I was 10 when I saw them in Ragtime...now 23, it still remains one of the greatest joys of my life to have seen this show with these two, not to mention Marin Mazzie, Judy Kaye, Peter Freidman, Mark Jacoby, and Judy Kaye....it is probably one of the only productions I ever saw where I can remember every single moment of it so vividly and it made me want to become an actor in musical theatre. I plan to move to NYC this summer to begin my dream and it all began with Ragtime.
God please forgive those in the past who were blinded by satan's lies, and who treated African-Americans as though they were of less value than other races. I saw the original cast of this show when I was in high school. To this day, I still find this show to be spell binding. My favorite Broadway show. Hearing Brian Stoke's Mitchell sing, "Make Them Hear You" just brings a tear to my eye each time and takes my breathe away. I sent him an e-mail when I was in school, and was so excited when he wrote back to me. lol
I was so fortunate to see them live on broadway in August 1998 in the original run of "Ragtime". Broadway performers don't come much better than Audra McDonald and Brian Stokes Mitchell.
I just posted on another video...THIS Rosie performance got me off my ass and straight to New York to see it. I had never left Dallas, never flown on a plane, never stayed ina hotel, never seen a show. I saw this cast in New York, then saw the touring company in Dallas a couple years later. Ragtime holds a very special place in my heart.
@rellenoz I totally feel the same way, and bought the cd after seeing that orginal production. Why it did not run longer, I will never know. It is one of the most brilliantly produced, scored, cast, and directed shows ever.
Solo's Melody Holloway who is originally known as Kerri Forrester and I sung dis at Mississippi Valley State University last year. We tore da roof off da sucker.
I drove from Michigan to Toronto 7 times, 5 of them day trips, just to see this show with this original cast before it went to Broadway. The first few times it was still in working satges and some songs have changed. After the opening number the crowd cheered and clapped for so long, I've never seen a show that had this kind of response.
I had the wonderful opportunity of performing this song with him in chorus in college and he is an amazing performer, singer, and person! Brian Stokes Mitchell is just absolutely incredible!
have you ever had that feeling, where you just feel something go up and down your spine and a tingle all over your body? that is exactly how this song makes me feel every time i hear it.
I had a friend who saw McDonald and Mitchell sing this at a benefit concert before Obama got elected. To say it was electrifying would be an understatement
I had to pleasure of seeing this production at a very young age and it still affects me to this day. It has got to be the most powerful musical ever and this is my favorite duet ever.
Everytime this business lets me down and I think "Why am I doing this to myself?" I simply watch this performance and remember. True artistry, these two will always hold a place in my heart. SO INSPIRING!
The play and music was great. I was doing some work in a stairway at a theater in Los Angeles, Ca. Brian And Audra was rehearsing their parts at the top of the stairway and it was wonderful.
Two of the best..and to also have had Marin Mazzie and Judy Kaye in that cast...it was Broadway heaven....except the score got too bombastic and dull in the second half and killed the show. I saw the first NYperformance and to add to the thrill it was the opening of the renovated Hilton Theater. A joyous memory.
absolutely undoubtedly beautiful. beautiful is the word. always put me in tears. wanna watch this in person....... hope more ppl will get to appreciate this musical, would be such a waste to leave this piece in the bottom of the sea!
I'm almost yearning for an alto part in this it is so awesome!!!!
-Can't breathe it is so heartbreaking!!! I'm literally hyperventilating! Brian Stokes Mitchell...Gorgeous Gorgeous talented man! Audra Mcdonald...speechless
@Garnetlover15 This is from the Original Broadway cast of "Ragtime", as seen on the Rosie O'Donnell Show. Broadway saw a revival of it just this last 2009 season. Although this smaller production garnered better reviews than the original, it closed after only two months. There are many clips from both B'way productions, as well as many regional productions. Check them out!
So gorgeous. I love this song, but every time I've seen it performed it seemed so rehearsed. This feels so authentic and driven by emotions. How I wish I'd seen this cast!
I was lucky enough to see them on Broadway... a totally religious experience. Also met Mr. Mitchell after seeing him in 'Man of La Mancha", and he couldn't have been more lovely. Amazing talent on display here.
Holy SHAT. The talent is literally BEATING through the screen. He's ridiculously regal and gorgeous (besides talented) and she's just all power. I wish I saw this cast.
@stitchgrl777...I totally agree with you. I think that this is the only cast from this time of ragtime will be remembered. The talent is just peircing, and overwhelming. I also wish I was a part of this cast, and this song happens to be one of my favortie broadway musicals. The producers did a reallly damn good job in taking the time in picking out the characters with so much passion. This is really riviating.
Brian Stokes Mitchell, I am in love with your ability to sing. Wow! I caught you on
TBN singing at the Crystal Cathedral. You sang from your new CD "Ring the Bells". I loved it. I love your voice, the facial expressions, the joy from which you pull from on high. I love it, and I loved the movie the "Prince of Egypt" and never knew until this weekend you are singing the part of Jethro. I love your voice. It is powerful and strong. I love it, I love it. I am rushing out to find your Xmas cd.
This is absolutely what America is about, from my point of view: everyone getting an opportunity to provide for their families, and having faith that their children will have an opportunity to succeed and live out their dreams when they've grown. It's tragic that we still so frequently fall short of these ideals, and it's so incredibly important that we regain an understanding that we are our brothers' keepers.
I was lucky to have seen Ragtime twice in Toronto with the original cast(Audra, Brian, Marrin and many others) and all I can say is: I was BLESSED to have seen this. Yes, they gave me goosebumps like this video.. PERFECTION!

