When you eat oysters at a restaurant ensure the shell is clean. A clean shell is an indication the oysters were cleaned and cooled quickly. Secondly, ensure they are seperated or cut from the shell they are laying in, you should not have to "Fork" them off the shell, they should just slide off. Third, ensure there is no shell peices on or around the oyster, a good shucker should be aware of the shell peices and remove them. Also smell them, if they they smell fishy they may be bad. Cheers!
Hey, you left out Gulf Oysters! I realize there is a bit of an oil issue in some parts of the Gulf but here in the Houston area we enjoy oysters out of Texas waters. I have also had very good ones from Apalachicola, Florida! And I enjoy Texas Shiner Boch beer but really prefer mine with a good glass of Sauvignon Blanc
@Eddierayporter Gotta Love it!! I Love my Castrol GTX SAE40 Raw oysters with tabasco, lemon, salt and pepper!! Y un shot de Tequila Corralejo after I take 2 dozen down!! -TX
I bought some oysters at an Asian market in San Francisco and the oyster was incredibly fat and had a white gooey creamy stuff running out of it when i ate it. I had to spit it out and almost threw up. I think it might have been bad.
we use oysters to cook a singaporean quite famous dish: the fried oyster
(it's like a mixture of potato flour, water and then we add the egg when the potatoflour mixture is almost cooked in the pan. lastly the oysters, but don't cook the oysters too long. and serve)
You should try this Oyster sauce: 1 Serrano pepper or 1 teaspoon Pickled Jalpenos. 1 can of Organic Crushed Tomatos. 1 teaspoon of Seafood sauce. Blend in a Food Proccesser or Blender until smooth. I hope you enjoy this Spicy Oyster Sauce. :D -Urmrslowguy
Slurping on raw oysters and downing it down with a beer brings back great memories for me. Unfortunately, due to my bad liver, I'm no longer allowed to eat oysters or drink beer for that matter but I'll always have the memories. Enjoyed the out-takes at the end = )
Thanks Paul. The first time I tried raw oysters was in Ireland at Moran's Oyster Cottage. It was a fun experience. That was over 10 years ago. My only regret was that I had my video camera with me and did not film a bit of it. It would have been cool to incorporate some of that footage into this video....
That would have been great footage to watch. I would love to visit Ireland on day and will Google "Moran's Oyster Cottage" after I finish writing this just out of curiosity. My car was attacked by wild turkeys about a year ago near the building where I live. I too was sorry that I didn't have the camera with me. Now I carry that camera everywhere just in case. You should too = )
Yes, we are now carrying a camera at all times. Tim was out last October and he carries the Flip with him. He advised us to get the Kodak ZI8. It's a great little-handy camera. BTW, you would love Ireland. I want to go back someday.... Moran's is pretty famous. The place has been visited by many celebrities.
I just looked at their website. You can't go wrong with a business that has been in the family for 250 years. That's amazing. Looks like a great place. Glad you got to hang out with Tim. He's a great guy.
You can eat them both raw or cooked. In this video I ate them raw. I may be doing a video on cooked oysters. Oysters Rockefeller is a common recipe for cooked oysters.
I never tasted Oysters, so i can't say anything about the taste..
In germany some restaurants put a little tomato sauce and grated cheese on top of them, stick 'em in a grill 'till the cheese melts and serve 'em like that.
They say it makes the Oysters less goey and by that some customers order them, that usually wouldn't.
I just wanted to tell you I enjoy your videos, I have watched them all, I am not a chef but close, just a master mixoligist for now, thanks for the tips
I can't eat oysters...they look like snot and when I try to eat them all I can think of is snot. I've have come close a few times, but have yet to go all the way and slurp one down.
I always tell people that don't like oysters that like many things they're an acquired taste. First time I ate oysters was rock oysters a guy was a BBQing and they had a very oceany taste. Was a terrible first oyster to try but later on I gave them another chance and had oysters prepared at a restaurant that were delicious though I can't remember what type they were off the top of my head. Great video Chef

I've only ever eaten fried oysters, never had a raw one, and only heard bad things about the taste.
BUT I heard the same about rare/undercooked beef, which I finally tried and found I loved. So, how do raw oysters compare to fried oysters?
JayeljayPLDH 2 years ago
I think your sources on the taste of raw foods don't know what they're talking about. Of course rare beef tastes better and so do raw oysters.
