Hi, I have a question, i hope you can help me. I want to connect my new apple tv to my tv, the problem is that my HDTV doesn't have HDMI just VGA, you think I could use the (HDMI HDTV to VGA HD15 Y/Pb/Pr 3 RCA Adapter Cable? )
Thanks for a very informative video. has gone some way to explaining why the HDMI sockets on ny Sony Bravia do not work and why the HDMI to component cable I bought is absolutely useless.
@tylertfs123@tylertfs123 there's a great chart on Wikipedia that can help you out with the exact bandwidth capability difference. We can't leave links but you can find it at that site slash wiki slash HDMI, and it will show you the differences in terms of 3D over HDMI, Ethernet channel, Audio Return Channel, and 4k x 2K resolution support. Hope that helps!
Hdmi cables have a much more sopistiicated video encoding than component video. HDMI uses a video encoding called "Transition Minimized Differential Signaling", by which it transmit all of the video information with digital transmission; without any loss or interference of video transmission. VGA is similar to HDMI, but it uses digital to analog transmission. The big difference between component and HDMI is that component does not synctronize the horizontal and vertical scan lines like VGA,HDMI.
@zFuZioNAimbot Lmao ur probably a fuckin 8 year old cussin for the first time. y u trolling on this informational video bitch. ur a fukin asswipe you cumnut.
I have a new Dell XPS17 that has an HDMI output. I want to output from that HTMI to a pair of video glasses I've just bought (Prober EV920G). The vid glasses have the following adaptor cables: VGA male (no good, as the laptop doesn't have a VGA output), Standard A/V RCA composite (no good, as it's analogue), PSP 3.5mm male (whatever that is), AV 3.5 male, and Video 3.5mm male. Also my Galaxy S2 video out jack does not run the glasses on any of those. Can you salvage anything out of all this? =)
Actually HDMI isn't bad either.Thing is,component cables suffer from a bit of rate lag,and for me,that hurts my eyes.HDMI doesn't really have that problem.I'm saying HDMI is better,I'm saying I prefer HDMI.

@LFCTraynor Continuing that comment. Analog, just takes the signal and transfers it as electronic 'pulses', so it does not change the video or whatever signal. So yeah...
@LFCTraynor Digital just means that the signals were broken down into several 'binary codes'. I.e., an image may be sent to the TV like 1988300099120hhy812fd7gd7wy8xh8yhj2i9j and it's the TV's job to recognize the codes and display it as a picture. The best part about digital, is that it actually knows what the picture is supposed to look when it reaches the TV or whatever device, so that means crystal sound/picture even over low quality (such as 480i).
ok, im kind of a noob when it comes to modern system technologies, so someone please tell me: do you have to have an HD tv to play a PS3, or can you get the old red, yellow, and white cables to go with it?
@Astrithor Yes, when i bought ps3 it actually only came with component cables. I had to buy HDMI. Either way if you have the right cable you can hook ps3 to both HDMI and regular tv.
@TheofficialSonic1 He is incorrect, component is analog, which means it tranfers THE EXACT SIGNAL that comes from the device. Whereas digital may change the colors (sometimes in a good way).
I think the devices work digitally and a converter changes the internal digital signal to analog for analog connections (Component, S Video etc) but HDMI maintains the digital picture from the device to the television.

Hello Jules, I'm not sure what your point is? In my video, I said that component video supports 720 p (progressive) or 1080i (interlaced). Component video doesn't support 1080p; you must use HDMI to carry a 1080p signal (HDMI will also carry a 720p signal). In addition, HDMI will carry the high-res audio formats exclusive to Blu-ray discs (Dolby TruHD, etc). Component video does not support those audio formats. A.L. at Axiom Home Theaters.

