"Look at the bias in Jim Lampleys commentary".... Should of been the quote instead of look at the hand speed of Meldrick Taylor. I give Taylor all the props in the world for fighting the way he did and doing what he did in the fight, but man i have never witnessed more one-sided commentary in my life. Thats just the truth straight up.
@bmillerdrums Don't you love how from 2:24-2:26 Taylor throws a flurry that the Great Chavez made useless and detrimental to Taylor, by using the Sweet Science, hence, defending every single punch of the flurry by way of an advanced form of the Bob&Weave known as "Riding". Yet that shameless son of inequity known as Jim Lampley can only bring himself to say is, "Brilliant stuff from Meldrick Taylor!". He pegged the wrong guy for the "brilliant stuff". What JC did was the brilliant.
@TheChoice264 I couldnt agree more.. Youre a good man for understanding this fight. I tell friends about this fight from time to time and you get such mixed opinions on this fight/subject. Only a select few really know the true mastery and brilliance that was a prime Julio Cesar Chavez.
head in the right place that night who had Chavez ahead. What is boxing is the question.. It is a point associated match btw 2 combatants but its also a fight. And in a fight like this one the more severely damaged fighter.. How can someone say he is the winner meaning mel obviously.. People should watch the fight in real time not on legendary nights and really pay attention. Mel was hurting from rd 5 on.. Chavez just had heavier hands/thicker bone structure who knows? But he fucked this dude up
@bmillerdrums You're right, Chavez really did a number on Meldrick. Just completely destroyed him as a fighter. Controversial end, sure, but that's the way it goes. And yeah, Lampley, Merchant and SRL were totally carried away with Taylor the whole fight, especially SRL. He came off as an asshole to JCC fans, that's for sure.
its hilarious to me that these commentators were stating that Mel was dominating... Its pure b.s bc while he might have been landing a high volume of shots he was also absorbing a tremendous amount of punishment which was evident at the end of rd 7. Blood from nose/mouth facial swelling etc.. Boxing is not just judged on volume there are other judging criteria like damage and power shots. But bc it was the american boxer against the mexican puncher the commentating was so bias. One judge had his
Man, I think they were both strong, willing, and determined fighters.
But damn, that referree was like a futurist. He was the only one who knew that Medrick was taking a serious beating. Its like he knew how Mederick would end up so he gave the match to Julio. It would look strange if Mederick won, and to then see the brutality he would go through and the beating Julio took and made it look small.
If you look closely, Chavez was looking at Taylor while Dteele was asking Taylor if he was ok. Chavez sees Taylor is not responding and begins celebrating before Steele waved the fight off. It boggles my mind how people want to rationalize rules. Taylor didnt respond. End of story.
Taylor may have been a great fighter but not a smart boxer. The goal is to out point your opponent especially if you're taking a beating. Robinson, Ali, Leonard and many other great fighters would have never stood toe to toe with a fighter that simply could not be hurt. Chavez is someone who doesn't even swell up while taking a beating. Chavez is one of a kind and a great boxer but we all know Taylor fought a dumb fight.
Meldrick Taylor behaved like a real warrior, never stopped a fight despite his physical condition deteriorated so badly, that's why you deserve my respect and admiration, a great fighter
Meldrick Taylor se comporto como un autentico guerrero, jamas dejo de dar pelea a pesar de su condicion fisica tan deteriorada, es por eso que se merece todo mi respeto y admiracion, un gran boxeador
If you watch the fight minus the biased commentary, you see it's a very close fight. Taylor would have earned the split decision, but he did not dominate or win every round like know-nothing Lampley says.
Landing 4-5 to five quick slapping arm punches doesn't, or at least shouldn't, count as much as the two hard shots Chavez was landing in return from about round 5 on. People get caught up in the speed, without realize that the thudding shots of Chavez were the punches actually doing damage.
@SerUresto - - thats my argument with leonard V hagler , do 4 or 5 flashy pitty pat shots cancel out 2 crushing punches ? people romanticize the taylor v chavez fight - but when you focus on chavez' punches and not just taylors speed you see the damage he was inflicting.
did steele make the right call ? - hell yeah.
could taylor have finished the fight ? - hell yeah .
what a piece of shit Duva is. he totally lied about what he said to Taylor entering the 12th round. he told him to fight cuz he needs the round to win!!!!
@juice887 Youre fucking nuts... No offense bro sorry you are entitled to ur opinion i just disagree totally. Chavez in his prime would of beat anyone around that weight. Especially other brawlers like Duran played right into Chavez game with his granite chin literally i think sometime and his heavy hands. Real boxers like Taylor are fighters that would give Julio trouble but like in this fight, eventually Chavez will get to you. My dream matchup would of been Chavez vs Aaron Pryor what a fight!
