Elliott has gotten me through so many tough times in my life. it continues to this day. in the here and now - I think it has saved my life again just to be grateful to listen to his voice. I want to live to honor his memory.
This is the devils music- the reality of emotion is constant- the time, the place all of that is irrelevant with E. Smith he just is there wherever you hear him. or he puts you there.
And some people wonder why he killed himself...sheesh, have they ever actually taken a second to LISTEN to his lyrics? Fuck, even his MELODIES are depressing.
but beautiful. Depressing but beautiful, that's Elliott Smith. Bless ya, man. You may be dead, but your music lives on and damn, does it fucking destroy.
@Chihuahuarocker He might have struggled with depression, however that wasn't all of who he was, just a part of him.
The fact is, that the "Suicide" was never conclusive and doesn't make sense for many aspects, all I ask of people is that they show a bit more respect instead of just making the assumption that he did it to himself.
If you said "The reason he may have" that would have been fine.
You get the sense of someone deliberately willing himself into complete withdrawal from the world. When he repeats the title line over and over it's like someone plugging his ears and going "La la la la la la la la la..." The effect is almost too intense to bear.

@Malocclusiontenfour No. It sounds more like someone who doesn't understand the basics of songwriting. It was a perfect moment for him to transition into a harsher, more hard rock verse but like a dope he just rode out the chorus.
*I just checked this song out 'cause the title is cool.
Yeah but I don't like your suggestion, I don't want some tired rock out section in this song. That is the sort of thing that happens when you try and assert and impose strict songwriting rules on music.
@billhicks8 "This is the sort of thing that happens"....WHAT is the sort of thing that happens? Nothing has happened. The sing is as it is. You like it the way it is.
Learn to speak clearly, idiot. Learn to express ideas.
Not this song, but other songs that have used the cliche approach you've demanded here. Notice I said 'that' and not 'this'. WHAT 'that' is, is a tired rock out section.
'The sing is as it is' indeed, and for good reason. And nobody is 'speaking' here, idiot. Learn yourself before you start lecturing others.
@billhicks8 You are probably some wimp who doesn't like "rock out sections" because you're intellectually and artistically incapable of coming up with good ones on your own. Keep letting your superiors create the hard rock for you, little fag.
Translation: 'I came on here thinking I could write an antagonistic troll comment and make others look stupid, but since I'm now being corrected and starting to look silly myself, I'll just stick to the insults'.
@billhicks8 I didn't come on here writing antagonistic remarks. I criticized Elliot's song. You were to much of a pussy to take it. So you picked a fight with me. Then you lost it.
I think most of the world would agree with my view that songs are generally more exciting when the chorus changes ocassionally rather than sounding the same throughout. You hold the minority opinion on this matter and it happens to be false, as indicated by the poor record sales of this artist.
'I didn't come on here writing antagonistic remarks.'
Oh I doubt that, by your immediately hostile and provocative tone...false.
'I criticized Elliot's song'
Correct.
'You were to much of a pussy to take it.'
Incorrect. I disagreed with you, is that such a shock?
'So you picked a fight with me.'
Incorrect. Look again, it's real obvious. And your last paragraph asserts an oversimplified generalisation, and then uses record sales as objective 'evidence' of quality: False
@billhicks8 Admittedly, record sales are not evidence of quality BUT, with the catchy hook in this song, one has to wonder why it was not a commercial success. The reason is the one that I cited. The chorus drags on adnauseum and does not excite the listener. With the one alteration I suggested, the song would have been a huge success and would have been better artistically as well. My tone was not antagonistic at all when I began commenting but weak losers like you got offended..
No. You made a comment that you knew other people would beg to differ with, and when I responded, in disagreement and without insult, *then* you got feisty. Experience tells me that this is usually an intended troll right from the start of the first comment, or someone who can't discuss things civily at best. Again, the rest of your assessment of this song begs simplification, exaggeration and disinterest in listener subjectivity. The song style works fine for others.
@billhicks8 Now you are just spewing pseudo-intellectual babble. Stop for a moment and contemplate how pathetic and worthless you are as you tout your cyberspace "experience" at troll detection. Think back to a time when you were younger, before all of these fancy gadgets of the digital age turned you into such a nerdy weiner tool. Then go get a girlfriend who has actual breasts.
I appreciate your concern for me. I realise that by lacking a severely agitated and hostile tone, combined with overlooking the need to impose 'big-rawk' ejaculation choruses on songs; I have inadvertently become the antithesis of what (busty) women want; chest beating, shit-flinging macho over-compensation and sexual frustration.
See, I can be an armchair psychologist too, thanks Casanova.
@billhicks8 "Again, the rest of your assessment of this song begs simplification, exaggeration and disinterest in listener subjectivity"-----That sentence makes no sense.
What you were trying to say is that my assessment SUGGESTS simplification, exaggeration, and so forth. To say that it "begs" simplification etc., would mean that my remarks deserve simplistic, exaggerated response.
