I think all of us is entirely missing the point. As far as my ego goes I am a good person but not without my own share of troubles. But none of that really matters because although many things can be said about this man he was no worse than anyone of us. And absolutely no worse than any living Buddha.
I love this talk. It really strips reality down to its bones and shows us what is really important. Just Now! Thats all. Because we have grown up thinking primarily about the past and the future we are totally out of touch with the present moment.
We should try to spend more time in the now and come to understand what that means so that we can grow in that direction. Why
Why? because everything eminates from it. the past and the future wouldn't be possible if not for the present. I believe that the here and now has its own space and that we leave that space behind whenever we forget it but if we can be in that space and live in it constantly, then we will understand something more fundamental about our lives and what it means to be a human being.
They say that reality is stranger than fiction. Well, what about the reality of the now?
The past and the future are both fictions. One takes memory to visit which for most people is very much falible and the other needs the imagination which is inherently fictional. The only truth there is, is whats happening in the present but when we really bring ourselves back to point zero (now the place where all dimensions spring from) we realise that it is actually a very strange place to be because we are not used to it.

I love this philosophy. When you think about the masses who are concerned with material pocessions, image, how to act but there's one thing very few of us learn and that is how to live in the here and now. This is why pocessions don't really have importance because we soon forget them and are too occupied with the present. When you receive a gift you receive it in the "present " hence the name.
hmm - i dwell on the past and future but I don't feel threatened by the "now". in fact I feel threatened by my memories of the past and my worries of the future. That is why I dwell on them, and find such trouble focusing on the "Now".
@Howie21191 its hard to do this when stoned in work serving customers, proves a good point that chogyam stated about how smoking weed is bad for the spirit... I guess a wrestless mind is not a still mind therefore achieving focus upon the now is likely to be more of a chore
@zapproowsdower hmm...the past and the future give you a sense of 'existence'...'my past'..'my future'..you are in love with these thoughts...they cleverly keep you OUT of the now, which is fearful indeed... for here...'you' dont exist at all!
@zapproowsdower that's simply untrue.. you're threatened by the past and future that you worry about NOW.. You can't think in the past nor can you think in the future, you are always in NOW, therefore any worry you have about the past or future is a worry you have NOW
Very powerful words indeed, made me change my way of thinking and experiencing "the now" and that was not possible due to my past belief system. Sometimes all it takes are few words to actualy realize what you have allready been realising subconsciously. Thx for upload and thank you Trungpa :)
Thanks for posting this segment. I love the use of these quotes in Zeitgeist, although, part 1 seems to me, like an athiest rant about christianity, its the way it worded. But, i loved the doco because its just one of those eye openers.
I'm all for the positive aspects of religion, such as no murder, honesty, live and let live etc, but I just don't like seeing it's corrupted side. The control of the people involved; brainwashing, and the often violent, even deadly extremists who commit the very wrongs they think they are punishing for.
@Howie21191 I dont think that it is correct to use any dogma at all to indoctrinate people, regardless of how harmless the teachings are (most religions arent harmless as a whole and harm is intrinsic). It is more meaningful to teach why things are the case than simply what is the case. Rather than preaching, it is better to ask the questions that lead to the truth. Morality and justice could be reconciled with rational thought, which also has the advantage of leading to the same conclusion(s).
He tells us that the past and future don't matter. What matters is what is now, right here. There is much to gain from "living in the now" and little to gain from shifting our thoughts to the past or future. Most people can't deal with what's happening in their lives, so they retreat to the past and future in fear.
Most people live their lives in a straight line, hence "waiting to be dead." The meaning of life is to live, it's so utterly obvious that people still forget it sometimes.
The current belief systems that most people have set up for themselves are very limiting and demeaning, also untruthful. Because of those belief systems, those people find it difficult to face the real truth, such as the power of living in the now, the whole "spiritual" idea.
I think Chögyam Trungpa is trying to build on the concept of 'Anatta" or the objective absence of the concept of the 'self'. Everything is experienced per our desires to experience, and nothing is 'real' in the sense that because no phenomena can last forever - it inherently is a phase rather than in a permanent, non-changing state.
Also the man is dead, he does not care to the least bit.

@MrAtomicforce I love your perspective, and completely agree :) Well said!
Somebody recently said "Need not dwell on the past, because it haunts your present and future."
I add, "Need not dwell on the future, because it is uncertain."
This moment is what's important. It is where things happen; where potential lies and opportunities evolve.

@zapproowsdower Ask yourself, Right NOW, in THIS exact moment, what is there to worry about?
I think you'll find that the answer is simply nothing.

@zapproowsdower: Exactly the same here.. I'm always trying to focus on the here and now.
But my problem is I keep worrying about the future and think of the past.
There are a few moments in my life i can ignore these worries and life in the NOW, that's when i'm truly happy..
Producing/mixing music, going out, when i'm sleeping etc.

did the zeitgeist makers take this from an original lecture/interview? if so, i would greatly appreciate info on how to find it

I'm not entirely sure, but I would assume they did, because there's a lot of that in Zeitgeist.
You can try typing a few key words which are said in this video into google and see what pops up.
Other than that, I'm sorry I can't be of more help.