@juice887 he was 21 when he first lost in 135 pounds chavez would have killed him if he had stayed at around 140.. chavez never lost in his prime..and has all the records that exist if you know of statistics chavez is the best ever..duran was a clown that was never even the best at any weight..lost all his big fights..hangler..hearns..benitez..and and his famous no more again leonar..chavez is remembered for his great wins and duran for his losses
@tono3022 lol even though he only lost when he was old and out of his prime. dude duran is remembered for the way he destroyed everyone at lightweight (the first de jesus fight was after a car crash) and the way he owend leonard in there first fight (he whent up to 230 pounds after this so the second one is kind of moof) fact is duran is better than chavez yes chavez is great but duran is a legend
@tono3022 roberto duran is known for being arguably the greatest lightweight fighters in the history of boxing! you say duran is known for his losses well look at the fighters he lost to!! if you honestly think julio cesar chavez was going to beat thomas hearns or marvin hagler your on crack!!! chavez was great but theres a very strong possibility he woudnt have beat ray leonard either! there is absolutley no shame in losing to these men especially seeing as duran went up in weight to fight them
@pkbosslac@pkbosslac Leonard is so biased, because if he wasn't, he would basically acknowledge that his bullshit flurries/arm punches, that mostly missed, hit Hagler's arms/shoulders etc didn't count for much either, except if you're SRL
@canibusnj That right there what you just said, that takes balls, and a real man. I respect that. Not because you agree with me and others about this fight, becuase we all know you don't. But, because you are now respecting a great fighter and a great champion. Most people are incapable of change, especially past a certain age. It takes a real man to be able to step outside of his perceptions and see another world out there. I respect that. I respect Taylor and ALL Philly fighters. TRADITION!!!!!
@pkbosslac Relax dude, I love EL GRAN CAMPEON MEXICANO. Julio Cesar Chavez is an honorable and deserving champion, a true hall of famer and he has my respect.
@pegazzo1 LMAO your right buddy its not the the boxing experts that were right, its not the officianado's reporters judges and fans around the world...its you....a beaner with a laptop that has us all dooped FUCK YOU asshole that goes beyond nationalism thats just ignorance
The HBO commentators are very biased. Mayweather vs Marquez was pure dominance. Taylor was winning the rounds, but Chavez was also landing really good shots during the rounds that made it close. This was not a pure dominance performance by Taylor.
anyone else find it weird that Lou Duva wont even admit what he said to Meldrick even when the actual audio is played? not to take anything away from his accomplishments but man that was the most idiotic advice ever given
@lickstickly man Lou Duva never had a fight in hes life never box, he had real knowledgeable people that box like gorge Benton in hes corner he was nothing but a cheerleader.
As sad as this stoppage was, the ref had a point. Taylor was destroying Chavez as far as boxing goes. He really was landing at least 2 to 1, but Chavez's shots looked like they hurt sooooo much more.
Just look at Taylor's face! I think Taylor easily won the first 8 straight rounds, but he was getting the hell beat out of him at the same time!
See Cotto vs. Margarito for a more modern example of this.
@pegazzo1 Very true, it was an excellent brawl, by the way I saw your page, you like Kiss and that's cool, and like I said you seem like a spiritual Mexican brother, you should listen to some Earth, Wind and Fire, very spirtual and legendary group who make inspirational music, PEACE!
@canibusnj Props to the Earth,Wind, and Fire reference. You're not as dumb as you like to pretend to be. ;) My San Anto bro's and me given a shout out to Philly. Peace!
@pegazzo1 That's cool, but I disagree with you! I remember the chats we had a while ago, YOU ARE a knowledgeable person and spiritual one as well, THOSE PEOPLE ARE BUILDING A PLACE TO ESCAPE TO, I'M GLAD YOU KNOW ABOUT THAT!!!! PEACE!
@pegazzo1 YEAH RIGHT FUCKER AND THAT'S WHY CHAVEZ SAID AT THIS YEARS HALL OF FAME THAT TAYLOR WAS THE BEST FIGHTER HE EVER FOUGHT IN HIS ENTIRE CAREER!!!! (116 FIGHTS) TAYLOR WASN'T THE FIRST AND UNFORTUNATELY WON'T BE THE LAST FIGHTER TO HAVE A FACIAL FRACTURE AND TO GO TO A HOSPITAL AFTER A BOXING MATCH! Taylor gave a very poor boxing lesson LOL, yeah sure and Mexicans acknowledge that the indians are the TRUE AZTECS. LOL Taylor gave a very poor boxing lesson, FFFFFFUUUUUUCCCKKKKKKKKK YOU!!!!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@canibusnj nigger, you cant get that stick out of your ass yet? your nigger from philly lost to chavez! twice! are you that fucking stupid, ape?? we let you wear clothes now.act fucking civilized
@canibusnj your another asshole who barley reads the first history books page and thinks he knows plenty theres mixed from Spanish and Indian , and theres Indian aka mestizos and there were diffrent and many tribes but all were known as aztecs get it ? one big community diffrent tribes but they got the blood in them..idiot
@canibusnj You appear to be in more pain than Taylor was after Chavez finished his career. Thankfully for Taylor, (and you) championship fights were reduced to 12 rounds, or else he would be somewhere else.
