 years. Then again, seems Sarah Jarosz has a very different view on Radiohead, Citing them often as a favorite. :)
Just goes to show you how personal music taste is doesn't it? :)
Ya know this young lady is just so great its astounding, she is my very favorite musical performer, and her sidemen are awsome as well.Just cant get enough of her talent.
@TheGrugruxKing I'm sorry but I can't remember the exact play list but unless it was the instrumental I would advise to simply Google one of the lines in combination with the word Lyrics. I usually manage to find song titles and lyrics that way. :)
@TheGrugruxKing I don't know the name, but here's the full episode on the PBS site so you can watch it again if you want to: video.pbs.org/video/1633720535
@TheGrugruxKing ok so im a little late on this but if you go to Austin City Limits you can find Sarah and steve martin as well..more than worth lookin into ;) blow your socks off it will ;)
please listen to this while reading along with the lyrics. if this ain't the blues, i don't know what the blues be. read along and listen. be enlightened. be real.
The awesome thing about music is............you can always find what you like, and you're not required to like it all.
This is not my kind of music, but if it was, I would say she is doing a good job. People there are happy and responding, and that is what it is supposed to be. Joy. Not your cup of tea? Fine........find something you do enjoy, which is what I am going to do right now.
I love the pentatonic scale he is playing on the fiddle!!! :) Don't think I've ever heard those particular passing tones scratched out on a throaty violin lol - very well done
@shotgunspinach And if all you are looking for is a good voice, stick to Doyle. This is more for people who also appreciate interpretative , song writing and instrumental skills.
@shotgunspinach I just saw her live yesterday. She has NOTHING on Lady Gaga or anyone on the radio today. She started her career at age, what, nine? She's got guts.
@shotgunspinach ....you dipshit, this is NOT a song that showcases vocals. Watch the rest of the Austin City Limits performance and you'll get a better taste of her vocal range. This is NOT to say she is the best vocalist out there by any means, but her vocals are far better than "mediocre at best" as you described them. Not to mention that at the age of 20, she has a musical maturity that far surpasses not only her peers, but many past musicians at the same stage in their careers
@onemuziclvr I wish you would have left of the "dipshit" ( though it IS an insult I like, I don't think the one short opinion warrants it as shotgunspinach wasn't rude about his opinion).
@reddragonready you're right....I let my immediate reaction get the best of me....@shotgunspinach, I did not intend to belittle you, everyone has a right to their opinion and I respect that, regardless of whether or not I agree with it. And thank you reddragonready for pointing out that, if anyone, I was the one being a dipshit. We all need to be reminded now and then, right?
@onemuziclvr LOL I didn't mean to imply that you were being one. As a general rule though, no doubt you are correct...we all are at times and we all should occasionally be reminded of that fact. But not too often please! ;D
@reddragonready LOL...I only wish to be reminded when I am, in fact, being a dipshit. Which hopefully is not too often :P hahaha. And don't worry, I didn't think you were implying that I was one, I realized that all on my own :D lol
However in all fairness to the Mysterious Brad...that "dislike" I suspect, came from some childish fool I argued with. I tend to piss folks off in discussions and I know I pissed off a lot of Whitney Houston fans for stating she was lip syncing in a certain video.
During the working day I have to listen to the latest top 40 advertising jingles piped through the PA. At home, thanks to YT, I get to listen to beautiful, heartfelt music such as this. Thank goodness for the internet! What a fabulous clip. Thanks for uploading it.
Thanks for sharing this with us Brad, what a wonderful clip. It took me back to when I was in school in Austin and I used to go and sit for hours to get tickets to ACL, saw some wonderful entertainers. Maradee and I got to see Nancy Griffith, what a show. I saw her three times that year, what an entertainer.....
Oh, if only we focused on positive things like music instead of politics, what a beautiful world it would be.
I saw her one night on austin city limits, right after a long night rehearsing w/ the band, and fell in love with her in about 3 minutes. I cannot believe how 'pure' her sound, voice is. I absolutely need to tell her how awesome she is, but im sure she has ppl telling her all the time. I freekin love this girl. She and her two bandmates are good too, but i just cant believe how her music makes me feel as soon as i hear her voice.
What brand of mandolin is she playing! I want one even though i havn't note in me head! :D

EdOByrne 4 months ago
@EdOByrne See, that's the difference between an actress and a musician. The former needs a producer to try "reallly hard" and will end up failing anyway, the latter only needs her instrument ( anyone of the several) and will succeed. And succeeding she is Ed. You may not enjoy this but until Waits himself says anything, we don't know how he feels about this cover. What we do know is that several highly respected musicians and a Grammy winning producer have a different opinion than you have. :)