Hi TY, If your PS3 system has an HDMI output jack and your HD 50-inch flat screen has an HDMI input, then use them, and the image should be excellent and in HD. Or, if your PS3 system has just component video outputs (three RCA jacks usually color-coded red, green and blue), then use the component-video connections. You won't get HD rez if you don't use either HDMI or component-video connections
I have a Slim PS3 160GB system & a 50" HD 1080p w/ 600Hz flat tv and I do not use HDMI nor a component. When I look at the images, it looks horrible! it is displayed as 480i! my Sony Bravia is 720 resolution. is it better to use the Component for HD or the HDMI? because when i watch blu-rays and plays games, i notice the picture have a very noticeable shadow whenever the picture is moving. Im not sure if its the TV or the ps3 or the settings but that's how it is. other people seems to not realize or notice until i bring it up, and even when i do, it does not seem to bother them, but it bothers ME. It is my first 720 TV, the rest are 1080, so maybe this is why, idk...
ok i got a 26'' lg tv and i plan on using it for my xbox. However i have the xbox Arcade so i dont have a hdmi port. Would it be worth it to upgrade my console and get an elite so i have a hdmi port or should i just stick with the component
Is your cable box an HD model ? If your cable box does not offer an HDMI output jack it is most likely not one. Upgrading to an HD cable box model will increase the resolution of the video signal going to your HD TV (from 480i to 720p or 1080i). Your will benefit from a better picture if your Philips TV is an HD model capable to display the higher resolution 1080i or/and 720p.
I have a component cable box for my HDTV. Should I go through the trouble of trading it in for a HDMI box to try and get a better picture? I have a Philips 42" tv.