@theGoatzee4000 Yeah, that as at the end of round 11 and then Steele has to guide him back to his corner and look at how he walks back to the corner and gets assisited in sitting down and then look at how fucked up he is in the corner. Then notice at the bell for round 12 how fresh and focused Chavez is in the corner and then RUNS to the center of the ring to meet Taylor. Then...with a minute to go the Duende takes hold of Caesar's Palace...."and all the SUDDEN!".
This wat mayweather be talkin bout, aint shit cool bout gettin hit, If he fought like floyd he would have won easy, out box that mother fucka (uncle rodge mayweather voice) lol
chavez es el mejor ke a exsitido en el boxeo de mexico (chavez is trhe best that had ever existed fucke don king chavez was in the ring he did the work and won he is the best fuck don king and haters
@canibusnj "I would like to see Chavez stand and fight Sugar Ray Robinson or Henry Armstrong!!"--Canib. Me too bro. Me too!!!!! Hey, let me ask you, we know that SRR beat Armstrong even tho Armstrong went the distance allegedly because SRR didnt want to KO him because Hammerin Henry was one of his idols. But, who do you think wouldve won had they met in Armstrong's prime? Viewing SRR's fights with LaMotta, I'd have to go with SRR(and no I'm not comparing Armstrong to LaMotta).
@TheChoice264 "@canibusnj "I would like to see Chavez stand and fight Sugar Ray Robinson or Henry Armstrong!!"--Canib. Me too bro. Me too!!!!! " << you guys are nuts. I hope this is some sort of mistake and you mean Sugar Ray Leonard, not Robinson. Robinson was a middleweight (possibly greatest MW of all time). How is JCC gonna fight a REAL MW and stnad any sort of chance?! You MUST be thinking SRL or you're crazy.
@k4n31985 No, I can't speak for Canib, but as for myself, of course I know that Chavez couldnt have fought Robinson. Robinson started his professional career as a welterweight, and is, in my opinion, the greatest welterweight in history. Chavez began his pro career,at age 16, as a bantamweight. Chavez won his first title as a superfeather. Robinson eventually grew into a middleweight. JC eventually grew into a Jr.Welter. JC only fought as a welter once(Whitaker), and was 3 lbs under the limit.
@TheChoice264 I know all this, but SRR imo excelled as MW, not so much as WW (even though he was still great). I'm not really a fan of p4p matchups, as it's too unrealistic to really compare speed (which is a huge factor). You can somewhat compare p4p power, but speed not so much, and not even chin, really.
@k4n31985 Robinson, in my opinion, was the greatest welterweight in history, and one of the greatest middleweights in history. Chavez, in my opinion, was the greatest jr. welterweight in history, and one of the greatest superfeather and lightweights in history. So, of course, I know SRR was too big for JCC. What I was referring to was a pound for pound match-up. If they could fight at the same weight and still have all their skills, who would win? Could you imagine? Great fights.
@juiceeddieshow222 What are you talking about, man? Roberto Duran, Marvin Hagler, and Thomas Hearns were very dangerous fighters! Even Ray Leonard said that Duran's punches pushed his front teeth back a bit. Please don't ever make such an ignorant comment like that again, seriously.
Chavez was the best! I don't see why the clock should have been ignored and Taylor get the win. I was hoping Taylor would win this fight, but, Chavez won this fair and square.
@juiceeddieshow222 So let me get this correct...Hearns, Duran, and Hagler wasn't dangerous opponents for Leonard??? Marco Antonio Barrera, Corralas, Mosley, De La Hoya wasnt dangerous for Mayweather??? Yeah sure...Hell, if Mayweather would've fought Marquez at 135, it would've been a more competitive fight. By the way, Taylor won this fight, period....
@japan817 Even if Taylor won the fight by points, he would have never been the same. Chavez nearly sent him to his grave, and now Taylor's brain dead because of Chavez's unbelievably powerful punches. Personally, I think if you beat your opponent so decisively to the point where you nearly kill them then that's a victory. Taylor's punches were like slaps to Chavez, and even Chavez's face only had a little scratch between his eyebrows. Imagine if this fight took place in 1988 with 15 rounds @_@
Only reason Chavez got more shots in into the latest rounds is because taylors eyes were shut ;-) If taylor had fought more wisely he would have won this fight but Chavez had a good comeback and a strong will to come back after a boxing lesson
"in the past 50 years no professional boxer has begun a career and sustained unbeaten success for as long as Julio Cesar Chavez". enough said, enjoy your beers :)
"in the past 50 years no professional boxer has begun a career and sustained unbeaten success for as long as Julio Cesar Chavez". enough said, enjoy your beers :)
@zeuslives11 Listen chavez is one of the all time greats, but how can you say he would of killed duran? at lightweight? Duran was a lightweight and he went 15 rounds with Marvin Hagler at middleweight! hearns didnt last 3! Like i said i love chavez he is one of the greats but Duran is the greatest lightweight of all time only a bias fan would disagree. Peace.
