Lift Every Voice and sing was first performed as a poem in celebration of Abraham Lincoln's birthday. The poem was later set to music by Mr. Johnson's brother, John in 1905. Singing the song became a way for African Americans to demonstrate their patriotism, and hope for the future. In 1919 the NAACP adopted the song as "The Negro National Anthem".
Stop light. Blood plasma transfusion. Refrigerator. Grandfather clock & pendulum. Haircare products. Blueprints to White House. Nelson Mandela &' Ending Apartheid in South Africa. Thee Thriving Economy of Thee South up until 1865. Contemporary &&' Classical Jazz and Blues. Christopher Columbus Saw Thee Great Pyramids and Saw Our Empires and Booming Civilization. We Were Kings and Queens. We Ran Thee African Continent Prior to European Invasion.
i am sick and tired of people saying black people have never founded and ran a nation that contributed to the world, somebody help me with some ammo. blacks are the smartest people on earth.
I understand when it was wrote. I just think it creates confusion when it's called a National Anthem. I mean we as a people only have one National Anthem. Just imagine if this great country had a Chinese, Irish, Polish, French English, Japanese, Spanish, Romanian, and on on on on National Anthem.. that would be a little confusing at a BaseBall Game.
DAM KID THAT DUDE RACIST ....Rigorserpent ...UR AN ASS...DONT WRRY IM NOT BLACK IM HISPANIC BUT I STILL SHOW LOVE FOR MY BLACK PPL..AFTER ALL I AM HALF
Since it's an illegitimate national anthem (unless someone can prove to me that a country named Black does, in fact, exist), it's a racial anthem, designed to foster division, and alienation, among blacks in America, by making them believe that they're not Americans, but members of another nationality, one based on race. If you still don't see anything wrong with a Black National Anthem, then imagine if it was called the White National Anthem.
how can you say it was designed to foster division and alienation? it was created at a time when there already was division. listen to the words 'let us march on til' victory is won' - yeah that really sounds divisive, huh? songs like this were written to inspire and encourage. And the segregation was not originated by Blacks - if you say it was or think it was then I'm truly wasting my time
First, the title/phrase "Black National Anthem" is simply a "nick name" or term of endearment for the song, not the actual title or meaning of the song. It is not "literally" a black national anthem. On the other side of that, if you think "nation" only means "country", crack open your dictionary. Lastly, please point out any lyrics in the song that are divisive, alienating, racist or even remotely biased towards ANY group (or "nation") of people anywhere in the song. Lyrics are in the info --->
So what if we made a WHITE NATIONAL ANTHEM? You would be marching in the street crying racism.
1 nation, 1 national anthem, god forbid you show your country some respect, and respect our national anthem that was written in my hometown of Baltimore. Go salute the flag.
LOL, I'm sure I've personally saluted the flag and sung the American national anthem at least a thousand times, and continue to do so. That isn't the issue. Plus, you're missing the point of the lyrics of the song. For example, when "The Star Spangled Banner" was written, and they mentioned "the land of the free and the home of the brave", who were they talking about? Was it talking about everyone in America? Certainly not. They were by default, singing about the white people in America....
(cont) as black people were in no way "free"... and when trying to be "brave" to gain that freedom that the star spangle banner mentioned, they were killed in horrific ways. So, I suppose the lyrics of "Lift Every Voice and Sing" gave black people a little more hope, as it called for freedom and justice amongst ALL people. Maybe you can understand the purpose and intent of why this song was adopted as an "anthem". If there was a "white national anthem", what would its intent and purpose be?
I promise you, if you walk down my street and ask every black person you see, if they know this song......maybe 1 out of 10 would know it. This is something thats being drudged up from a while ago for no apperent reason but to have your own national anthem.
And andrew scott key was talking about EVERYONE who was fighting in the war.
But apperently the white national anthem is our National Anthem since hes only talking about white people in there.........
LOL, if only 1 out of 10 black people on your street know "Lift Every Voice and Sing", I would be absolutely shocked. It's about 100 years old. So either these people on your street are between the ages of 5 - 15, or you don't actually know or talk to any black people for any length of time, lol. It's not being "drudged up"... it's been around forever, it hasn't gone anywhere. And no, it's not just "to have our own national anthem", you're looking way too deeply into the "nickname" of the song.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Look, you can call it a "Black Anthem" till your blue in the face, im fine with that. No problem what so ever.
Its when all of you title your videos the "Black National Anthem" that it gets me heated
Thats disrespecting my country, and my home town where the REAL national anthem was written.
BTW What do you think most black people are more likely to know more.....This song, or the latest "Lil Wayne" piece of garbage? Something thats supposed to mean something to them, or a shitty rapper
Good thing I'm in the "land of the free" where I can say whatever I want, and title my videos whatever I want. As a proud American, that's my right :) So get heated all you want... and have your own opinions. That's part of your rights as well. In conclusion, PLEASE take some time to look up the word "NATION", and hopefully you'll realize that it is not just "a country". If you can't understand that, then stay heated and feel disrespected... Take care!
I can feel where you are coming from... Somewhat... But in all actuality... This song merely represents our ancestors' many years of oppression and slavery... And our power to persevere and overcome... I wouldnt call it a NATIONAL Anthem... But a song for anyone who can Rejoice in the fact that they have come out of bad circumstances and who fought to get to a better place... Yes im Bi Racial and very proud to call myself an american...
You are taking the side name too seriously. I do not think it is in anyway shape or form, trying to insult the Country's National Anthem. The lyrics of this song speak to the African American people, a little more closely to the actual circumstances that they were in and it is a lovely song.
@Rigorserpent the real powers behind this corrupt nation are a very evil group..they lie to you and like a dummy, you believe it, for instance the truth about 9/11 is out now..its right here on youtube...why should we respect evil(the government aka the puppets)....babylon shall burn!!!!!!its in The Holy Bible
i usually cant stand people who sing and put it on youtube but ur voice is awesome i luv this viedo u gave me alot of confidence cuz i got 2 sing it 4 my graduation
Have to admit I am not that fond of our current NA it is really not that old 1920 or 30's or so. And a complete ripoff of "God Save the Queen". An anthem with some gusto is what I would like. EU anthem is (ode to joy) bombastic. The Soviet Anthem had some balls. Hell I would like the Battle Hymn of the Republic for the US. This is wishy washy. Kind of has a defeatest sound to it.
dancefan2007 AND anigga2remember BE QUIET. he is fantastic. dont be jealous he can sing alot better, than you ever can Keep doing your thang. You are awesome.
LOL... I try not to reply to comments like this too much, but that was funny! Especially because "nation" and "country" are two completely different things. Look it up!
I think you can sing, but sometimes you got messed up. You have to take it one step at a time. You don't have to try to hard, but I would agree that you should go professional. Ever think about auditioning for American Idol?
Very good! Don't be afraid to take it there though. I believe you have an ability to give us a little more than what you just demonstrated. I really liked it. Good Job!
i was commenting 2 somethin racist that someone else said about this man and i understand what this song is about and what it was made for this anthem was not made so blacks could have an anthm, it was made to express what slaves went thru. and i could care less what u have 2 say!!! and am a proud african american so u can think what u want but i have my opinion and u have urs.
I'm not racist or anything, hell i have a black girlfriend, but I feel like the black national anthem is kinda racist, am i wrong. I mean that's like dividing people becuz of the color of thier skin within a nation. How do you feel about white national anthems, are they not racist?
(I'm copy & pasting my reply to a similar comment 9 months ago) It's a historical song. The same way the US national anthem talks about America's struggle for freedom from British rule, this song talks about black people's struggle for freedom from slavery, and the hope that brought us through. So no, the song isn't so much "for black people only", it's about black people. Also, listen to the words again... it's calling for "every voice" to sing, calling for peace and harmony amongst ALL people.
Also, for other who think the same thing, can you please point out the "racist" lyrics in this song? The term "Black National Anthem" is only a colloquial title for the song... simply a term of endearment for a song that has meant a lot to black people. The actual title is "Lift Every Voice and Sing". I have posted the fill lyrics to this song in the info section of this video. Can anyone point out the "racist" part of the song?
very well written damonc79....it not racist at all....its used to express the freedom of blacks from the slavery that they were bound to by whites...a white national anthem would be racist because there is nothing to talk about unless you use the US national anthem as the white anthem but that wouldnt make sense
that is racist and im black n no black people care about shooting rambrts n shooting rockets this song is about african americans fighting for the freedom we deserve and talkin about what weve been through and i may only be 12 but i know thats racist n dont post anything like that again ny F.Y.I if you say not tryin to be racist 9 out of 10 times it still sounds and is racist you idiotic inconsiderate jerk
You sound great.

