  • I think it's 12/8, he just fools you with the snare timing

  • The time sig is awesome/slick played with a few polyrythimic inserts of sex

  • It's 6/8..

  • 12/8

  • So many drummers candy sugar hype way out about all this speed but fail to embrace real drumming. This is a perfect example of someone who knows how to play but more importantly, how to play for the song.

  • what is that symbol on the right that he uses that sorta sounds like a closed hi hat

  • @dantheman1028 a closed hi hat :/

  • @dantheman1028 it is a closed hat. It's on what's called an x hat stand I believe. Don't think he has a foot pedal for it. It might also just be a remote hat.

  • I got my picture with him yesterday. Good fun.

  • This is Funk!!!

  • love the lope in the bass notes at :24-:25

  • My drum teacher is friends with this guy :D!!!!!!!!!

  • 6/8?

  • @Zaul2410 6/4, I think, when it starts funky. . .

  • @woodie62 Its in 4/4 and played in triplets.

  • @CaptNIPPY

    I'm pretty sure it's 6/8

  • More funk than a white man aught to have!! Kidding...Garibaldi is my drum hero.

  • @playdrums He's one of Dennis Chambers' early inspirations. . .and mine too!! I love this groove. . . . .

  • simple The Best Of The funk Beat!!!

  • this man is classic. i still remember working thru his book of permeatation studies in college.

  • he's a funk machine... his groove is on a whole other level

  • fuckin orgasm backbeat makin me come bro..........

  • This is in a book called "The Code of Funk" where you can play along to the TOP songs without the drums on there. The charts are pretty descriptive even including a lot of the fills and stuff on there too. Check it out sometime, it's a chops buster!

  • i thought he messed up at :38...but he actually just changed the times signatures, silly me garibaldi doesnt mess up lol

  • @drum6banger

time signature didn't change - he just plays the snare a triplet 16th later

  • @silveretto he actually hit the bass a triplet 16th earlier if you listen close enough

  • @LennyAndMike you're also refering to :38, right? I Don't hear a change in time signature - but that may be me :)

  • @silveretto no i didn't hear one either but he hits the bass a triplet 16th earlier than normal 2 times in a row after the chorus

  • @LennyAndMike er 2 phrases in a row i meant

  • i love how when he plays drums, the look on his face is just like

i dont need anything to survive, i could kill you with my perfect technique

  • Looks like he's alternating hits on his HiHat/Ride/Cowbell and snare with the sticking on the 3/4-part RLRR LRLR RLRL and on the 12/8-part it's just RLR LRL.. Am I right?

  • Yeah... It's the base of his technics ...

Search a book called "Future Sounds" by David Garibaldi, you can see this staff in Single and double paradiddle.

  • Duh he has skills. Best Funk drummer ever!

  • It's in 12/8 and 3/4 time, sick...

  • @bobindersmiff .... its 6/8

  • I'm truley impressed, without a dought this guy has skills!

  • LEGEND!!!!!!!

  • I love his signature sticks

  • This video is very illustrative. When it comes down to it, drumming is simply a job that requires a hell-of-a-lot-of concentration and the ability to be 'johnny-on-the-spot'.

  • @bodgaard Dave's technicality to me explains why he has one mother angry drumming face

  • @bodgaard

That neatly sums it all up.

  • just like oak custom.cause birch custom hoop is alumi diecast.but, this is dyna hoop.maybe finish is honey york amber.

  • anyone know what kit this is?

  • I believe it is a Yamaha Birch Custom Absolute kit. He tends to either use that or the Yamaha 9000 Recording Kit however looking at the lugs its most likely the birch custom kit (yes I know I am geeky!)

  • I have a Yamaha Oak Custom, and it Looks EXACTLY like this.. but more than that i don't know.

  • you can be he has his custom snare cracking.

  • Wow, hasn't anyone ever heard of linear drumming before? Garibaldi is a genius.

  • He is amazing.. not to back up hetlund but he does seem to be losing some time ... especially in the beggining...thinking about it in the first 1:30 minutes... Great work...thumbs up

  • Exercise 35 pag 112 hahah

  • Ohhh Loko

    Video MutiO massa

  • He's not a technical beast or anything like that. It's just that it sounds so clean, you can he play even the smallest ghost note with maximum precision and he's the tightest drummer I've ever heard - Did he ever mis a note?

Don't know about you guys, but my "David Garibaldi sees you"-note will always remain on the wall beside my drum kit. :P

  • he actually ticked at 1:07 or so. but still, hes flawless.