@SugarRayP4P Not true. I'm a big fan of both fighters and am completely unbiased. I think it would be an all-out war and a close and highly competitive fight at Lightweight. Though Duran is considered by most to be the greatest Lightweight CHAMPION in history, this doesn't necessarily mean he was the greatest Lightweight FIGHTER in history. In my humble opinion, I don't see any fighter in history beating JCC on the night he beat Rosario for the Lightweight Championship of the World.
@SugarRayP4P Duran was not a Lightweight when he fought Hagler at Middleweight, let's be real.He was a middleweight. That'd be like calling Chavez a Bantamweight, where he began his career,or a Super Feather, where he won his first Champioship, when he beat Mayweather for the Jr.Welter Championship. But, Chavez wasnt a Bantam or a Superfeather when he fought Mayweather the second time for the Jr.Welter Championship,he was a Jr.Welter just like Mayweather.Your Duran statement with Hagler is illogical
@TheChoice264 No, Duran was a lightweight and Hagler was a full sized middleweight, Durans height/reach etc all his attributes were perfect for lightweight, not middleweight. But he went up through the weights and for a man of his size to go toe to toe with a beast like middleweight marvin hagler and go 15 ROUNDS!! Everyone with knowledge in the sport knows there is no fighter in the history of the sport who could take Duran out at lightweight. He was the perfect lightweight.
@SugarRayP4P I don't care what his attributes were perfect for, the fact of the matter is that when a man tips the scales at 160 lbs he is a middleweight-- period. Physical attributes have nothing to do with it. This is boxing. Contest's are not won on physical attributes. Anybody who know's boxing knows it's 90% mental-10% physical. Duran didnt fight Hagler weighing 135 lbs. THAT would be a lightweight fighting a middleweight.
@SugarRayP4P I,for one, never said anyone wouldv'e taken Duran "out". But, to say that no fighter in the history of the sport couldve taken him out at Lightweight isn't logical. Any man can be taken out by any man---period. The fact that a fighter with a fairly low KO% in Esteban DeJesus dropped Duran hard twice and BEAT him at Lightweight is all the proof I anyone needs to show that Duran could be had at Lightweight. Duran never faced the likes of a Chavez,Arguello,Ike Williams, etc at Light
Duran was one of the lightweight greats for sure but the idea that he was an unbeatable monster at 135lb isn't really true. The 135lb division was weak when Duran was champ - Dejesus was the only other real quality lightweight at the time and he gave Duran a lot of problems.
However, I think RD would have been too fast for JCC and too strong for Arguello. A prime Ike Williams on the other hand against a prime RD would have been too close to call.
@TheSmithDorian I agree. I'm a Duran fan as well, but many of his fans seem to think that he was this invincible beast at Lightweight but the truth of the matter is that he was beaten and dropped a couple times at Lightweight. I dont see Estban DeJesus dropping Chavez twice in seperate fights and beating him once. You make interesting points. I don't necessarily agree with you about RD being to fast for JC or too strong for AA, but it certainly is an interesting premise and tweaked my intellect.
@TheSmithDorian I'll have to think about those propositions and get back to you. Very interesting. Man you hit it right on the head with Ike Williams!! Funny you said that because I've always told people that Williams vs Duran wouldve been one of the greatest fights in history, possibly the greatest match-up that could ever be made at Lightweight. Ike is probably my all-time favorite Lightweight Champion. What a fucking fighter. He would absolutely DOMINATE and I mean DOMINATE todays "Champions"
Absolutely. Williams was like a scaled down version of Sugar Ray Robinson. I don't really see any weaknesses in him when he was at his peak. He was excellent technically but he could fight inside and brawl, he was tough, he was fast and he could really punch.
@SugarRayP4P So, in conclusion, though you feel Duran was "the perfect Lightweight", that does not necessarily mean he was the best Lightweight fighter. He could be beaten and he was at Lightweight. Again, in my opinion Julio Cesar Chavez reached his peak at Lightweight the night he challenged Rosario for the World Title. For me, I'll take THAT guy over any Lightweight in history. Just my opinion. I respect both fighters. JCC,Duran,Sanchez,Arguello,Jofre, are you kidding me? Love em ALL. Peace.
all of ya'll talkin shit about Taylor all I have to say is this. if taylor took the last 2 rounds off then he pretty much won the fight and ya'll wont be talkin
CHAVEZ WAS A FUCKEN FIGHTING MACHINE THAT NEVER GAVE UP AND KEPT IT GOING TILL HE KNOCK YOU THE FUCK OUT OF NO-WHERE WITH THAT REAL POWER HE WAS GENERATING ...LEGEND#1 BEST MEXICAN CHAMP THERE WILL EVER BE...
