Thank you for your comments and insight. I loved him so much and he loved me too! He always showed so much excitement and energy and happiness when he saw me, and when I played with and spent time with him. I miss him digging in my pockets for treats. I miss our quiet time when he would groom me! He'd nibble all up and down my hand and arm, then he'd gnaw my elbow. When I'd try to pull away, he'd hold on and give me more nibbling. He was so funny. Thanks for writing to me.
You did good by Shelby, what choice did you have? So many people would have let him go or had him put to sleep at the first attacking another animal or wrecking your home/car. You did what you could to give him the best life he could have under the circumstances. You had the forethought to realize what would happen if he was let go. People get rid of cats and dogs for less. I noticed everything in that cage that was placed there with the purpose of stimulating him. You were AWESOME to him. :)
Thank you. I am remembering the good times, but his death is fresh on my mind. My routine with time spent with him is all changed. I am doing this (computer) instead of having our playing time together, and I am missing that. I won't get another raccoon, as I believe they should be free. My life circumstances have drastically changed recently and I was soon going to have limited time to spend with him, not like before when I was home all day and night...Thank you for your very kind words.
He was wonderful and I always felt bad that he had to be in the cage. I played with him off and on all day and into the night, for 15-20 at a time. Very often. I'd visit him quick too, as much as I could. My husband did too, when he was around. When he was a baby, he roamed outside, but then he attacked a neighbor's dog, and we had to build the cage. We used to take him for walks inside a pet stroller because he wouldn't wear a leash. He's free now in raccoon heaven.
Shelby wrecked my house when he was inside, then he went into the garage, and he took apart the weather stripping on my car. He attacked my old little dog too. Another reason for us building the cage. I hated the fact that he had to live in a cage. Sometimes, he didn't like it. This, I know. But he was very happy and he loved me. This, I know too. There is no animal on earth that would want to be caged. I loved him with all my heart and I did my best by him.
We were trying to find him a friend through a raccoon rehabilatator. We almost were given a blind female raccoon by the re-habber, but then she didn't follow through..licensing issues that she had...
I agree 100% with you. I know there were times when Shelby was bored and lonely. It made me sad, and still does. We let him out a couple of times, but it was very difficult to catch him and put him back in. Then it was as if, he felt even worse, for having a little bit of freedom, and then having it taken away....He was too tame to be free and I was afraid that someone would see him and think, "Oh look, a raccoon in the daytime and too friendly-he's probably rabid." He would've been killed.
what are the sizes of shelby's cage and his night cage and did you keep him inside and what are the sizes of that cage

Looks like a sweet animal, but I feel bad seeing him in a cage. How many hours per day is he free to interact with people and other pets?
