  • Love this song

    But I'm an atheist...

  • a great song to listen to during black history month. :D

  • The pursuit of happiness =)

  • Was she African American?

  • @wcrobinson1985 what do you think? she looks white??

  • My favorite version of this song.

  • There's a lot of controversy surround the birth of this song. Some scholars also claim that this song was originally written by Inez Andrews (of Caravans). So watch out! Artists who didn't know copyright laws usually had their work stolen!

  • i like this song cause you need to clime mountain sometimes to get stronger and its always wise to ask the Lord for strength and encouragement to get trow it.

glory to GOD and God Bless :)

  • I love this original version of the song, it is pure and true. The lyrics fit with the chorus and make more since to me then some of the remake versions of this song. I'm so glad that you put the original version on here.... Thanks

  • Is it just me or does Ms. Akers sound like a smoother version of Etta James? Ironically she sounds like Etta James singing without the fiery growl.

  • Nice piano in this song

  • ditto, ditto, ditto...the pianist was great on this. Anyone know who it might have been?

  • Her voice was really moving...considering the time era she performed...

  • She has a good voice, nice choice of videos. 5/5

Love this more and more everytime I hear it.

  • Ahh I think her vocals are nice. A unique, rich voice.

The lyrics were pretty inspirational xD

Like the whole "give a man a fish, teach a man to fish" thing :]

  • Thanks for your comment! I agree, Ms Akers did have a unique, rich voice!

But I don't get your "give a man a fish, teach a man to fish" reference... what do you mean?

    :-P

  • I guess he meant

"If a man is starving, don't give him a fish, teach him how to fish"

Is what this song treats about tough, "don't remove that mountain, give me strenght to overpass it"

So, I guess is just a anology to ppl ask for the Lord is help, but not to solve the problem, but to help thelselves to solve it...

    :D

  • @karma342 He means that is better to teach how to solve problems than solve them for the other person. If you give a man a fish, he wont be hungry until the fish runs out, but if you teach the man how to fish, he can get food whenever he want and he wont be hungry again. Is the same thing with the mountain. "Lord don't move the mountain,

But give me strength to climb it"

  • I love this song ♥

She has such an awesome voice!

  • fabulous!

  • Ok :->

  • beautiful - she sings this song so smoothly and calmly - thank you Karma for introducing the late doris akers :-)

  • You're so welcome! Its my pleasure to be able to share her beautiful music with the world:-) Please listen to her other songs on my channel, and thanks for your comment! :-)

  • I didn't realize they had co-written! As a songwriter, this is a blessing to know! :-) Thanks for the background info.

  • I have the studio recording Mahalia did with a group of people. It's very similar to this one, but in the beginning with the organ intro, it actually sounds like the group is climbing up a mountain. They're huffing and puffing, trying to blow the mountain down. Lol!

    Nice post, Linda!

  • This is a testament of two women who experienced hard times and knew God!!!! I am currently dealing with a mountain; I know God is doing something in me to get the best out of me. Thanks for this song. It is right on time.

  • As I was listening to this song, It made me think back to the times that I was faced with trials and tribulations, I would always pray to God to please MOVE any obstacles or barriers that were in my way wanting to drag me down. For some reason this song makes sense to me. Why ask God to move the obstacles. Better yet, just give me the strenght to work and move around them. That way my faith gets increased and in the end our relationship is strengthened. This song is so inspiring! God Bless!

  • so very well said, and I'm positive you know what it's about, too~! Lord Bless You!

  • Wow,you live and learn lol! I never knew she had co-written this with Mahalia! I always thought this was Haley's composition! Again thanks for the info!!!

  • Yea, she sure did! Great composer, she was:-)