And they did. Taylor suffered from facial fractures and urinating blood. He could have been killed. How did chavez look after the fight?? ready to go out on a night on the town.
4:11 DAMN, WHAT IN THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH THIS NEGRITO, I hit him hard with one bonecrushing blow and in return I get suffercated with three and four punches!!!!! LMAO
@canibusnj tell em!!! Tell em!!! Show em that you are the only true minstrel on youtube!!! You don't need to respond!!! You are too good of a house negro to respond!!!! Keep up the good work you rootin tootin east coast oreo!!! It's jigaboo time!!!!!!
Taylors flurries did shit to Chavez, JC was just so damn tuff for Taylor, the poor guy was demolished in the end, feel sorry 4 him, and lets not talk about the rematch, Chavez owned him, and all the Taylor supporters go like "well son, Mel was past his prime" haha LOL so Taylor can be past his prime but Chavez cant, when Chavez fought Whitaker, Randall and De La Hoya he was past his prime but haters cant stand it, they want to bust his balls, what a crap, JC Chavez one of the all time greats
@catalinaguerrero That's right. He had to beat the life out of Meldrick and break him down for the victory. Chavez was an Aztec Warrior--purely vicious with no mercy given towards his opponents.
I believe this wouldve been the same outcome of a fight between prime Chavez and Ray Leonard in 140, Taylor was like a modern Leonard, well Taylor had better chin
@sly717 Ray Leonard would not have stupid enough to get into a brawling match with Chavez., listen to Leonard's comments at 3:15..Taylor stopped sticking with his strength and started fighting instead of boxing...Also if Chavez fought a young Sugar Ray Leonard as a Welterweight, Leonard would definitely win at least by decision...Meldrick Taylor had speed like Leonard but only a 66 reach..Leonard had a 74 reach, Chavez would never be able to get inside...
@apollo792 Leonard was the bigger man I give you that, but JC was extremly good at getting inside, he made every fight his fight, against Mayweather, Rosario and finally against Taylor. Prime Chavez vs prime Leonard at 140= great match, I go Chavez TKO
@apollo792 Remember that Leonard had a great deal of trouble against the hard-punching type (Duran) and I believe that in 140 Chavez was way more dangerous than Duran, better chin, heavier hands, better stamina, and the stalking he did, oh man that was relentless
@sly717 Ray would have handled him easily. Leonard was a natural welter and would be the bigger man. Leonard would have boxed him stayed outside and stung him with left jabs, right crosses, and would have landed that outstanding left hook (I always thought the left hook was Ray's best punch, it was textbook). Chavez had trouble against boxers (Whitaker, Randall). Chavez would not be the favorite of the judges, as he was many times. Leonard by a unanimous decision, and fairly comfortably.
@apollo792 To say anyone would've handled Chavez easily doesnt put a very good light on you as being a man with boxing knowledge, no offense. The fact that you even allude to his fights with Whitaker and Randall when he was past his prime in one and washed up in the other shines the same light on you as well. Your "Chavez judges favorite" also warrants no facts at all. You base your opinion on old man Chavez, not prime, AND the fact that JC fought all of one fight at Welter and didnt even weigh.
@sly717 Sugar Ray was an even better boxer, smarter and faster than Taylor was. Leonard is more of a natural at this weight and a little bigger and stronger than Chavez. Leonard was an outstanding boxer and Chavez a tough warrior with a good chin. Leonard's speed would have been the difference in this fight and I believe he would have stopped Chavez in the 9th round.
@sly717 Ray was naturally bigger and stronger and much faster than Julio. Ray would pick him off from the outside with jabs and right hands and would fight Chavez well on the inside also. Chavez was a relentless pressure fighter but he would've paid a hefty price trying to get to Ray's body. Chavez would not have broken Ray down like he did Meldrick Taylor in the late rounds of their 1st fight. Ray would have out boxed and out fought Chavez and stopped him late in the fight. ALL COPIED
@apollo792 Nah, prime Chavez was too strong for being stopped by ANYONE, not Leonard, not Duran, no one, in 135 or 140 no way, he was stopped only when he was washed up (De La Hoya, Tszyu) have you even watch prime JC Chavez fights? his very prime was the mid-late 80s,(against Rosario or Mayweather) prime JC was unstoppable, Mayweather was a great out fighter and didnt have a chance, if Duran beat Leonard, Chavez could too, in 140 prime to prime Chavez was even more dangerous than Duran
@apollo792 JC challenged Macho Camacho again in the mid 90s (1996 after Mexican IRS took like 10 mill from him) JC was way past his prime and his career was downhill, he needed another high-profile bout to earn big money, Camacho didnt even respond to the challenge, instead, Camacho fought Ray, the thing is that Camacho prefered to fight Leonard than Chavez, that is because Camacho already knew how hard JC used to hit, and how dangerous he was
@apollo792 It's unrealistic to even compare these fighters head to head. Leonard in his prime was a natural welterweight. Chavez in his prime was a Superfeather, Light, and Superlight(ending after the Taylor fight in '90). Leonard in his prime could never have made weight at Super Lightweight because if anything he was on the big side of being a Welterweight. This fight couldv'e never taken place in their primes. But still, it's a joke that you'd say Leonard would stop Chavez, much less in 9!!