@IAmCjcj11 - Yes you can use a high grade component video cable which will carry a HD signal in analog directly to the TV or via an A/v receiver's video inputs and outputs.
does this means that you can not watch pirate copies on your blue ray player, or did hackers found ways to bypass this 1.3 compliant restriction that this guy was talking about?
@AxiomHomeTheaters please help me, so i bought an VGA to Component because i wanted to connect my laptop to my tv but since my tv doesnt have an VGA port i bought the VGA to component. no i connect them and i get a messed up background. colours are not right. Sort of green balk (is that english?) on the right side of my tv. Please, what should i do? >> picture of tv when connected to laptop >> w w w(dot) img402(dot)imageshack(dot)us/i/20110107214319.jpg/
@MrMortjon The VGA to component cable does not seperate colors well, it really only delivers the signal. It is best to utilize a RGB to component converter box that can perform the seperate colour conversions for the different resolutions in order to provide optimum colour fidelity.
I'm not sure if he made no sense with the piracy and 1080p thing or if i'm just too dumb to get it. I'm probably just too dumb. I'll go hack my video game consoles to do whatever the hell i want them to do now. Lol. O.O
@ninjapie117 - HDMI carries pure digital signal while component is analogue. @nijapie: HDMI provides a more exact image while component tends to hide some artifacts however both are so good it likely you will not tell a difference. If the cable runs a very long, 12 feet or more, opt for the component.
Mr. Lofft you are amazing. A lot of what you said just confirmed what I already understood but I wasn't aware of the 1.3 compliance. This is a great video for anyone interested in understanding why they need different input cables. Will be sharing when needed! Ty
ok my hdtv has component inputs n a dvi input if i get hdmi to dvi converter is that better then component cables? by the way this is so i can connect my ps3 to the tv im just try to get the best pic oh n by the way im not worryed about audio i have a fiber optic cable connected to a home theater receiver Thxs again
@supa1995mustanggt If you play a Blu-ray disc on your PS3 it cam output a video signal with a resolution up to 1080p. If your TV has a native resolution of 1080p then it would be worthwhile to use an adaptor from HDMI to DVI on your TV. But I doubt that your TV can output 1080p if it doesn't offer an HDMI input. HD Satellite & Cable TV receivers will output a video signal with a maxresolution of 780p or 1080i. Your component cables have the capability to carry a video resolution up to 7
component video can carry up to 1080i true?...my rear projection tv has 1080i signal through component video input...check the manual "Panasonic 47" TX-47P800H"
@ChurBurras an array of component video cables will pass a video signal only (no audio signal) with a maximum resolution of 1080i. However, it cannot carry 1080P from a Blu-ray disc.
And now here i comes the New Quad Full HD video quality by the way!
HDMI just for FullHd tvs, in HDTV the pixels is looklike embaressing and bad positioning, "depends on HDMI cable"... I stay with componente because my tv don't have HDMI support :P" xDDD Great vid bro!
I still very much prefer component video with a digital fiber optic Audio beside it because even though they are older 720p is a lower resolution but also uses less work to run and sometimes has deeper colors especially 720p plasma screens
@popheykikker YES i Have my XBOX 360 in format HD with 1080i, because of the tv but if u have a full HD TV (1080p) u can use ur DVD players or blu ray players or whatever u want to connect.
Question: I have a panasonic FULL HD (1080p) camcorder and was just wandering if there is a difference between hdmi and component output when the camcorder is hooked up to the TV. The camcorder came with a component output i really dont feel like going out and bying an hdmi cable. help is appreciated :)
@tapiaalex62 yes it does, sorry, that is not what I had meant to type. what I meant to say is it does not support 1080p as he says. Only HDMI and DVI do that.
I have a question. my Xbox 360 is hooked up via component cables to my HD LCD monitor and it is capable, according to my XBox, of 1080p signals (when I had it on an older HD TV it was only capable of 1080i with 1080p grayed out) so was the cable always capable of this and the receiver just wasn't?
I hope HDMI replace DVI because Im having a feeling that my old video card burn out because of being connected through DVI so now I got a new graphic card with HDMI so I have that sucker connected to my HDTV with my consoles also.
most of the people i know who look your age wouldn't have the slightest idea what your talking about. i like you, cause your not like other old people, you actually know stuff.
i much prefer DVI that what most computer gamers use on monitors. it is the best for picture quality and i have my surround sound plugged straight into the back of my computer. DVI ftw
I tried using the red, green. blue, component connector on my standard dvd player and all i get is blue colors on the lcd display. Works fine with the yellow component connector hooked up any suggestions, and explainations of why also this dvd does not have hdmi out. Thanks Video was informative.
It's kinda funny how terms like "RGB" "component", "analog and Digital video" are in everybodys mouth nowadays, for me it is normal and I'm used to, and also for those who are in the world of videogames from several years.
The component cable itself comprises of three cables R,G and B. These three cables only carry video. However when component is used with RCA or Phono it can then "carry audio" as such,
this is kinda bull. Component HD cable CAN carry a full 1080p signal. it's just analogue rather than digital. tbh Component is perfectly good enough the majority of the time.maybe if you're using huge ass plasma or LED TVs hdmi would be better, otherwise i see no serious benefit over component.
probably jus some marketing bull to try an make more money out of you. otherwise, it may be that hdmi is needed for 1080p broadcasts and dvds etc, all i know is my 360 console gives me the 1080p option with my component cable connected.
@j800r While this is true, the guy was talking mostly about blu-rays and ps3s. He stated that 1080p was blocked on the component for piracy issues (although you can get 1080i/720p). 1080p is available on component, he just kind of didn't mention that.
@j800r The benfit of HDMI over component video is that the latest surround formats such as dolby True HD and DTS Master audio can be streamed thrugh HDMI. Component video can carry 1080p analog video as of late, but only for games. Because of the protecytion circuits you only get 1080i in BlueRays. But you have to use digital optical or Coaxial digital that can't do DTS MA or Dolby True HD. So if you aren't interested in the latest surround sound technolgy, component video is okay.
Yeah there is a small difference between the two because hdmi cables are highly sophisticated pieces of tech, wheras the component cable has multiple cables to display the picture (and audio in some cases) and is more older than the hdmi but it can handle displaying resolutions of up to 1080i, to conclude, component is a good cable but hdmi is only a little more detailed and it saves space but at the end of the day the choice is yours, hope that helped :)
not sure about you but last night I plugged my xbox into my dads new hd ready 32 inch tv with component cables and it could view 1080p... not sure how but I bet it would overheat quickly
@slipknotnz That is because sony owns blu-ray. 1080p is blocked off in component on blu-ray players and ps3's for piracy issues. Your xbox will probably not overheat, it was made to display that resolution (hd-dvds).
i started off with the cables that came with my xbox 360 to my hd flat screen tv 32 inch and it was great and all until i got an hdmi cable and made the picture quality better and it even calibrated the picture to its right angle and i didn't have to do a thing!

@AxiomHomeTheaters if you dont use an hdmi you can still use the component cable to 720p or 1080i
IAmCjcj11 10 months ago
@IAmCjcj11 - Yes you can use a high grade component video cable which will carry a HD signal in analog directly to the TV or via an A/v receiver's video inputs and outputs.

MrMortjon 1 year ago
@MrMortjon The VGA to component cable does not seperate colors well, it really only delivers the signal. It is best to utilize a RGB to component converter box that can perform the seperate colour conversions for the different resolutions in order to provide optimum colour fidelity.

Just try them both, and go with the one you think looks best. Job done.

