just chcked your blog and im going with the 590sp. will be purchasing on monday :) alot better than my new england firearms pardner pump 870 knock off. even though it was all steel and the trigger guard was steel it was kinda flimsy. the slide would just drop open if it wasnt pumped and the stocked was heavy as crap! good gun though had it for 5 years and put 700 roudns through it and it held up. pretty good for a 199$ shotgun
iv been debating on a remi 870 express 6+1 18.5 inch barrel or the 20" 590 special purpose with ghost rings. the 590 is 499$ and the express is 380$. is the extra 120$ worth it for the 590? i love the ergos on the 590 and where the safty and bolt release are at. any suggestions?
Overall I think u did an awesome review, and made a good point about the trigger guard and civilian applications. The most im doin is shootin some targets and a home defense type situation. Nicely done!
I have the 590 sp and it said on the box it had heavy walled barrel and I love it. It passed the mil spec 3443 as well. I love it I don't need an a1 just sayin.. good vid!
Good video. I'm weighing the pros and cons between the 590SP and the 590A1 and ran across your video. Good stuff. I'll be buying new, so I'm having to ask myself if the finish, heavy wall barrel and trigger guard are worth fifty more dollars? My mind will most likely change 50 times between now and when I order it. :)
@leadslanger I always say but what makes you happy. If it makes you smile when you look at it then the $50 is worth it even if you dont really need it. Dont buy to impress anybody but yourself. As for me I was buying used so I didnt have 2 off the shelf to choose from and I was happy with the SP model for basic home defense. If I had a choice I'd rather have the mil-spec heavy duty model just because thats what I shot in the military and its simply just cool lol.
Thank you for the useful information. Have been researching shotguns for awhile now. Does having the barrel ported lower recoil much or is it marketing bs?
@r71oats6 I think if you are shooting a shotgun at close range inside your house then porting is not really needed. If you are a slug shooter (like a hunter) then maybe porting is helpful to reduce muzzle rise but for close range work I dont see how spending the extra money for a ported barrel is going to really make a significant difference? I could be wrong though. Im no expert. Thats just my personal opinion.
@r71oats6 for close range self defense I dont think its needed. For long range slug shooting I'd say it has some advantages. Just my opinion though. I could be wrong since Im not a shotgun expert.
awesome. cool video. i lke the look of the wood stock. mine got synthetic plastic stock. id rather have old wood furniture. i thnk i might get a bayonet for mine just for the hell of it
@GhostInTheShell09 Thanks for watching. Get the bayonet for sure. It might come in handy if you run out of ammo. Im all about stacking the odds of survival in your favor and a bayonet could be useful. Its better than throwing a fist thats for sure.Plus its just cool lol.
This is going to be my next shotgun. I currently have a Benelli Nova Tactical. I like it, but have always wanted a Mossberg - I like their straightforward practical design and prefer Mossberg's safety placement over Remington's and Benelli's), and I like the SP. I agree with you about the wood furniture. Love it. I always appreciate your vids. Very educational.
Laughing at people that think a bayonet is dumb..... A bayonet does not need to be reloaded, and whilst you can use the butt to smash a skull, the simple fact is the bayonet allows you a little more distance from your enemy-not much, but maybe enough to keep you from getting stabbed or taken down. The zombies came during Katrina, and they are waiting to come during the next catastrophe again...
great review, got mine on order, can't wait, tried a friends last week on a practical shoot in the uk, all the other guys were using semi auto shotguns and had problems, the mossberg was faultless, totally outstanding shotgun.
Good review, it answered alot of my questions. Although you made a comment on the safety that caught my attention. Would putting a pistol grip make it more difficult to access the safety switch/button than with a regular stock? i plan to get a 590 SP for home defense and such, and although i would of course have the safety off if i knew something would go down, I don't think ill always have the luxury of a head start where i live. Thanks for your time.
@vicspyder Every gun has its strength & weakness...you just touched on the Mossbergs weakness. With a tang safety any pistol grip will be slightly harder to reach. That being said, it isnt a deal breaker for most if you dont plan on walking into a gun fight with your safety on. If you hear a breaking window, you grab your gun and take it off safe and go investigate. If they are already standing in your room then you have bigger problems than a safety location. Time to buy a revolver. (no safety)
@mixflip interesting enough, thanks for the info. And ill keep a revolver in mind actually. Thanks for the reply :J (so far in shotgun options its this or the remington 870 express, leaning more on this)
Good review! I realize you uploaded this video a while ago, but one thing I would like to point out is that you can get the 590 SP with a parkarized finish. I have it on my 590 and love it.
@stevothegrand I really like the look and feel of the anodized receiver and blued barrel. I dont know why? Maybe because it feels smooth and it gives it an old school look. Thanks for watching.
@mixflip I agree, they are both very nice finishes. I think the reason I like the parkarized (at least on my shotgun) is because it reminds me of a coated truck bed, and in-turn makes me think of reliability and durability. Strange I know :)
@rajvosa71000 Try Bargain Pawn on Las Vegas blvd & Lake Meade. They have alot of shotguns and lots of used ones that might be pretty low in price? Discount Firearms, The Gun Store, Lock & Load and New Frontier Armory and Dicks Sporting goods might have a few too?
@martinki11 recoil is related to the type of ammo you use not the brand of gun you shoot or who you work for. 00-buck will have significant recoil in any brand of shotgun (not just Mossberg) and for any person shooting it (not just cops & military).
