The Longest Day is about the entire first day of the battle of Normandy, from the British landings in the east near Caen on the beach designated Sword to Utah Beach at the base of the Cherburg Peninsula, looking at various units and engagements. Saving Private Ryan is about one company which landed at Omaha Beach and then had a platoon tasked to find and send back a Private Ryan, whose other brothers were killed. It is based on the Sulivan Brothers, who all died aboard the USS Juneau in 1943