@reddragonready Pardon..engineer and producer
reddragonready 4 months ago
@reddragonready You can keep 'em all man, Waits can love it too. If you can't at least match Waits intensity then I say stay away from a Waits song. In my opinion, she just isn't right for this song. The original sends chills down the spine, this, no offense, feels like an ad jingle. Blind Boys of Alabama is a group that could get away with covering Waits. Point, her cover of The Tourist is better than the original. Jarosz has talent, it has better uses.
EdOByrne 4 months ago
@EdOByrne Don't know who you are referring to when you say "keep them all"? I am a Tom Waits fan from many years back and I like this cover.
Then again, I don't like The tourist but that's because I don't like Radiohead. They are a poor imitation of Faithless and Massive Attack imo. Guess we will have to agree to disagree deeply on music eh? ;D
reddragonready 4 months ago
@reddragonready What I mean to say is producers and musicians alike won't change my opinions, regardless of their credentials. I would say Radiohead has a fundamentally rock based foundation that neither Massive Attack nor Faithless can ascribe. The one band Radiohead I think can readily be criticized of plagiarizing is Aphex Twin, and their style differs soundly enough to call it distinctly original.
EdOByrne 4 months ago
@EdOByrne Admittedly I base that opinion re Radiohead on the 2007 album and a general deep dislike of many of the British "rock bands" from the last 20 years. Then again, seems Sarah Jarosz has a very different view on Radiohead, Citing them often as a favorite. :)
Just goes to show you how personal music taste is doesn't it? :)
reddragonready 4 months ago
@reddragonready It does, and it is difficult to argue with hers in particular
EdOByrne 4 months ago
@EdOByrne LOL Yes, I saw on your channel why you would say that. ;)

I watched this on TV...I caught the last two songs, this one being the last. Does anyone know the song she played right before this one?
TheGrugruxKing 9 months ago
@TheGrugruxKing I'm sorry but I can't remember the exact play list but unless it was the instrumental I would advise to simply Google one of the lines in combination with the word Lyrics. I usually manage to find song titles and lyrics that way. :)

The awesome thing about music is............you can always find what you like, and you're not required to like it all.
This is not my kind of music, but if it was, I would say she is doing a good job. People there are happy and responding, and that is what it is supposed to be. Joy. Not your cup of tea? Fine........find something you do enjoy, which is what I am going to do right now.

she has a mediocre voice at best
shotgunspinach 10 months ago
@shotgunspinach And if all you are looking for is a good voice, stick to Doyle. This is more for people who also appreciate interpretative , song writing and instrumental skills.
reddragonready 10 months ago 2
@shotgunspinach I just saw her live yesterday. She has NOTHING on Lady Gaga or anyone on the radio today. She started her career at age, what, nine? She's got guts.
Ponypopo2 10 months ago
@shotgunspinach ....you dipshit, this is NOT a song that showcases vocals. Watch the rest of the Austin City Limits performance and you'll get a better taste of her vocal range. This is NOT to say she is the best vocalist out there by any means, but her vocals are far better than "mediocre at best" as you described them. Not to mention that at the age of 20, she has a musical maturity that far surpasses not only her peers, but many past musicians at the same stage in their careers
onemuziclvr 9 months ago 2
@onemuziclvr I wish you would have left of the "dipshit" ( though it IS an insult I like, I don't think the one short opinion warrants it as shotgunspinach wasn't rude about his opinion).
Other than that..well put! :)
reddragonready 9 months ago
@reddragonready you're right....I let my immediate reaction get the best of me....@shotgunspinach, I did not intend to belittle you, everyone has a right to their opinion and I respect that, regardless of whether or not I agree with it. And thank you reddragonready for pointing out that, if anyone, I was the one being a dipshit. We all need to be reminded now and then, right?
onemuziclvr 9 months ago
@onemuziclvr LOL I didn't mean to imply that you were being one. As a general rule though, no doubt you are correct...we all are at times and we all should occasionally be reminded of that fact. But not too often please! ;D
reddragonready 9 months ago
@reddragonready LOL...I only wish to be reminded when I am, in fact, being a dipshit. Which hopefully is not too often :P hahaha. And don't worry, I didn't think you were implying that I was one, I realized that all on my own :D lol

I bet Brad is the one guy that Disliked the video. Boo you Brad, boo you.
Lacey1512 11 months ago
@Lacey1512 LOL That's funny!
