If this movie would come out this year, there would be a shrink that demand that Bronson and Fonda haveto seddle their past with words and understanding...
I'm impressed. So there used to be a time when american cinema was really good. More than 8 minutes of silence, great music, intensity, and a final duel that ends up in a flash.
If that scene was remade, in today's hollywood, they would be fighting with gatlings, provoking one explosion every 3 seconds and killing 200 people (enemies, bystanders).
@StormWolf01 Id like to see American movies ever get this good. The director, the composer, and most involved are Italian. The director didnt even speak English
@Kankannan not fair! most Italian directors of the time weren't good as Sergio Leone, but their were many good directors from all over Europe working in Hollywood, Germans, Italians, hungarians, Russians and British.
@MartianSanta Well I was talking about THIS movie being THIS good, and Leone, who happens to be Italian. Only a handful of movies could compete with it in my opinion. :)
So I sat down my girlfriend who has never really seen a western, and played her this scene. I cut it off just after the gunshots at 6:11. She punched me on the arm and screamed "WHo won!!!! I NEED TO KNOW!"
We went on Amazon and bought all the Leone films. Winner!
@tiburcio9999 Your opinion and i respectfully disagree. For a few dollars more was indeed a beautiful movie, but I find this one more interesting, more exciting.
It is not the typical emotional movie, but that doesnt mean anything, I think it's totally normal to cry here, this scene and the music are so GREAT that its impossible not to feel it, it's love for art and cinema, its fucking epic.
Last sunday me and my dad were home alone and I was making some popcorn for us (no reason, just wanted some snacks). While I was in the kitchen he was channel surfing. As I was bringing us 2 bowls of popcorn into the living room he stopped on one channel - it was the very beginning of a rerun of OUATITW! Neither of us knew that it was on that night. Talk about perfect timing! Better yet - destiny! Epic movie as well as other S. Leone westerns! :D
This movie I saw in 1979 on the desolate Island Schiermonnikoog in Holland.
I was going to see a fantastic movie I was told by my dad. This was something new. No John Wayne and the old coyboy-indian fight. This was about something, what's life about. The struggle for justice.
A fight in the club where I saw it made it even surreal, This was life.... these kind of movies aren't made no more. It's a pity.
A brilliant performance by Henry Fonda! He was always the good guy in films and people were shocked to see him play such an evil character: people were going "Jesus Christ!, that's Henry Fonda!"
this as good as western or duels or films get. the journey ends here. no need to waste time on searching for better stuff if you understand sth of films. i was about 10 or 12 years as i saw the movie for the first time. it's not that it blowed my mind, that happens to most people that see that movie. it's that it changed my whole life, my view on things, my view on movies. its one of the few films i have to cry. only makes sense in original version. german's did a huge crime while translating it
Yes, in the German translation it never comes out that "Harmonica" takes revange for his brother, because in the German version Franks does not say "Make your loving brother happy" but "Play me the song of death" (which is also the German title of this Movie). So before seeing the English speaking version I assumed for years the guy they hanged was "Hermonica's" father.
In the german release of the movie he says "play me the song of death" instead of "keep your lovin`brother happy" thus putting an emphasis on the harmonica sound itself instead of the revenge of his brother. It kinda put me off, the second I knew about this, but if you think about it, its not that bad by itself. It gives the entire movie a completly new meaning. Btw, the movie is called "play me the song of death (spiel mir das lied vom tod)" in german,.
Ennio Morricone is the man who had the greatest influence in my life, starting with this movie (when I was 6 yrs old), then "La Piovra" series. I didn't even know that all those magnificent pieces were composed by one single person. His music had such a great impact on my sensibility and tastes. God bless him and his angelic music!
The greatest scene ever...just before this when Harmonica has been waiting, Frank rides up and Harmonica says "So you found out you aren't a business man after all",and Frank replies "Just a man" and Harmonica says "An ancient race"...God, I love this epic movie.
you can call me gay, but this is so intense that it makes me cry. i feel like the double rainbow guy. and i'm not on drugs. i remember when i saw that for the first time. i was 6 (i'm 20 now) and for the first time of my life, my parents let me watch a movie in the evening with them. my father said to me : you're allowed to go to bed very late tonight, because i want you to see something you'll always remember, i want you to see this movie. and i WILL remember it for ever. rest in peace dad
@Schaezen You're gay. Just kidding. This is one of the most emotionally intense scenes in all of film -- and the music is what really does it. Don't worry about it.
@Schaezen Anyone that calls you gay for crying over the beautiful justice in this scene is a coward who is afraid to show they feel for it too. You're not gay at all man, in fact you're more of a goddamned man because of it.
@Schaezen Your father was a great guy, makes me think of mine, and you're not alone: I have to swallow tears every time I watch this movie. It's just too big.
@Schaezen: They don't make 'em like this anymore. This kind of emotion, this kind of power. I have goosebumps and tears in my eyes every time I watch it. Just like Once Upon a Time in America, my all-time favorite movie. Sergio Leone was a unique genius.
Without a doubt, when it comes to cinematic confrontations, this sequence remains unpararelled. Morricone's score at his most powerful. Camerawork as exceptional as in Leone's earlier Dollar Trilogy. That zoom which makes Bronson's eyes fill the entire screen at 4.10 still makes me gasp. Listen closely to Bronson's gunshot, so unique when in just a split second, you hear the gun clearing leather, the cocking of the hammer, the firing, and finally, the report echoing in the mountains.
I also like the seen just before this when he whittling on a piece of wood and talking to Frank.... when he stops whittling I think something going to happen.
the look on henry fonda's face when he finally realizes who charles bronson is just before he dies with the harmonica in his mouth is priceless!...watta great western!
