@jamison94816 Y'know, I'm sure a scientific study would find exactly those results. Not to mention in correlation with visuals of white people scoring higher than black, etc. It'd be very interesting to see a big study to plot what factors have what impact. Probably already exists such studies but I'm too lazy to search ^^
i think lang lang can go either one of two ways - either a huge musical explosion over the keys or a very concentrated powerful stream of musicalness... his explosionness isn't for everyone but my dear god this was amazing... i want to learn this piece!! :D!
...in search of a cure for the terrible affliction of having a bad case of the hots for Justin, I wandered over to the LL part of the Tube, but it looks like Lang Lang has it worse than me, needs an injection up his ass, right into the spinal cord, of something like the curare, in order to suppress those horrible facial contortions...not that the piano playing could not use a little help...
I have yet to understand why most people seem to speak of Lang Lang's performance or playing as if comparing it to some other entity (a Pollini here, a Rubinstein there)... He is Lang Lang; Rubinstein is Rubinstein; and so forth... it is so pointless to continue comparing the living to the dead; and viceversa. One day a robot shall play this; and it will show programmed emotions on its mechanical face. Shall we then compare that robot to Lang Lang and say it is not expressing enough?
@thaesino ...you are, as might well be expected, missing the point entirely...nobody is talking about LL expressing or not expressing and any such nonsense...we only want something simple and basic, something that music schools are supposed to teach you...just play the freaking notes in front of you...LL does not do that...he messes things up in all sorts of ways...but he misses the basics...because he is spoiled and he does not care...and people like you encourage him not to care..
@fredericfranc I encourage him to be Lang Lang. This isn't about him caring or not caring. The way you began your reply ("as might well be expected") makes it clear that you took no time to understand the meaning behind my words and simply glanced at them with your own false automatic presumptions. That is fine. There is no room for argument when it has all been taken up by ego.
@thaesino ....there is no ego involved, at least not mine. Lang Lang knows very well, because he is not an idiot, that he does a bad job as a pianist, because he admits to this freely in published interviews. If you want to "encourage him to be Lang Lang" you, first, need to know something about him, and you don't. He needs help with trying to become an acceptable pianist, and this you are NOT doing this, because you don't understand his problems, you are only making his life harder...
@fredericfranc i think what you're refering to as 'messing up' is what the musical world knows as rubato, and is used extensively in romantic period period pieces, such as the Opus 10 no.3 by Chopin, which happens to be this piece. And FYI he does not violate or add to anything on the score. My urtext edition backs me up on this.
@franticfingerfrenzy ...in the major U.S. city in which I live there are two grad level music schools and I teach in in both of them so I have heard about rubato too...sorry about this, but LL DOES mess up in this piece, as in much of anything he does...he has his own way of doing it...by not having any musical taste left, having been spoiled by his ignorant audiences, and simply NOT CARING about music because he is going to make his money anyway...
@fredericfranc now this i don't understand. How can a TEACHER of music even say that somebody else has no musical taste? Music, like all art, is about PERSONAL opinion and taste. An audience is NEVER ignorant. If anything, LL's audience is more enthusiastic than any other, even if at times they allow their genuine pride to make them act like fools, but I'm not sure any usual audience understands the music any more so than LL's usual fans. Nevertheless, LL is a MUSICIAN and prides himself in it.
@iWpanz ...acceptable taste in classical music is very hard to acquire, it takes very hard, and deliberate work, and, above all, a long time, and MUCH, very MUCH listening, and a long time above all. Conductors of classical music, even after 20 years of international-class conducting have only the dimmest idea of what they are doing. Does not apply to everybody, but is still common, I know it first hand. Given all this, the unsatisfactory situation with Lang Lang is not unusual at all..
@fredericfranc so is he doing too much or too little? your earlier comment : "...we only want something simple and basic, something that music schools are supposed to teach you...just play the freaking notes in front of you..."
@franticfingerfrenzy ...he is doing both too much and too little...the point is to respect the composer's intentions, but LL is not interested in this...this requires severe discipline...but LL is interested in "indulging himself" in a peculiar way, and "pandering" to the musically unsophisticated audience, by giving his performances a "popular" aspect...his fans call it "let LL be "himself" " but the concept does not work, one must concentrate on the music, that is thepoint
@franticfingerfrenzy ...if you want to have a sense of the right attitude toward the composer, listen to the interview given by the american pianist Kapell, which you can hear here on the YT...where he discusses what Chopin's piano music is all about, and the attitude to have about it...my point is not that I want LL to imitate Kapell's style, or anybody else's...but to concentrate on the composer and the music...he is interested in neither...only in making the money...
@fredericfranc with all due respect, sir, you are a pompous ass! If anyone were even remotely interested in trying to live up to your definition of what is an "acceptable taste in classical music," there would be no one to play for. Those who can will always play, but those who can't, teach!
@dmeachy ...because I teach I run into weirdly immense numbers of those "acceptable taste in classical music" type of people...it is is, after all, FROM THEM, that I get my ideas about all this...and, fuck, this is TEXAS...we not only fuck cows down here, but horses too...
@fredericfranc Right i get what you're hitting at. He does not conform to the conventional style of playing which is idiosyncratic of the musical context. In fact sometimes it sounds like as if its his own composition and he merely borrowed the main theme. I agree with you on that. But somehow i find it refreshingly original. Like something to relax to with a glass of champagne, not scrutinize over with a music lecturer. I totally respect your viewpoint by the way.
@franticfingerfrenzy ...if we do cows and horses too kinda hard to believe you "respect my viewpoint"...too much respecting is going on around here, courtesy of LL...anyway, hard to believe LL could be "refreshingly original"...does he believe that?...maybe...anyway...the "cure" for this notion of his originality is listening to what OTHERS do with the piece...then maybe you would end up using different language to describe what LL really does with the piece...
@franticfingerfrenzy ...I got more into this " does not conform to the conventional style of playing which is idioyncratic of the musical context" and "not scrutinize over with a music lecturer"...what one wants to say, in direct american vernacular, is that Lang Lang sends this Op 10, No 3, directly, resolutely, down the toilet...you can develop the sense of just how limited a musician he is, how marginal his powers are by actually listening to a lot of HIM, worked for me.
as one of my friends put it: once an artist reaches the peak that we calla virtuoso, there are no longer any comparisons to be made. Just the preferences that are taken by we the listeners. I want people to stop with the comparisons and just listen to the music!
He plays this piece much better than many others (pieces!) and his sound is beautiful, as his thechnique. OK, it's completely out of style and sometimes even nervous, with strange phrasing but he is an artist, no doubt, and I respect him for that. I don't know yet if he plays like that because he wants to show necessarely something "new" or he really feels the music like that. In the first case too cheap, in the second pity to have such amazing technique not at the service of the highest art.
In reference to some of the comments, Lang has been winning awards since he was 5 years old... so to say you'll be better one day is rediculous. He's surpassed your talent already. As for the way he looks or performs- How Superficial. God has blessed this man with one of the greatest gifts- talent. And wouldn't it be more robotic if his performance was emotionless and lacked this raw flare and style sure to be imitated by his biggest fans. His Performance shows his Passion for his LOVE. <3 IT
@misiaczek991992 Be careful: Lang Lang is only as famous as he is because he's completely sold out. Surely a aiming to be a better pianist, and a better musician, than Lang Lang would be a more suitable goal? Neither of which is very difficult, by the way - he's a complete clown.
If you want to be famous, become a pop star. If you want to be taken seriously as a musician, then get studying.
Not really...Lang Lang actually was famous even before he was sold out, since he one of the piano competitions in Ettlingen, his fame started from there
also, u should really read one of his books, gives a great insight into his life with his typical asian father
Virtuoso extravaganza. I posted a video os 17 pianists trying to play the famous octave ending of Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody 2. A new Russian pianist who plays Liszt on YouTube said this about the video:
"I had 5 minutes of laughing at the greatest virtuosi. Please crucify me. Seriously, many of the virtuosi released ,essy recordings, and there is no shame to criticize their manner." -- Russian college student - piano wizard
@swimjet1125 ur disgraceful, looking down on ur own race. even if ur trrolling its still pretty gay that u say stuff about ur own race in a negative way
HE plays really awesome but he doesn't have to make all those faces. He seems he's taking a shi.... BUT he plays the piano really well. The guy behind hima is like "WTF whit this guy!, is he ok..."
Oh and just to make people aware of what a little creep he is - he forced Sony to drop Yundi Li from their roster of recording artists before he would sign with them. Unethical little minimally talented egotist.
Try listen to Yundi Li's Chopin. He was the young 18 yr old Chinese who, in 2000, won the father of all piano competitions in Warsaw. He was the first participant to be awarded First Prize in 15 years, since Poland didn't think anybody deserved the First Prize in playing Chopin since 1985 other than him. Li's Liszt's arrangement of Paganini's La Campanella on DG was one of the most enjoyable piano playings I've ever listened to. For pyrotechnics, such as Prokofiev's 3rd, well, probably Lang...
I'm a huge Lang Lang fan, and even so, sometimes I can understand where the haters are coming from. But I think even the haters have to admit that he plays this beautifully; there's just no getting around it.
Most of this etude sounded awkward, but it was listenable. I had to mute after 2:38 and 2:41, that was just... too much. I can't believe someone of his level of technical skill would do that to Chopin.
@Zander101084 So, I didn't really care for the ultra slow tempo Lang Lang used for the beginning and ending sections, but I understand that his rubato is usually quite extreme, and I could deal with that.
This piece is called Tristesse, it means sadness. The beginning and end portions just seemed melodramatic, and that sounded awkward to me, but I can see how people can find it enjoyable to listen to. However, the tempo change at 2:38 and 2:41 into the ridiculously rapid descents was crazy.
@Zander101084 It went from a passage that was normally full of emotion to a passage that was entirely mechnical, from Lang Lang's slow and steady emotional build up to end in nothing. It was like the music crumbles at that point into nothing, and then resumes as if nothing happened. Like reading a very emotional story with two pages ripped out.
There's no reason to play those two passages at that tempo, and I just couldn't listen at that point. It just sounded ridiculous.
Why do people criticize his face, his emotion? To be honest, I wish I could look like that when I play the piano. Anyone who has ever touched a piano knows that emotion is important, if not a necessity to express the composers piece. More important than posture or hand arrangement.
The man is making millions before packed houses and still many continue with negative criticism ....I don’t get it. I don’t think I’ll ever get it. I don’t even think those criticizing could ever get it.
People. STFU. Lang is truly a genuine genius in what he does. He does it his own way, he really has no need to do a copycat of any other pianist to conduct his interpretation.
That was incredible touching.