Damn Chavez was great, he doesnt rush, doesnt waste any energy or punches, stalking, every punch he throws, hurts. He destroyed Taylor. The perfect seek and destroy fighter, poor Taylor. I guess this wouldve been the same outcome of a fight between prime Julio Cesar Chavez and prime Sugar Ray Leonard at 140
Steele did exactly the right thing in stopping the fight. Taylor was utterly spent..... maybe even the corner should have got him out of there after the 11th?
Imagine being just mere feet away from Chavez and Taylor, and hearing the devastating shots Chavez would land.
Yes, Taylor was landing about 3 shots for every 1 shot Chavez would land, and he was doing so with amazing combos--I can see that. However, Taylor's 3 punches are like getting hit three times by a hammer that's about 2 inches away from your chin, unlike Chavez's single devastating shots that are like getting hit by a baseball bat that's 4 feet away from starting point. Think about it..
There were two seconds left you bleeping moron!!! W/o a dount the worst call by a ref in the hystory of boxing. Richard Steele pocket was bigger after this fight...
@CEO1451 If you were such a "fan" why twist so many hairs so many years later after such a resounding beating that Taylor took? It's because you like so many then and now can never comprehend how a slower, older, hispanic fighter could so methodically take apart the faster, younger, black opponent. You sitting there trying to label yourself pro-chavez would be like me saying I like Joe Frazier alot, but I thought his win over Ali was a fluke.
@CEO1451 OK you have unearthed the lost component to this "ultimate travesty": crazy italian managers. Without that, shit Don King and Steele would never have pulled it off! Delusional whiners like you try to blame the stoppage on anything, but the hardest of evidence is impossible to ignore. All Steele did was spare a decimated and broken down fighter who had no idea how to respond to a ref's prompts. Chavez haters will forever cling to thier excuses.
dude are you like blind or just stupid? didnt you see the hands of taylor holding on the ropes? he was practically leaning on em, i repeat, he managed to pull himself up but he didnt respond to the questions, he didnt touch the gloves with the referee and was leaning on the ropes, wtf? so now because the poor guy "fought his heart out" we must ignore the rules of boxing, my ass! Chavez KOed him, PERIOD
Oh my God another prick playing the Don King card!! dude wake up and smell the blood in Taylors pee, HE WAS HOLDING ON THE ROPES, check the vid closely, both of his hands were on the ropes, he pulled himself up but he was KOed, it happens all the time, cut it out with the conspiracy theories, Chavez KOed Taylor not Don King not Steele, CHAVEZ if Taylor didnt hit da floor he would have won, they didnt go to de decision and robbed him, he got KOed, drop the denial

SerUresto 4 months ago
@SerUresto - - thats my argument with leonard V hagler , do 4 or 5 flashy pitty pat shots cancel out 2 crushing punches ? people romanticize the taylor v chavez fight - but when you focus on chavez' punches and not just taylors speed you see the damage he was inflicting.
did steele make the right call ? - hell yeah.
could taylor have finished the fight ? - hell yeah .

My dream matchup would of been Chavez vs Aaron Pryor what a fight!

tono3022 5 months ago

As sad as this stoppage was, the ref had a point. Taylor was destroying Chavez as far as boxing goes. He really was landing at least 2 to 1, but Chavez's shots looked like they hurt sooooo much more.

But, who do you think wouldve won had they met in Armstrong's prime? Viewing SRR's fights with LaMotta, I'd have to go with SRR(and no I'm not comparing Armstrong to LaMotta).
TheChoice264 7 months ago
@TheChoice264 "@canibusnj "I would like to see Chavez stand and fight Sugar Ray Robinson or Henry Armstrong!!"--Canib. Me too bro. Me too!!!!! " << you guys are nuts. I hope this is some sort of mistake and you mean Sugar Ray Leonard, not Robinson. Robinson was a middleweight (possibly greatest MW of all time). How is JCC gonna fight a REAL MW and stnad any sort of chance?! You MUST be thinking SRL or you're crazy.
k4n31985 5 months ago
@k4n31985 No, I can't speak for Canib, but as for myself, of course I know that Chavez couldnt have fought Robinson. Robinson started his professional career as a welterweight, and is, in my opinion, the greatest welterweight in history. Chavez began his pro career,at age 16, as a bantamweight. Chavez won his first title as a superfeather. Robinson eventually grew into a middleweight. JC eventually grew into a Jr.Welter. JC only fought as a welter once(Whitaker), and was 3 lbs under the limit.