I'm not sure if he made no sense with the piracy and 1080p thing or if i'm just too dumb to get it. I'm probably just too dumb. I'll go hack my video game consoles to do whatever the hell i want them to do now. Lol. O.O

So does it really make a difference if I use HDMI for my xbox instead of HD components?
ninjapie117 1 year ago
@ninjapie117 - HDMI carries pure digital signal while component is analogue. @nijapie: HDMI provides a more exact image while component tends to hide some artifacts however both are so good it likely you will not tell a difference. If the cable runs a very long, 12 feet or more, opt for the component.
AxiomHomeTheaters 1 year ago
Mr. Lofft you are amazing. A lot of what you said just confirmed what I already understood but I wasn't aware of the 1.3 compliance. This is a great video for anyone interested in understanding why they need different input cables. Will be sharing when needed! Ty

supa1995mustanggt 1 year ago
@supa1995mustanggt If you play a Blu-ray disc on your PS3 it cam output a video signal with a resolution up to 1080p. If your TV has a native resolution of 1080p then it would be worthwhile to use an adaptor from HDMI to DVI on your TV. But I doubt that your TV can output 1080p if it doesn't offer an HDMI input. HD Satellite & Cable TV receivers will output a video signal with a maxresolution of 780p or 1080i. Your component cables have the capability to carry a video resolution up to 7

@ChurBurras an array of component video cables will pass a video signal only (no audio signal) with a maximum resolution of 1080i. However, it cannot carry 1080P from a Blu-ray disc.

From what I understand, most PS3 games are only 720p anyway.
If your watching Blu-ray movies then it's a bit of bummer.

Actually component can carry audio if it's a component cable for a video game console, such as the PS3,Xbox 360,or Wii.
JAREDMICHALLE 1 year ago
The component cable itself comprises of three cables R,G and B. These three cables only carry video. However when component is used with RCA or Phono it can then "carry audio" as such,

this is kinda bull. Component HD cable CAN carry a full 1080p signal. it's just analogue rather than digital. tbh Component is perfectly good enough the majority of the time.maybe if you're using huge ass plasma or LED TVs hdmi would be better, otherwise i see no serious benefit over component.
j800r 2 years ago 4
Thats kinda weird cause when I ask the guys at best buy what tv's can handle 1080p via component they tell me that it is flat out impossible.
SevBodea720 2 years ago
probably jus some marketing bull to try an make more money out of you. otherwise, it may be that hdmi is needed for 1080p broadcasts and dvds etc, all i know is my 360 console gives me the 1080p option with my component cable connected.
j800r 2 years ago
@j800r While this is true, the guy was talking mostly about blu-rays and ps3s. He stated that 1080p was blocked on the component for piracy issues (although you can get 1080i/720p). 1080p is available on component, he just kind of didn't mention that.
TheNileblack 1 year ago
Sony makes a component cable for ps3 that supports 1080p. It was $35 at a Wal--Mart yesterday.
CardinalsFan8806 1 year ago
@j800r The benfit of HDMI over component video is that the latest surround formats such as dolby True HD and DTS Master audio can be streamed thrugh HDMI. Component video can carry 1080p analog video as of late, but only for games. Because of the protecytion circuits you only get 1080i in BlueRays. But you have to use digital optical or Coaxial digital that can't do DTS MA or Dolby True HD. So if you aren't interested in the latest surround sound technolgy, component video is okay.
VerbalBlitzkrieg 1 year ago
Would hdmi make a difference on a 720p lcd tv rather from component?
thereaper15999 2 years ago
@thereaper15999
Yeah there is a small difference between the two because hdmi cables are highly sophisticated pieces of tech, wheras the component cable has multiple cables to display the picture (and audio in some cases) and is more older than the hdmi but it can handle displaying resolutions of up to 1080i, to conclude, component is a good cable but hdmi is only a little more detailed and it saves space but at the end of the day the choice is yours, hope that helped :)
ubuntufighter 2 years ago
@thereaper15999 no
if you want 1080p, the only option is hdmi

not sure about you but last night I plugged my xbox into my dads new hd ready 32 inch tv with component cables and it could view 1080p... not sure how but I bet it would overheat quickly
slipknotnz 1 year ago
@slipknotnz That is because sony owns blu-ray. 1080p is blocked off in component on blu-ray players and ps3's for piracy issues. Your xbox will probably not overheat, it was made to display that resolution (hd-dvds).
TheNileblack 1 year ago
i started off with the cables that came with my xbox 360 to my hd flat screen tv 32 inch and it was great and all until i got an hdmi cable and made the picture quality better and it even calibrated the picture to its right angle and i didn't have to do a thing!
