In honestly I think/know VSTs sound as good as any digital hardware these days.

However for me a real tangible synth inspires me. The hands on control and sex appeal of hardware puts me in a very creative mood.

A VST studio on a laptop puts me in the mood to write a word doc or go on facebook.

I will say from what we have o listen to. the vst is different but, close enough. Music listeners will not know the difference. I do think the nord have a warmer sound

@theHackerOfMayhem You do realise that vst technology is much more advanced than all current nord leads? You do realise that Nord leads are digital ...ie software. There are only a few differences that a DSP makes and in a mix you wouldnt be able to notice....hell i doubt you could tell the difference. I couldnt. If you cant get a good sound out of vsts then you are rubbish at production, there are plenty of top producers out there making music with vsts, more and more exclusively.

The VST sounds muffled when compared to the actual thing, but for the price it'll hold me down until i save enough for the wave :)

@sugarlessrobots Thats Youtube compression not the actual real sound. The plugin actually sounds a tad brighter than the real thing in this video when played through headphones so in reality they should be very close indeed.

The vid mentions the bend range cannot be controlled on the Nord, but that is not true. If you press shift+system until you get the letters br plus a number, you can change the pitch bend range. This is shown in the manual, but also on the top of the synth (list to the right of the knobs). Values 1-4 set the offset in semi-tones, while 5-9 set to offset to 7, 10, 12, 24 and 48 semitones.

no, is not very close, the soft is very far... the soft are plastic and lifeless filter.... the hardware have aggressive filters and modulation, yeah a real synthesizer... sorry for softylovers...

Right. Because the average listener can clearly discern between the two. The average listener knows what a Clavia Nord Lead is -and- about Discovery, and as such he will compare the two in his mind upon hearing my track. The average listener will -not- focus on the creative merits and musical attributes of the piece, and will surely dismiss my track as substandard when he realizes that I'm not using a real Nord Lead, but rather an affordable VST.

@VectronMusic I could hear the diff very well even in a crappy youtube clip. One sounds bigger, more professional, nicer on the ears & richer in texture. People notice the end result regardless of if they're a pro or someone with no ability to articulate that just likes the way it sounds. Some software is better than others of course.. but in this case it was an obvious difference.

It's better, but if you don't have the $ to drop on the best and music is more a hobby nothing wrong with that!

Even if I had the money, I'd put it into something useful and worth it... Like I dunno a Virus TI?? It's like you're implying I'm poor, so therefore I wouldn't understand. I've played the real thing. It's the most boring limited, piece of metal crap I've ever used man. It sounds great, but I know cheaper synths that can do better. (Virus, Ion, JP8k, NL3??) I mean for christ sake, I'm a apple fanboy and I don't understand the hype behind this stupid thing.
