My wife brought me The Midnight Cowboy on DVD because I love it. If you have not seen it you are missing out! It explores the human condition beautifully and touches you.
Funny thing, the film was shown as part of a school film club organised by the boys themselves. Though it was a x rated movie (+18) not one of the 70 boys watching was over 16. Don’t think you would get away with that now.
The first time I saw this film and herd for the first time this wonderful piece of music was in 1972 at the age of 12. It was early in my first term at boding school feeling rather depressed with homesickness. The melancholy nature of the film and music reflected my mood perfectly. I have just herd it for the first time for many years and found myself tearing up as memory’s flooding back. Very good film though.
This movie was prolofic for it's time. Life-changing, for those in a fast paced America. To the person who knocks it....well, it is only your misfortune that you are not eclectic and spiritual about the human race. To the rest of us who are moved by Midnight Cowboy....It's a keeper!
one of my favorite movies. Look at Jon Voight-gorgeous. This film is a masterpiece. Definitely takes you back to a time forever gone. Dustin Hoffman nailed his character, as did Voight. I have always thought Dustin Hoffman was very attractive. thank you for posting. Love Harry Nilsson & this song.
Right on, i first watched this film 30 years ago, John Voight plays a fantastic charactor, so natural, Dustin Hoffman is at his best and the theme music is fitting to this all time classic.
@finrandil Ok. I guess it just sounds a bit different, Nilsson's voice sounds deeper or raspier or something. Perhaps it's just the change in audio from youtube?
@Sshelly34213 I know what you mean. There's just some loss in quality, with higher frequencies toned down. Or maybe it has been remastered since then. But still it must be the same source as the way he sings is identical... Anyway, this is a fine song and a damn good movie. :)
@finrandil Indeed, this is one of my favorite films! I absolutely adore Nilsson's voice and his cover of this song. It's also so fitting for this film, there's something very melancholy in Nilsson's version of this. Yet oddly enough it's quite uplifting at the same time.
@Sshelly34213 I have to watch it again. For me as a foreigner this movie feels like it captures the heart of America. Thinking of it, it's a little bit ironic as the director was British, but maybe because of that he saw it differently than an American would have. But that's just my guess. And to get back to the song, I glanced at the movie and must admit it really is a different version. So it seems he recorded a different version specially for the film.
@finrandil well I once read something on that, that the director was seeing NY from a foreign perspective. Things we see all the time and take for granted or ignore, he really noticed and brought out.
There are many versions of this song, I have the version at the beginning of the film, I have the version recorded on one of his earlier cds (very calypso) and then I have the version from the soundtrack. There's also another version in the film. Then there are alternate versions and demos.
I would say that "Midnight Cowboy" was ahead of it's time. Unfortunately, the quality of movies has declined so precipitiously over the last forty years that MC is just plain superior to the intellectually devoid films of today.
@DartmouthAlum96 It's not that the quality dropped, it's that people didn't feel like making films that were artistic. Check out There Will Be Blood, I consider to be one of the most emotionally moving films of the past 20 years.
@DartmouthAlum96 Yes so true! I'm only 20 years old and I always see the difference in films nowadays and those many years ago. Now all it takes is special effects and naked actors to sell tickets. Back then there was actually a story involved, that's why they can make movies like "Aliens vs Cowboys" now. "Slap in some action scenes and we're ready to go. A storyline? Eh, we don't need that."
@DartmouthAlum96 Why are there even more elitists now? I love this movie, but how can you just dismiss such artistically created movies like Reservoir Dogs, Goodfellas, and True Grit? How are movies like Fargo, District 9, and There Will Be Blood devoid of intelligence?
It's bad to like bad movies, but it's even worse to be so utterly dismissive and hateful towards such a large array of films, regardless of how many may actually suck.
@georgebettinger NOW THAT IS PRETTY FUCKING COOL! I got one for you...my UNCLE worked on the ORIGINAL captain america bike from Easy RIDER with Ben Hardy and Cliff Vaughs
Honestly? Way too cool!!! Too bad they didn't make more than one as usually do for movies. Did you know that Midnight Cowboy was the ONLY "X" rated movie to win an Oscar for best movie? Pretty mild by todays standards if you see some of the RAP videos out there! I don't know why TCM won't show this CLASSIC movie. It may have been "X" rated @ one time, but come on, not by todays standards by any means! Anyone agree w/me?
great song!