@franticfingerfrenzy ...if you want to have a sense of the right attitude toward the composer, listen to the interview given by the american pianist Kapell, which you can hear here on the YT...where he discusses what Chopin's piano music is all about, and the attitude to have about it...my point is not that I want LL to imitate Kapell's style, or anybody else's...but to concentrate on the composer and the music...he is interested in neither...only in making the money...
fredericfranc 3 months ago
@fredericfranc with all due respect, sir, you are a pompous ass! If anyone were even remotely interested in trying to live up to your definition of what is an "acceptable taste in classical music," there would be no one to play for. Those who can will always play, but those who can't, teach!
dmeachy 3 months ago
@dmeachy ...because I teach I run into weirdly immense numbers of those "acceptable taste in classical music" type of people...it is is, after all, FROM THEM, that I get my ideas about all this...and, fuck, this is TEXAS...we not only fuck cows down here, but horses too...
fredericfranc 3 months ago
@fredericfranc Right i get what you're hitting at. He does not conform to the conventional style of playing which is idiosyncratic of the musical context. In fact sometimes it sounds like as if its his own composition and he merely borrowed the main theme. I agree with you on that. But somehow i find it refreshingly original. Like something to relax to with a glass of champagne, not scrutinize over with a music lecturer. I totally respect your viewpoint by the way.
franticfingerfrenzy 3 months ago
@franticfingerfrenzy ...if we do cows and horses too kinda hard to believe you "respect my viewpoint"...too much respecting is going on around here, courtesy of LL...anyway, hard to believe LL could be "refreshingly original"...does he believe that?...maybe...anyway...the "cure" for this notion of his originality is listening to what OTHERS do with the piece...then maybe you would end up using different language to describe what LL really does with the piece...
fredericfranc 3 months ago