  • yup

  • Hetlund72,

    You have two options...

See your ear Dr. right away.

Post your video showing how this should be played.

  • You are either not a drummer, or just someone who thinks their better than every one else.

  • Hetlund72 is an IDIOT!

  • im thinking of playing this for an audition to get into a performing arts uni, do you think its a good idea.....would love to hear suggestions for other songs that will make a good impression....cheers

  • love david. love tower of power, but some parts dave sounds alittle off, especially on the cowbell groove

  • Personally, I think this is a great performance from Dave! I've seen a lot of players try and play this tune... I've even had a go myself! From experience, I can tell you, it's a tough one to nail down!

  • No ....The perspective of the recording is bad. Really crappy raw mic recording, horrible levels and balance,

Not DG's perfomance, He's dead on - even the cow bell part. You can't hear the counter parts.

You're hearing the drums unmixed against an audio recording coming from elsewhere in the room. It's the equivalent of standing behind the band. When you walk out front and finally hear" the mix " you hear things in context and it makes sense.

DG Funky, very Funky, he don't miss.

  • yeah plus, I feel like if you don't really understand what you're listening to, a lot of david garibaldi's playing might sound "off." his style is kind of ridiculous.

  • I'm assuming that you mean ridiculous as in "off the hook"???

but your point is well made nonetheless, unless you know what you are listening to and for, it can confuse the non-initiated, just like certain jazz idioms. Things can be wasted on people who aren't into it.

  • I think by ridiculous he means syncopated...and yes it's very syncopated. Which is why it's so funky and unique, and why so many players wish they were him haha. My teacher gave me this groove a while ago, it's a damn fun one to play!

  • YEAH BOI!!!!

  • Best funk/soul drummer to ever live

  • one of the best!!

  • exactly on 0:25-0:26 does he straighten the bass drum pattern on purpose or does he mess up? i think he messes up

  • I think I messed up, he filled with another snare hit. That just my opinion tho.

  • So?

  • yeah, your right man, he still is a badass drummer. :)

  • Everything he played was deliberate. This is highly syncopated drumming.

  • He plays an extra beat on purpose.

  • so true...David is one the cleanest drummers ever!!

  • yep he's really good with coming up with those snare/hihat patterns.

  • Bump all the Beef!Do ya'll see this Dang Pocket?

  • Travis sucks all he does is beat the shit out of his equipment, that does not make you a good drummer. Wish I could make as much money as he does by adding as little as he does.

  • ya crazy on that side on big stage gott have headphone on be lost lol otherwise lay it down nice couple chokes up but normal sounds desent

  • FROM THE BAY (REDWOOD). LOVE TOWER OF POWER, ESPECIALLY DAVID. HOWEVER, OOPS TOO MUCH RIM NOT ENOUGH SHOT ON APROX. 2:08. have fun being overly critical ;) And yeah, luv tha FUNK!!!!

  • laugh out loud.

  • Man what's funneh? Have you eva seen travis? travis amazing apparently supose to second best but idk theres some amazing drummers this only video i seen of David drumming but i find hes just playing mostly same beat just ina faster and slower beat which toke me away from it...But anyways i've gota say you play i guess some wa good...not the best i've seen out there but eh soo man ye suck me left nut if got somein say

  • Nobody's got beef with you man. It's just well known among the drumming community that guys like Travis are good in a commercial sense, but not as much in an artistic sense. Travis has brought some very creative drumming to Blink182 (I own all their albums), but in terms of contribution to drums in general as well as overall skill, artistry, and versatility, he's got a long line of legends ahead of him, and even he knows that.

  • As far as David's playing goes, take a moment to learn about funk drumming and what the "pocket" is, then you'll understand what makes this guy so great.

  • travis bites ass!

  • rolling on the floor laughing my ass off with tears flowing

  • nice one

  • Yeah, I'll laugh at the dumbass as well.

  • not a drummer's perspective:

i've heard of Travis, but never actually heard his stuff. reading the threads here, my guess is, that, *on an off day*, Dave DiCenso would chew him up and spit him out :D My favorite drummer's better than yours :P... Whatever.... Stop making a contest out of it... Love Garibaldi's style. In the pocket, great limb independence. The guy just friggin' grooves! (end of Part 1)

  • Part 2:

And this is a DrumFest, not a 'gig', right? So he's trying to impart some knowledge to folks, not sell a music video or otherwise show off... I think he nailed it in that respect, showing how in control of the mechanics he is...

Anyways, it's all good, it's about the music and how good (in theory ;) t makes you feel...

