  • I had one of these when I was 9 or 10. A school mate of mine knew a friend who had a few of these. One day had came back from a trip with his folks down south and bought some fireworks. The guy selling the fireworks told the kid he could blow up the SSD with a few firecrackers. So he stuffed a few firecrackers in the rear of the Chevy Wagon, lit it up...AND...BOOM!!!!! The car went up 20 feet, and then crashed on impact, virtually destroying the car! That was fun!!!!

  • I am an "ol' GAL" and I had this too! I loved playing with it. Couldn't get enough of it! I wish they still made them; I would get it for my grandkids.

  • dude! i spent the last 3 days trying to remember the name of these, as i was compiling a list of "dangerous toys". jarts was #1 of course, but these run a close 2nd place. it was a right of passage to snag the web of your hand up in the driving wheel. or like i did with my brother, you knelt done facing each other about 6 feet apart and sent them head to head for a collision. most the time though you just kneecapped each other with 7 pounds on high grade steel.

  • I had these cars... Too cool.. Kids nower days would not want anything like this.

  • I Loved this toy!!! (I bet it sold well south O' the border!)

  • :..Cousins had those, in Mexico were renamed as 'Pilotos Infernales" Inferno pilots.

  • Lol I just found an orange one(minus parts) in a snowbank yesterday! My brother and I launched these things off everything. Ramp to big book to cleared coffee- table. A really big pull meant it went all the way down the hallway beyond that! All the tiny dents in the walls. Go big or go home! ;)

  • @HDXCify dont forget getting the web of your hand caught up in the rubber and steel driving wheel.

  • Right chere? Where the hell is that?

  • @MrHueJazz1 It's the Southern U.S. way of saying 'right here'.

  • I used those ramps for every other toy I had that had wheels, from my Matchbox and Hot Wheels cars on up. I used to secure them and fly my badass metal Tonka ambulance over them :)

And it's the Melochie Crunch! 0:08

  • I loved this toy as a kid. But looking back at it now, it looks pretty damn lame.

  • I had this. The various parts, like wheels, stayed in my lego box for years afterward, lol.

  • Where can i get one?

  • wow I remember this, been a long time, now it looks dated, last time I saw it it looked new :P

  • smash up derby , road hockey ....no wonder my knees are shot now that I'm in my 40's

  • @trotts19 my brother and i would face off from the kneeling position with these. 3 pounds of steel straight to the kneecap, pow! tried to by my neph a decent cap gun last week and couldnt even find one...

  • Crash, bang, lose the parts.

  • SSP Damn I remember that mine had sparks coming from under it! It was a dragster!

  • yar bee bak

  • OMG!!!! I remember this!! I had these!!!! Wow!

  • The only thing I still have today from this is one of the ramps. Good times good memories

  • it didn't come with little dots that pop up :(

  • Comes with everything you see rightcheer

  • I wish i still had mine... i got one in 1980

  • Have you seen how much these and the VW Station Wagon ones cost on ebay. As much as it is not good to hoard, its wise to keep things from when you are young for both sentimental reasons but also financial. One wanted 200 dollars!

  • Why they never had a "dukes of Hazzard" set..i will never understand. (wink)

  • @danieljh yeeeeee hawwww thats a good idea. i would so love to smash up boss hogs caddy!

  • I found mine in the attic at my folks house still in the box.My kids keep saying ebay. I don't think so I ain't through playing with it.

  • I loved these!! But i remember being so pissed when my folks got me it, and when i opend the box it was the updated set w/ the vw bug, and a pick up truck!!-lol- I wanted the 57 chevy so bad!!

  • @agridomer - I know how you feel - my folks were just as good at getting me ALMOST what I'd told them I wanted for Christmas (though, ironically, my mother seemed to buy just what I wanted as gifts for kids whose birthday parties I had been invited to).

  • I was notorious for losing small parts to toys I had. For some reason, though, I never lost a single piece of my Smash-Up Derby set.

  • Cool I say fuck hot wheels

  • Holy cow! I loved these things when I was a kid.

  • I had a dragster ssp and we use to put a little oil down on the garage floor so when you pulled the t strip and set it down it would "burnout" too cool!

