Youre absolutely right. When asked where Im from I say I am a Zonian.Though I was born in Chiriqui since my first schooling in the old Amador area nursery school to graduating from BHS, saluting to the American flag every morning( I know the Stars abd Stripes better than Alcanzamos por Fin La Victoria!!)What can I say.I am a bizarre animal, a Zonian.
Rremembrance of the Napoli pizza place. All the owners are old geezers now and duly well endowed economically. I used to sell newspapers at the Balboa Clubhouse and Post office, also I picked coke bottles at the ball stadium. I had a Zonian chum named James Wilber who died quite early. I lived in Panamá but liked to wander over there where I learned English.
I am a Canal Zonian!! I lived in Fort Clayton, danced at the Teen Club, attended church on the base, graduated from Balboa High School, I graduated with Chipi Azcarraga, the son of the famous Lucho, ate mondongo, rode chivas, hung out at the Clubhouse, shopped at the commissary and received my early musical training at El Conservatorio Nacional de Panamá.
Some of us were born in the Canal Zone to Panamanian parents, doesn't this mean we are Zonians. Well not according to the definition in the video. Maybe it was a type o, or not.....
@Panahec I am sorry...I guess I was trying to be specific in the Zonian description, I think anyone fortunate to have lived in the Zone regardless of nationality is a Zonian!!
Brought tears to my eyes. I lived there for 5 years. I attended the elementary school near Big Tree for 2nd and 3rd grade. My favorite house in the whole world was the substandard one in Big Tree (demolished) When we moved to better housing, I went to 4th and 5th grade at Ft. Kobbe. I miss it till my heart aches. Thanks for posting the video.
Very fun video, I wasn't a Zonian, but I was stationed there. I miss Panama, it's my second country. The video brought back a lot of memories. Especially the lone about that crappy train, it spent more time in the dirt than on the rails when I was there in the 80's.
I'm sitting here crying like a baby after watching this video. OMY it was so great to see everything that was the CANAL ZONE. We we're sooo luckey to grow up there. And only those of us that grew up there can truly understand this video. Thanks guys!!!
Hey, I love this video, but the picture of the tamales is not of Panamanian tamales, which are normally wrapped in a (green) banana leaf. Bollos (snacks made of ground corn) are usually wrapped in corn husks. This video is really amazing, though, and I want to say thank you for making it. Brought back a lot of memories.
I love all of Shorty and Slim's music, I just wish there was a way I could get it with closed caption on it as well. I know a few Zonians that are hearing impaired that would love to be able to feel the rhythm while reading the Closed caption and watching the beautiful videos of Panama and the Canal Zone.

Nicely edited. I just met a Zonian and she seems, well, almost normal. Note I said almost.