As a piano accompaniment from musical theater would this be classed as being at the more difficult end of the scale? from a piano player in musical theater's point of view?
I love they way both singers light up the stage and their acting is beautiful. I could listen to Brian all day. He sings This nearly was mine in South Pacific at Carnegy hall and it makes you just want to cry. He held that face through much standing ovation . He sang with the Tabernacle Choir on a Christmas show he immitations all the animals - I will truly want to watch him sing there again.l listen to he and Audra almost every day.
I love this video. Brian is a beautiful singer and I didn't realize until lately that Audra is on the Private Practice. It is a shame to hide that beautiful voice. I hope she does more singing on Broadway. They work well together. Anything Brian does is good. Joan
I remember this musical came out when I was in high school, and I loved the Tony performance. A friend loaned me her recording, and as soon as BSM sang "Sarah, come down to me!" in New Music, I was completely hooked on him. He's beautiful, and so is Audra.
I love to see this almost every night. Brian's voice is so dynamic and he sings with such feeling. I listened to him sing "this nearly was mine" at carnegie hall. What an absolutely wonderful performance. He is truly wonderful. Joan
It's at this point, I would normally crack a joke about how their son would ride on the Wheels of an Impossible Dream, in reference to Brian Stokes Mithcell's amazing turn of Don Quixote.
Yes, he is very very freaking amazing and talented. See his South Pacific clips on YouTube with Reba McEntire. "SOME ENCHANTED EVENING" (Reprise) in HD
Thank you so much for posting this! This song always moves me to tears and I've heard it hundreds of times, but seeing them preform it brought it to a whole new level.
What I would give to have been able to see them on Broadway.
They are both so young here. I saw the musical on Broadway twice, unfortunately it was not with them. But, we forever have them recorded on the CD. Beautiful performance. Amazing performers.
I have this on a tape recording. It was the Rosie O'Donnell show along with Ragtime, the Sun will rise, wilkomen, Love me as I am, a rent spoof, and Ship of dreams. this is my favorite.
While I don't quite share your sentiment of Private practice, I think the main reason she is doing it is to largen her fan base which she is doing. Nobody but the theatre world new of her before and being in relationship with Taye Diggs she has lined up more opportunities
She may also like the role. She is an actress, after all. Not everything an actor does, necessarily, has an ulterior motive. Also, being on an ongoing tv series is one of the best (and steadiest) gigs an actor can have. It's very comforting to have that kind of security.
Sorry, If I offended you I was trying to not blast sticky for a small minded comment. I love Audra and would watch her sing on the steps of Sesame street every week...
Haha! I'll join ya on Sesame Street! :) Don't worry, you didn't offend me. I was just trying to give a more realistic reason why actors tend to be drawn to serialized tv, like Private Practice. I'm an actress, so I sometimes jump a little too fast to correct people on their assumptions (i.e. that all actors just want to be famous etc) Sorry about that! I wasn't really upset, it just kinda came out that way.
P.S. I love Audra too! :D (And the amazing Brian Stokes Mitchell!)
I too, am an actor and to many Audra is famous, but you don't think Audra is trying to expand her base because as it stands people write plays on broadway for her, anyone who sees her in something loves her and I TRULY was thinking maybe her publicist is trying to spread around the Audra, not a diss on her in any way. Do you think people diss serialized tv just because, I wouldn't turn down a guest appearance because I don't think show is that bad...
Such a beautiful performance. I saw them live in Ragtime and it was a performance I will never forget.

Audra is incredibly talented and is WAY to good to be on the crap-fest Private Practice.
Stikkysweet69 3 years ago 2
While I don't quite share your sentiment of Private practice, I think the main reason she is doing it is to largen her fan base which she is doing. Nobody but the theatre world new of her before and being in relationship with Taye Diggs she has lined up more opportunities
mtywilli 2 years ago
She may also like the role. She is an actress, after all. Not everything an actor does, necessarily, has an ulterior motive. Also, being on an ongoing tv series is one of the best (and steadiest) gigs an actor can have. It's very comforting to have that kind of security.

Sorry, If I offended you I was trying to not blast sticky for a small minded comment. I love Audra and would watch her sing on the steps of Sesame street every week...
mtywilli 2 years ago
SwiftFoxProductions 2 years ago
I too, am an actor and to many Audra is famous, but you don't think Audra is trying to expand her base because as it stands people write plays on broadway for her, anyone who sees her in something loves her and I TRULY was thinking maybe her publicist is trying to spread around the Audra, not a diss on her in any way. Do you think people diss serialized tv just because, I wouldn't turn down a guest appearance because I don't think show is that bad...
mtywilli 2 years ago
Both Brian and Audra have done television series. Why not? Steady work is steady work.
