Christians didn't always celebrate Christmas. In fact December 25th wasn't even Jesus's birthday. It wasn't in winter at all. Indeed, almost all of what people associate with Christmas (at least in America) was taken from other traditions, mostly pagan rituals and such. As the Christians set about dragging other people into the faith, they did so by incorporating those people's traditions and rituals into the religion.

That would actually be for the best. We should have an all inclusive holiday and celebration of peace, joy, family, and community. And, let's put it later in the winter so there is more time between Thanksgiving, and something to look forward to during the dreary months of winter. I haven't used it on a card in the last 2 years now, and I'm much more aware to say Happy Holidays (or such) to people instead.
