To add on to what you said, as far as the ratio goes we must remember only peaks that go beyond the threshold will be compressed. So with a ratio of 2:1, for every 2 decibels that go over the threshold the compressor will reduce to 1 decibel. So if your threshold is -18 at a 2:1 ratio and a peak comes in at -16 which is 2 decibels above the threshold, it would be reduced to a peak of -17. Another thing I'd add on is that the gain fader is good to makeup for the volume lost during compression.
HOW do you Record your screen in Protools "Cam Studio"? Ive been having problems with this...I use Cam studio..I can record anything else through my PCI card, but dont cant get audio when I try to record tutorials.
Great way to explain compressing: set your threshold: [--------threshold----------]. your ratio is a basically a fraction of the threshold so a 2.1 would cut the threshold in half: Ratio 2.1 [---------hold---------]. Now the make up gain compensates for what you lost after setting the ration: Make up gain 4db [--hold------------]. A great reason why you would want to compress is for when your recording a singer and their volumes not consistent. Do those 3 steps and their volume would be steady
@joejayno there is lots of things you can try. first close all other applications you may be running. you can try using the parallel compression technique to reduce the number of effects you're using. use aux input tracks to add reverb. you can also adjust the buffer size and cpu usage via: "playback engine" under the Setup menu. if the error message still occurs you should consider increasing the ram of your system before buying a new one.
Did you end up finding that website with the list of ratio charts?
