Not bad actually. I thought this could be alot worse but I'm actually impressed with what the folks in this video found and did with it. I still would'nt do it though, but I have a little more positive outlook on freegans now.
@chechnya Actually there is no greater risk of getting botulism or salmonella than if you bought it in a store and I don't think you know what a hipster is....
Cops can stop you and they will question you, you could get introuble but ive never been caught with cops, but my friends have and they never got introuble we just tell them that we recycle this food to feed the homless at food not bombs
Have you ever gotten in trouble for dumpster diving? I'm free-curious after seeing this but also just imagining that cops wouldn't be too kind to someone rummaging around in a dumpster.
Most freegans I know do. I am definitely that way myself. Wouldn't buy meat cuz I know what my money is going into, but if the animal was already killed for food, why disrespect its life by letting it go to waste? Especially if it was killed in, say, Australia, and shipped all the way to your local Pasadena Trader Joe's.
Hey, this is a way cool clip. Good job, Eric, Davis and the lady I don't yet know! It's really interesting to see the different responses. :)
I've been dumpster diving (as almost my main source of food) for three years. You most likely will not get sick from bin food if you just use the same common sense you would you with your store-bought fridge items.
what is sick about prepackaged food that is not spoiled? All the food is pre or at sell date most foods are good weeks after the sell date. plastic wrap and glass will protect against bacteria. The only thing that is sick are the preconceptions that society has instilled upon you
you're getting raw food types confused with vegans. vegans don't eat meat or dairy (no animal products). a vegan has no issue with cooking their food.
My good friend fed us dumpster breadsticks from little ceasers for years and we didn't even know! It is crazy what gets thrown away, especially when there are starving people.
its insaine how much is wasted. not just food. i encourage everybody to rummage thru dumpsters of local resuraunts, grocery stores, and anything else. ive found new, boxed shoes, clothes, entire stereos, countless dvds, cds, etc. sometimes you can even find ipods, laptops and full pcs. even broken, they still have value to people that can fix them and re-sell them. who would want a landfill full of clean, un-used stuff? let someone else have your trash, it doesent hurt you.
keep it up man, with this kind of lifestyle you can save yourself from contributing to society while having our tax dollars go to waste as the doctors try to figure out what kind of dumpster disease you catch next
ive eaten dumpsterd food, just watch out for experatoin dates, rips/holes in containers, etc. pizza is a very common and usually very clean meal from dumpsters. dont get mad at somebody eating what you dont want, and dont knock it till you try it. and if you get sick, perhaps you should examin your choice of dumpsterd food a bit better next time. but really coryw25, why does it matter? i think your mad you didnt think of it 1st.
I know right. Sometimes the packaging gets a little roughed up. If a few or more bottles break. Some employees or supervisors don't even bother taking out the bottles that are perfect and they decided to toss it all. Happens all the time.
of course, there is a large amount of waste in Americas food indutry aloine, let a lone the Grocery indutry. I'm glad they didn't fake it with the salmon. warm fish = ish.
ive gotten sicker off eating at a restaurant than preparing my own, feshly dumpsterd food. most of it is tossed due to insignificant things, such as dents in cans, food that nobody picked up, thrown away in its container, breaded foods that will go stale by the next day, etc. its simply a matter of being wise about what free food you should take and if you really know how to cook to begin with.
cosmeticplauge, thanks for your informative comments. I agree that with a little common sense the risk is lower than from eating at restaurants. I've never got sick from dumpster food, but have gotten sick from restaurant food. If you're curious and live in the U.S. or similarly wasteful country, try taking a look in supermarket and other dumpsters - even if your not willing to eat what you find. It's eye-opening to see firsthand the amount of waste.
Wait, so are they foraging for EXPIRED food? lolwut? that's disgusting.

oh really, I'd like to see a vegan who doesn't believe in cooking this stuff to see how long they last without going to the hospital or dying

well, it's nasty in the same way using "recycled toilet paper" sounds nasty.
the truth is recycled tp isn't tp that's been pooped on and food pulled from the dumpster isn't coated with dumpster juice.