  • Dang, I forgot all about this one!

I wanted one of these pretty badly when I saw it on TV. Never said so out loud, though... Would've been fun to have.

No way it'd pass the safety board today... it's too cool.

And "right cheer" for the win.

  • I had that set in about first grade, and also a purple plymouth superbird non smash up one.

  • I had one of these sets as a boy + loved it...one of my favourite ever toys. Lots of happy memories.

  • my dad has one i play with it when theres no school... lol ps3 stinks

  • "Smash-up Derby set comes with everything you see right cheer"

  • I had those. It was very hard to have both cars hit just right off the ramps like in the commercial. It was easier to just run them into the wall.

  • i always wanted one of these , but for some reason never got one . but when i reached my adult life took part in real destruction derby races . much more fun!!!!!

  • Damn I remember this. I had this set back when I was 7. Its funny how toys changed in my childhood. Back in the 70s if you could make a kid friendly fragmentary grenade (which this kind of was) it would sell, then as little as 6 years later all toys that had spring loaded missiles were made illegal in this country. Our children are probably safer for the change, but I sure miss them just the same.

  • @magesfolly F%@& "safe". I always felt that the danger factor of toys made in the 50's thru 80's, was a sort of natural selection thing. If a child is too stupid to play with a toy, without harming, maiming, or killing themselves, (although a little playful pain can tuffen'em up) perhaps it's for the best, as it's doubtful they'd make it in society. (the real world being less forgiving than a spring loaded toy or lawn dart). F&@$ing Nanny state bastards. Bring back based lead paint, damn it!

  • These things were great!! They gave my cats a nervous breakdown though!

  • had a set of these, best toys to learn to live in a post apocalyptic world.

  • I got this toy back in christmas of 1973.

  • Wish someone would re-release this..and have it "Come with ev'rything you see right ch'ere!"

  • @wsbtam HAHA I stil say ''Right cheer'' because of this commercial!

  • I got one for christmas.. The 57 chevy. Man it was so cooool. Those were the days.

  • Man this take me back. My little brother and I had em'.

  • i had one too..

  • i had one too but it was black and yellow

  • I remember when!!!! A Christmas present during the early '70s

  • I got this back in Christmas of 1975 when I was 7! Unfortunately, my younger brother and I pushed those cars to the limits, and broke them for real!

  • I smashed up ALL of my toy cars because of this commercial!

  • Oh yeah! My absolute FAVORITE toy as a kid! Better than G.I. Joe, even better than Battling Tops! Check out the super-cool youtube vids for Battling Tops! What a game!

  • Yea I had one too. It was the VW and the Chevy truck. Course I ended up losing most of the parts, and threw it away.... Could have sold it for a pretty penny now. Stupid kids...lol.

  • Oh yes. I had one of those when I lived in Texas in 77.

  • How cool thanks for posting i'm over 40 now and I sitll have the cars LOL

  • Thanks for Video, I forgot about this toy & we played with them until the cars until they had strip out gears.

  • Im 45 and remember these fondly. There was nothing better than toys you were encouraged to tear the crap out of!!

  • @avidrocker I feel for you, i'm 41 and I had the Volkswagan and the Pick Up Truck now I got the smash up derby in my display case and all the pieces.

  • I had this kind, and the the kind that you just pulled the rip cord and let them race. Man, I miss these retro-toys.

  • My uncle had this, I used to have the cars

Don't know what happened to them

  • Comment removed

  • My brother and I had these as kids. We had a hell of time trying to get the cars to hit each other. lol

  • I had these when Iwas a kid , the good thing was if you got board with the cars just park them between the ramps and jump them with your evel knievel stunt cycle, now that was good fun!!!

  • ha ~ I did the same thing with the ramps and the stunt cycle. What a small world.

  • Don't know where you found this but thank you for posting it! P.S. My kids are laughing their ass off at me now!

  • Yessssss ! Loved mine ! Mine though had the vw and the datsan pick up truck

  • Wow! I don't remember this ad, though I do remember the joys of owning my own 'smash up derby' set. I had the one with the red and blue stationwagon and the blue volkswagon bug. I wonder what ever happened to 'em? This must have been in 1983 or so.

