just splendid! I should say I prefer her in dramatic soprano repertoire which to my mind suits better her voice, too high and bright for a mezzo. Nice trick with a laugh, added a slight demonic touch to the performance.
I've come back to this a year later and I'm still overwhelmed by the power of voice and the brilliant characterization of Lady Macbeth. Only Verdi could capture Shakespeare.
OMG was that great. 11 years ago. Hard to believe, but Zajick is singular in her career. She came as Cossotto, Verrett and Bumbry were fading. Baltsa already fizzled. No one has come after. She's one of the few great voices in front of audiences today.
Dolora Zajick has a depth of feeling that is staggering - have seen her live several times in other performances. Her interpretations are such an intense pleasure -- thanks for posting, and now I think I'll listen to this several more times.
She is just extraordinary. I had the pleasure of hearing her sing her first Ortrud in L.A. Opera's "Lohengrin" last weekend. It was not Ben Heppner's night, unfortunately, but Dolora totally redeemed the evening with her brilliant singing. So nice to hear her singing Wagner now! Thanks for posting this!
there is nothing wrong with here interpretation or keeping up at the end! the chest voice was exciting and the top better than many a soprano! judge singers not by comparison, but on their own merits! and this as with any role should be cast on voice alone, not physical size or lack there of! Amen? Amen!!!!!!!
I love the laugh. She sings it well, but there are other interpretations that I would choose over this one. This is one role in which Callas is still, in my opinion, the definitive.

Fake! Everything that is 'planned' like that, not expontaneous is not natural! Plus Lady Macbeth comes across better with a voice like Verret's or Callas. Full of acid and less "fat" in the voice and definetely not a FAT character!
Gilfrey was singing Barber at this concert (very badly, I might add), and I remember thinking "what must MERRILL(attending) be thinking?" Larmore and Turay also sang, and Millo tried La vergine. Underwhelming. Then Dolora walks out and sings this. Oh my god. The house EXPLODED when she was finished. Everyone else sounded like a vocal FRAGMENT compared to this immense Macbeth aria. She obliterated the orchestra. Listen to her voice ringing through the hall when she cuts off both ighh B's.

Do not exagerate, please. Her voice looses stamina in the top if you compare it to Verret's or Dimitrova's. Plus her stage presence is pathetic! She cannot keep up the tempo in the end of the aria. She does not 'transmit' the essence of Lady Macbeth. She's a mezzo, real mezzo. Diferent than Verret that had a full spectrum voice. Lady Macbeth belongs to a true soprano.
Wow that was haunting! I may never be able to listen to another rendition of this after watching this video. This is the best I've ever seen Zajick. I do hope she's able to sing Lady Macbeth one day.
Great interpretation! Zajick's middle has a somewhat nasal quality that sometimes turns her voice less free and beautiful, but after a while you get used for a simple reason: this is a rare dramatic mezzo, a real mezzo, with a powerful and amazing low, a surprisingly wonderful top and a dark, really dramatic timbre. She is also an amazing musician and actress. In a recital she makes Lady Macbeth totally believable, which is something some singers can't make in a whole performance!
Amazing!!!! What a great surprise. I always prefer sopranos in this role but Zajick makes such a strong case and - in this aria at least - deletes EVERY memory of other mezzo Ladies!
Bravissima!!!

@wotanBrunhilde Clean your ears. Zajick is one of the fewl big-voiced and well-trained singers left in the operatic business.

What an amazing rendition of this aria.
When she laughed(evilly) in the middle it made my blood run cold LOL
She was at one with the orchestra and really made me feel that her Lady macbeth would do anything to get her way!

To ridicule an opera singer for her weight is utterly ridiculous. To criticize Zajick in such a lame and ignorant way makes you an ignoramus.

Magnífica la Zajick. Esa risita que suelta (no sé si está indicada en la partitura) añade mucho al aspecto siniestro de la escena.