TheChoice264 5 months ago
@TheChoice264 I know all this, but SRR imo excelled as MW, not so much as WW (even though he was still great). I'm not really a fan of p4p matchups, as it's too unrealistic to really compare speed (which is a huge factor). You can somewhat compare p4p power, but speed not so much, and not even chin, really.
k4n31985 5 months ago
@TheChoice264 Robinson started off as a lightweight.
dalastdon1432 4 months ago

Ninjikayatsu 11 months ago
Chavez was the best! I don't see why the clock should have been ignored and Taylor get the win. I was hoping Taylor would win this fight, but, Chavez won this fair and square.
949galaxy 11 months ago
@juiceeddieshow222 So let me get this correct...Hearns, Duran, and Hagler wasn't dangerous opponents for Leonard??? Marco Antonio Barrera, Corralas, Mosley, De La Hoya wasnt dangerous for Mayweather??? Yeah sure...Hell, if Mayweather would've fought Marquez at 135, it would've been a more competitive fight. By the way, Taylor won this fight, period....
japan817 11 months ago
@japan817 Even if Taylor won the fight by points, he would have never been the same. Chavez nearly sent him to his grave, and now Taylor's brain dead because of Chavez's unbelievably powerful punches. Personally, I think if you beat your opponent so decisively to the point where you nearly kill them then that's a victory. Taylor's punches were like slaps to Chavez, and even Chavez's face only had a little scratch between his eyebrows. Imagine if this fight took place in 1988 with 15 rounds @_@
Ninjikayatsu 11 months ago
Only reason Chavez got more shots in into the latest rounds is because taylors eyes were shut ;-) If taylor had fought more wisely he would have won this fight but Chavez had a good comeback and a strong will to come back after a boxing lesson

Peace.
SugarRayP4P 9 months ago
@SugarRayP4P Not true. I'm a big fan of both fighters and am completely unbiased. I think it would be an all-out war and a close and highly competitive fight at Lightweight. Though Duran is considered by most to be the greatest Lightweight CHAMPION in history, this doesn't necessarily mean he was the greatest Lightweight FIGHTER in history. In my humble opinion, I don't see any fighter in history beating JCC on the night he beat Rosario for the Lightweight Championship of the World.
TheChoice264 9 months ago
@SugarRayP4P Duran was not a Lightweight when he fought Hagler at Middleweight, let's be real.He was a middleweight. That'd be like calling Chavez a Bantamweight, where he began his career,or a Super Feather, where he won his first Champioship, when he beat Mayweather for the Jr.Welter Championship. But, Chavez wasnt a Bantam or a Superfeather when he fought Mayweather the second time for the Jr.Welter Championship,he was a Jr.Welter just like Mayweather.Your Duran statement with Hagler is illogical
TheChoice264 9 months ago
@TheChoice264 No, Duran was a lightweight and Hagler was a full sized middleweight, Durans height/reach etc all his attributes were perfect for lightweight, not middleweight. But he went up through the weights and for a man of his size to go toe to toe with a beast like middleweight marvin hagler and go 15 ROUNDS!! Everyone with knowledge in the sport knows there is no fighter in the history of the sport who could take Duran out at lightweight. He was the perfect lightweight.
SugarRayP4P 9 months ago
@SugarRayP4P I don't care what his attributes were perfect for, the fact of the matter is that when a man tips the scales at 160 lbs he is a middleweight-- period. Physical attributes have nothing to do with it. This is boxing. Contest's are not won on physical attributes. Anybody who know's boxing knows it's 90% mental-10% physical. Duran didnt fight Hagler weighing 135 lbs. THAT would be a lightweight fighting a middleweight.
TheChoice264 9 months ago
@SugarRayP4P I,for one, never said anyone wouldv'e taken Duran "out". But, to say that no fighter in the history of the sport couldve taken him out at Lightweight isn't logical. Any man can be taken out by any man---period. The fact that a fighter with a fairly low KO% in Esteban DeJesus dropped Duran hard twice and BEAT him at Lightweight is all the proof I anyone needs to show that Duran could be had at Lightweight. Duran never faced the likes of a Chavez,Arguello,Ike Williams, etc at Light
TheChoice264 9 months ago
@TheChoice264
TheSmithDorian 7 months ago
@TheSmithDorian I agree. I'm a Duran fan as well, but many of his fans seem to think that he was this invincible beast at Lightweight but the truth of the matter is that he was beaten and dropped a couple times at Lightweight. I dont see Estban DeJesus dropping Chavez twice in seperate fights and beating him once. You make interesting points. I don't necessarily agree with you about RD being to fast for JC or too strong for AA, but it certainly is an interesting premise and tweaked my intellect.