You obviously arent a proud american, you hold your race above your country.
So do what want, theres no getting through to you people, your always right, and everyone else with a differing opinion is wrong.
Go to wikipedia, and look up all the "national anthems" in one place. Tell me which one seems to not be there :)
So, "in conclusion", keep singing your slave song, and keep thinking that it means a whole lot more than it actually does. :)....."Take care!"

Very good! Don't be afraid to take it there though. I believe you have an ability to give us a little more than what you just demonstrated. I really liked it. Good Job!

Beautiful voice man...
I'm not racist or anything, hell i have a black girlfriend, but I feel like the black national anthem is kinda racist, am i wrong. I mean that's like dividing people becuz of the color of thier skin within a nation. How do you feel about white national anthems, are they not racist?
just wanna see wat everyone thinks.

Can anyone point out the "racist" part of the song?
damonc79 3 years ago
very well written damonc79....it not racist at all....its used to express the freedom of blacks from the slavery that they were bound to by whites...a white national anthem would be racist because there is nothing to talk about unless you use the US national anthem as the white anthem but that wouldnt make sense
fafinho11 3 years ago
that is racist and im black n no black people care about shooting rambrts n shooting rockets this song is about african americans fighting for the freedom we deserve and talkin about what weve been through and i may only be 12 but i know thats racist n dont post anything like that again ny F.Y.I if you say not tryin to be racist 9 out of 10 times it still sounds and is racist you idiotic inconsiderate jerk