  • I got this set in 1970-71 and my parents took me to visit my aunt and unc. I brought it with me to play it with my cousin. He was gone the whole day with a friend so I went into a bedroom and set one ramp up against a wall and played by myself. Wasn't as much fun that way. I was SO bummed that day. Will never forget it.

  • Another awesome toy

  • That was my favorite toy ever.

I never did get the tire back from under the fridge.

  • protest to jasmin toys (they make smash up derby now) to remake smash up derby like it used to be and not with suvs like they do now

  • I had my smash up derby for a while, what a blast it was until I stripped the plastic gears on the rip cord. BUMMER. Thanx for the good memories

  • How old was thy brother? Maybe he was my age, I am 45, thank you.

  • My late brother and I had these cars!!!! So much fun smashing them to pieces!!! :) I miss those days. :(

  • I remember those. they were cool.

  • I remember this commercial airing when I was a little kid in the 1970s. Damn, but I wanted this toy. My family was dirt poor and we couldnt afford store bought toys advertised on tv like this one. My toy collection pretty much consisted of mis-matched odds and ends, bits and pieces, that were handed down to me by friends, or found in the streets somewhere, etc. Toy commercials, like this one (and being a big watcher of tv, I saw thousands of them), only served to torture me.

  • You can go on ebay and bid or buy, but I must warn you, they'er hard to get if you bid. So I brought mine from ebay all the parts and good condiction, I have the Volkswagen and the Pick up truck and they still work. So if you can aford the Smash up derby set, go for it, and good luck. Oh yeah, look under smash up derby.

  • I wish I could go back in time and get you this toy and drop it off at your childhood home as a surprise for you.

  • "I wish I could go back in time and get you this toy and drop it off at your childhood home as a surprise for you"

Now thats a very kind, NICE thought! :-) Thanks! :-)

  • They were the coolest when I was but a kid in the '70s. We used to run them down a gravel driveway, and they would break apart just from that.

Of course I had to stuff my GI Joe with the "Kung Fu" grip in the car. Wasn't easy without breaking his legs and arms.

  • I collect these RARE vintage toys. I have some for sale, contact me at:

    ert113 @ hotmail. com

    Just take out spaces above

  • I had them all they were the best. Along with the Red Rubber K-Gun ping pong ball gun. Two of my most favorite toys as a kid. Wish I still had them.

  • dam futureistic toys aint got no dam skill any more..... the toys now days suck..

    but that ad looks awesome

  • I had this set...on the first day I lost most of the pieces as they flew down the heating vents of the house and began to melt.....man was I crushed..

  • FFFFFFFFLASHBACKs!!!!!

  • I had the Smash up derby set with the Volkswagen Bug & The Pick up Truck. Thanks for the good ol days.

  • When I was a kid my mom got me a toy called Jalopy Showdown- don't know the maker. It had battery op 2 cars that ran on a figure 8 track. At the juncture of the 8, they would crash and fly apart when hit broadside. Anyone remember that toy? It was during the early 70s. Is there any video of it around? Just curious...

  • I had one too and wished I still had it..

  • I find these frequently on EBAY. I've even seen them complete in the original boxes! Of course you may pay a pretty penny for it but if one could afford it it'd sure be fun to have again. WHY GROW UP?!?

  • I agree I got the Volkswagen and the Pick Up Truck, 100%.

  • please post a video of them in use?

  • @kfirmedia

I am sad, why dont they still have these today?

  • @kfirmedia the Australian set was even better released by " Toltoys " , the ramps were 3 piece for each ramp , a better quality white / clear nylon rip cord , cars were the same , the first smash up set with the chevy and ford , had toltoys written underneath , instead of Kenner , and i dont think the parts were exactly the same for the 2 brands , [ you cannot quite interchange the 2 ] although looked the same , i had a purple laker special , my freind had the smash up set , i collect these now

  • @EnduroCrazedManiac Me too...

  • Me and my brother had the set with the orange pickup and the little blue vw bug. And of course I went on to do demo derbys, still do. Been doing them since 1985.

  • OMG, me and my bro had these when we were kids! They were the coolest.

Thanks for bringing back some groovy memories.