TheChoice264 7 months ago
@TheSmithDorian I'll have to think about those propositions and get back to you. Very interesting. Man you hit it right on the head with Ike Williams!! Funny you said that because I've always told people that Williams vs Duran wouldve been one of the greatest fights in history, possibly the greatest match-up that could ever be made at Lightweight. Ike is probably my all-time favorite Lightweight Champion. What a fucking fighter. He would absolutely DOMINATE and I mean DOMINATE todays "Champions"
TheChoice264 7 months ago
@TheChoice264
Absolutely. Williams was like a scaled down version of Sugar Ray Robinson. I don't really see any weaknesses in him when he was at his peak. He was excellent technically but he could fight inside and brawl, he was tough, he was fast and he could really punch.
TheSmithDorian 7 months ago
@SugarRayP4P So, in conclusion, though you feel Duran was "the perfect Lightweight", that does not necessarily mean he was the best Lightweight fighter. He could be beaten and he was at Lightweight. Again, in my opinion Julio Cesar Chavez reached his peak at Lightweight the night he challenged Rosario for the World Title. For me, I'll take THAT guy over any Lightweight in history. Just my opinion. I respect both fighters. JCC,Duran,Sanchez,Arguello,Jofre, are you kidding me? Love em ALL. Peace.
TheChoice264 9 months ago
@zeuslives11 i dont see anybody beating duran at lightweight.

Ninjikayatsu 1 year ago
I believe this wouldve been the same outcome of a fight between prime Chavez and Ray Leonard in 140, Taylor was like a modern Leonard, well Taylor had better chin
sly717 1 year ago
@sly717 Ray Leonard would not have stupid enough to get into a brawling match with Chavez., listen to Leonard's comments at 3:15..Taylor stopped sticking with his strength and started fighting instead of boxing...Also if Chavez fought a young Sugar Ray Leonard as a Welterweight, Leonard would definitely win at least by decision...Meldrick Taylor had speed like Leonard but only a 66 reach..Leonard had a 74 reach, Chavez would never be able to get inside...
apollo792 1 year ago
@apollo792 Leonard was the bigger man I give you that, but JC was extremly good at getting inside, he made every fight his fight, against Mayweather, Rosario and finally against Taylor. Prime Chavez vs prime Leonard at 140= great match, I go Chavez TKO
sly717 1 year ago
@sly717 Chavez TKO??? You wouldn't bet your life on that would you??
apollo792 1 year ago
@apollo792 Remember that Leonard had a great deal of trouble against the hard-punching type (Duran) and I believe that in 140 Chavez was way more dangerous than Duran, better chin, heavier hands, better stamina, and the stalking he did, oh man that was relentless
sly717 1 year ago
@sly717 Ray would have handled him easily. Leonard was a natural welter and would be the bigger man. Leonard would have boxed him stayed outside and stung him with left jabs, right crosses, and would have landed that outstanding left hook (I always thought the left hook was Ray's best punch, it was textbook). Chavez had trouble against boxers (Whitaker, Randall). Chavez would not be the favorite of the judges, as he was many times. Leonard by a unanimous decision, and fairly comfortably.
apollo792 1 year ago
@apollo792 To say anyone would've handled Chavez easily doesnt put a very good light on you as being a man with boxing knowledge, no offense. The fact that you even allude to his fights with Whitaker and Randall when he was past his prime in one and washed up in the other shines the same light on you as well. Your "Chavez judges favorite" also warrants no facts at all. You base your opinion on old man Chavez, not prime, AND the fact that JC fought all of one fight at Welter and didnt even weigh.
TheChoice264 11 months ago
@sly717 Sugar Ray was an even better boxer, smarter and faster than Taylor was. Leonard is more of a natural at this weight and a little bigger and stronger than Chavez. Leonard was an outstanding boxer and Chavez a tough warrior with a good chin. Leonard's speed would have been the difference in this fight and I believe he would have stopped Chavez in the 9th round.
COPIED FROM A WELL SAID WEBPAGE
apollo792 1 year ago

Richard Steele pocket was bigger after this fight...
chifuli1974 1 year ago
@CEO1451 If you were such a "fan" why twist so many hairs so many years later after such a resounding beating that Taylor took? It's because you like so many then and now can never comprehend how a slower, older, hispanic fighter could so methodically take apart the faster, younger, black opponent. You sitting there trying to label yourself pro-chavez would be like me saying I like Joe Frazier alot, but I thought his win over Ali was a fluke.
devillock449 1 year ago

@CEO1451