Wienermitan 4 months ago
In reference to some of the comments, Lang has been winning awards since he was 5 years old... so to say you'll be better one day is rediculous. He's surpassed your talent already. As for the way he looks or performs- How Superficial. God has blessed this man with one of the greatest gifts- talent. And wouldn't it be more robotic if his performance was emotionless and lacked this raw flare and style sure to be imitated by his biggest fans. His Performance shows his Passion for his LOVE. <3 IT

misiaczek991992 4 months ago

For pyrotechnics, such as Prokofiev's 3rd, well, probably Lang...
chankwaichoi1 6 months ago
I'm a huge Lang Lang fan, and even so, sometimes I can understand where the haters are coming from. But I think even the haters have to admit that he plays this beautifully; there's just no getting around it.
hmin310 6 months ago
Most of this etude sounded awkward, but it was listenable. I had to mute after 2:38 and 2:41, that was just... too much. I can't believe someone of his level of technical skill would do that to Chopin.
SilentViolins 6 months ago
@SilentViolins This is not awkward, but only genius understand Chopin.
Classicalife 6 months ago
@SilentViolins what do you mean?
Zander101084 6 months ago
@Zander101084 So, I didn't really care for the ultra slow tempo Lang Lang used for the beginning and ending sections, but I understand that his rubato is usually quite extreme, and I could deal with that.
This piece is called Tristesse, it means sadness. The beginning and end portions just seemed melodramatic, and that sounded awkward to me, but I can see how people can find it enjoyable to listen to. However, the tempo change at 2:38 and 2:41 into the ridiculously rapid descents was crazy.
SilentViolins 6 months ago
@Zander101084 It went from a passage that was normally full of emotion to a passage that was entirely mechnical, from Lang Lang's slow and steady emotional build up to end in nothing. It was like the music crumbles at that point into nothing, and then resumes as if nothing happened. Like reading a very emotional story with two pages ripped out.
There's no reason to play those two passages at that tempo, and I just couldn't listen at that point. It just sounded ridiculous.
SilentViolins 6 months ago
Why do people criticize his face, his emotion? To be honest, I wish I could look like that when I play the piano. Anyone who has ever touched a piano knows that emotion is important, if not a necessity to express the composers piece. More important than posture or hand arrangement.

The man is making millions before packed houses and still many continue with negative criticism ....I don’t get it. I don’t think I’ll ever get it. I don’t even think those criticizing could ever get it.
skimask777 6 months ago
People. STFU. Lang is truly a genuine genius in what he does. He does it his own way, he really has no need to do a copycat of any other pianist to conduct his interpretation.