    Peace

  • MATTEYEY1!!

Only a youngster like you has the guts to compare Garibaldi to a drummer still using pampers.. You have no clue who is playing on this video! Sorry mate.. Just keep youtubing for Garibaldi and suck it all up!

  • One of my favorite things he has ever done is when he worked with Spiro and Jesus Diaz. Should check that out if you even slightly like this.

  • He is also very lazy. Almost behind the beat. V. Funky.

  • I kinda expected him to be black!!!!!

  • i use his jam master sticks!!

  • ever played the jam master ride? Oh my god, it's amazing...

  • I feel like crying! He is amazing!

  • try this on yt klb solo abby pub

  • OMG! that guy is so deep in the pocket of the beat. that jacks me up.

  • Весьма заряженно и здорово!

  • Whoa there, buddy!

  • I'm a huge TOP and Garibaldi fan... his style *is* the TOP sound... and fits right in with Prestia's bass lines... but am the only person who ever thinks Garibaldis beats sound like Clyde Stubblefield breaks played backwards?

  • They might be! :-)

One of the exercises that he talks about is to take a certain groove and write it out. Then write it out 15 more time (assuming 4/4 time) and off set the groove by a 16th note each time, causing the groove to "cycle through" 15 different incarnations of itself. You can get some really Funky stuff from some relatively simple patterns, doing that.

Dave is THE Man when it comes to this stuff

"UHH! my main nerve's been struck"

  • I love his sense of linear playing. His sound is so funky. One of the greats in drumming.

  • groove and funky drummer

  • He is the best.......just love this song......

  • I have respect for him, but he's not my type, I like Steve Gadd's linear drumming

  • I could listen to groove players alllll day! David G. is a groove monster! His drums sound really good but the cymbals sound kinda...processed and tinny. Oh, well, he likes it, what the hell...

  • can groove like a bitch on ice baby!

  • In my opinion is pretty boring, I dont like Tower of Power that much.....

  • hey man just let it ride. this stuff flows out of you like a good piss. no kidding man, jam this and you will get stuck in a trance!

  • What!!?!?!?!?!?!? you must not like funk, but if that is not the case, maybe EWF is more to your liking

  • whos EWF, I do like funk, but not tower of power, it doesnt bother me at all, but is not one of my favorites, I Like Dave Weckl Band better

  • earth wind and fire of course. Garibaldi is a god of linear drumming so many drummers really appreciate his work

  • Are you serious EWF is the greatest of all time you tube them

  • He's a Groove Drummer, he is more concern with the groove not so much in the fills. He's good but not my type of drummers. I Like Weckl and Colaiuta Better

  • This song is nucking futs! What crazy changes! David deals it out great!

  • can i have that ride cymbal please?

  • its the sabian jam master ride...his signature. never used it but i cant imagine its not amazing lol

  • One of the greatest to ever live.....period.....not once out of time....

  • all you fags dont get it, you dont have to be playing 300 BPM to be a good drummer, simplicity is so much! this guy is one of the best drummers in the world! speed isnt everything, in fact...i GOOD drummer serves the song, not his own selfish wants of stealing the stage. grow up and sit behind your kit until you realize what drummings about. tard farm inbread freak

  • rlrrLrlrrLrl is the pattern, no double lefts like a paradiddle.

Garibaldi is so amazing he had a biscuit named after him.

  • Hmmmm... his ok... there was this guy called tom whose much better though...

  • its neither a single or double paradiddle.

  • its single paradidle.

  • It's almost refreshing to see the guy make a mistake or two. Pretty damn rare though. Even the pro's make mistakes, they're just better at covering them up than the n00bs.

  • yeah grsouto that groove was so stupid that they are now millionares....ping that...so what are your chances on american idol...slim... to.. well never mind.

  • Britney Spears is also a millionaire.

  • They could have given him better headphones :D

  • what a fucking stupid groove!!!

  • The definitive example of "Funk Drumming"!!! I've been

transcribing David Garibaldi's grooves for a couple of years now, and within a few months, my pocket and groove playing had greatly improved. I had also had programmed some of his ideas into my drum machine for practicing. This man is a true "Craftsman"!!

  • he messes up a few times, hihi :)

  • no he doesn't. Garibaldi is one of the authority figures on funk drumming (especially linear playing) he is playing some odd meters. thats about it.

  • play constant 16th notes, 2 and e of 3 are accented, fill in the rest, just keep the groove. 1 & - 3e on bass drum.

  • is this single paradidle or double?