@MrPoosa1 The mil-spec 590A1 has a thicker walled barrel, metal trigger assembly, metal safety button and metal ghost ring sights so its heavier by default. Not so much heavier for the sake of being heavy for combat? The 590SP is lighter because they use a cheaper barrel and plastic parts. Not to make it lighter specifically to shoot watermelons. I dont really know why anyone would be confused about this?
@mixflip I think the SP has it's place as much as the M590A1 does(different philosophies, IMHO), if I hadn't got lucky and gotten my Winchester 1300 12 Gauge Defender when it was still a 18 1/2" bbl w/7+1 capacity BEFORE FN changed the Defender to a 5+1 shot. But for a HEAVY DUTY/GO TO WAR SHOTGUN I'll take the 7 1/2lb M590A1, but if I have to MOVE QUICKLY, I want the 6 1/4lb Winny Defender! Imagine similar is true with the 'Special Purpose' 590, I do prefer the parkerized look though.
Where you are shooting looks very familiar to me. Would this happen to be in Vegas, on the freeway to Mt. Charleston, Past the Piute Indian Reservation? In the caleche valley?
i just got my 590 and i already had feeding issues and trigger reset issues i striped it down last night and it seems to be functioning right now that i put it back together with some gun grease perhaps its just a break in period if anyone else had the same issues please let me know..
@BekkerOnGunsNHunting I cant say what the issue was but its not uncommon for interfacing metal parts to need a little bit of working together to break in. A good cleaning and re-oiling is always a smart thing to do too before you go for your first shoot. Sometimes the factory packs in grease for protection in shipping. Kinda like brand new disk break rotors have to be clean before installation to get off all that packing grease.
Good review; however, there are many opinions on the trigger guard, which most are saying that sooner then later the plastic gives way. There are options in obtaining steel guard, which will out last the cheap plastic.
@1LonePuma Its a preference thing I guess? Glock and S&W M&P and SIG and HK plastic trigger guards hold up just fine and so far none have come back broken in a firefight that I have heard of lately? Plastic also doesnt expand and contract on contact with hot and cold weather like metal does so its definitely not as weak as some would think?
@mixflip The plastic trigger guards are really just that--PLASTIC. Not high quality/high engineered polymer-wonder stuff. It is really cheap, and I've seen quiet a few that were broken or cracked or split. Also, oil adversely affects MOST plastic. So, food for thought.
@1LonePuma Like I said, preference. I personally havent seen any plastic trigger guards break in my 20 years of shooting with the military and law enforcement but I am also not very high speed low drag so my experience may be rare and unique? I dont have a problem with plastic and I dont knock anyone who does? After all it is just plastic. Metal on guns is always a good thing.
@PancakeOnaAstick Its shot in the open desert so there is not much for the sound to bounce off plus the camera I used probably has a low quality mic? I did not edit the sound at all. Alot of people have asked my why its so quiet? lol. Thanks for watching.
@mixflip have 2 of these fun guns. love the bayo lug which takes the standard m-16 bayonette. Bought mine back in '96 for $300- 325 or so and both have the poly speedfeed stock WITH the parkerize. Recently rounded up 2 metal triggerguards from brownells, cool toys.
@armchairelitist Absolutely. Why? Because the Benelli cant mount a bayonet lol. Thats one of the cool factors of the 590A1 plus its just cool to own a shotgun that the Marines used to use. @Tranquillity45 Good to know. I just mentioned it because mine was blued. I figured the SP models were all blued but I was just guessing? Thanks for the info.
does any one know if the old school 5 pound metal slides for mossbergs are still available? i ant find one please any one with helpfull info respond :)
Awesome video. I was originally thinking of a 590a1, but today went to the local gun shop and handled a 590 SP. I like the ventilated shroud and bayonet lug. Nice options if (yeah, probably a big IF) I need them. Thanks for your opinion regarding the aluminum receiver - makes total sense. Also, I really like the "old-school" wooden stock/forearm. Along with the barrel shroud, it is reminiscent of the Winchester '97 trench gun, and heck, that gun was protested against in WWI.
Nice COD music. I got my 590 special purpose for $200 on a misprice at gander. They thought it was a 500. Do you know if there are interchangeable barrels for this gun?
Great vid and there is noyhing wrong with plastic as far as i am concerned either,i have a Benelli Supernova which has more than it's fair share of plastic and is the best pump action 12ga i have ever owned.I do like the 590 and will be purchasing one soon for home defense purpose's and having shot them before i know they are a very reliable 12Ga too
Hey man, Damn nice gun. Looks alot like the 8-shot Mossberg Persuader I have with the wood furniture, got a vid of it on my channel shooting snow with it. Love Mossbergs, always have. Have a goodin and Happy Shooting, yf, kdwoodjr

@mixflip i have a mariner mossberg 590 and im wondering if the wood would look right on it...
renagade12 1 year ago
@renagade12 It might look cool but wood doesnt resist salt water as well as polymer. I guess it doesnt really matter as long as you like it though.
mixflip 1 year ago
@mixflip There is not much salt water in the Las Vegas desert so I think I'll be ok.

Nice COD music. I got my 590 special purpose for $200 on a misprice at gander. They thought it was a 500. Do you know if there are interchangeable barrels for this gun?
jakeschlarb 1 year ago
@jakeschlarb Unfortunately, you can't change the barrels out on a 590.