This is clearly not what you meant, but you were indeed stupid enough to write it.
from dictionary(dot)com def 3: 'To take for granted without basis or justification'
This definition can obviously be applied as critical evaluation to the one making the initial assertion (you). So not only were you wrong in criticising my grammar the first time, you've made the same mistake *again* but regardless of this, even if it were an error it would not make me stupid, but it would and does make you a pedantic troll.
@billhicks8 Even with that definition, your foolish poorly constructed sentence makes no sense. I "take for granted" my own alleged simplification, exaggerration, and dumbest of all,my "disinterest in listener subjectivity'" NO. That is not what you meant to say.
You meant to say that my arguments were simplstic and exaggerrated and that they EVINCED or EXUDED or SUGGESTED a disinterest in listerner subjectivity on my part. I did not "take for granted" my own narrow mindedness
"Again, the rest of your assessment of this song *takes for granted without basis or justification* simplification (you seem to think your one track minded approach to songwriting is self evidently superior) exaggeration (your deluded sense that you could change this song into a smash hit) and disinterest in listener subjectivity (your baseless disregard for personal tastes).
The problem is once again with your own inability to comprehend. This is the third time you've screwed up
@billhicks8 I picked apart your diction, not your grammar. It does indeed make you stupid to make such profound mistakes when you tried so hard to seem intelligent!...lol
*sigh* same website: "the study of the way the sentences of a language are constructed; morphology and syntax". You can also use the word 'diction' and indeed, I would have preferred to use the word 'diction' in retrospect (if all this really matters to you). But, tiresomely, my definition is yet again just fine. And why do you seem to think my comments here attempt such heady ambitions? My points and explanations have been pretty simple and direct. A fourth fuck up?
@billhicks8 I have effectively proven that you cannot write properly. The lack of specifics in your response indicates this and renders your pathetic affectations meaningless. You did not have the aptitude to explain WHY I am supposedly wrong, because you are afraid that I will expose your ignorance once again. A word to the stupid: Instead of practicing fake sighs and feigning "tiredness," spend more time reading books. Also, try to get laid before you turn 36. Cheers.
Ref my comment: *takes for granted without basis or justification* simplification (you seem to...' etc. I'm putting this on your failure tally, I hope you know.
@billhicks8 So you're not going to address how nonsensical your sentence is, once you actually insert that definition?
Even with this longer definition which you cite, the sentence still basically says that I have taken for granted my own narrow mindedness and tendencies towards exaggeration. Does that really make sense to you or are you just desperate?
I didn't 'insert' it, I explained it, and then elaborated on it because you can't and won't understand in fear of some kind of hurt pride. Now again we see you making a hash of this: you've taken for granted that your glazed over perspective is the one shared by all. How difficult is this for you to understand? The further you go with this, the more your abstract and hollow interpretation of language betrays limitations. Though it is funny.
@billhicks8 "The further you go with this, the more your abstract and hollow interpretation of language betrays limitations. Though it is funny."------ This time, you have chosen to end your pseudo intellectual musings with a sentence fragment. THAT is what's funny.
'You did not have the aptitude to explain WHY I am supposedly wrong'
Again. Two dictionary definitions, an explanation of one. I could also easily explain why there is not an opposition between the words 'grammar' and 'diction' more than that of preferential choice.
The real problem here is that you've barged into these exchanges with such an over confident bluster, that you've tripped up over yourself. Just asserting things doesn't make them so, it's not a good cover.
@billhicks8 Ok. Every time I try to hold you to account, on the basis of logic and reason, you retreat to this pseudo-intellectual nonsense talk.
HERE ARE THE FACTS: Your sentence, with your newly inserted definition states: "Your argument takes for granted disinterest in listener subjectivity." CLEARLY, that is pure nonsense, and you are a fool for having written it.
Once again, you should have written that my arguments evince, exude, or suggest a disinterest in subjectivity.
You have taken, as a given, a disinterest in subjectivity. I'm not saying your comment 'suggests' it, or 'exudes' it, no, your comment assumes that, *like you* other people will have a baseless disregard for personal tastes.
@billhicks8 Did you also mean that I assumed the rest of the world would [like me] exaggerate and oversimplify things?!?! I find that extremely hard to believe.
Even if you were saying that I assumed others would agree with me, this would not require that those other people "exaggerate."
Your sentence was a foolish one; you may as well admit it.
I am going to print it out. I've always wanted to make an Oxford English professor laugh himself to death.
'Did you also mean that I assumed the rest of the world would [like me] exaggerate and oversimplify things?!?!'
Wow, you haven't distorted or misunderstood what I've said, I must be finally breaking through. Your assertions basically assumed 'one size would suit all'. Much like your view that record sales would be indicative of quality.
'would not require that those other people "exaggerate."
As in have an over confident sense of what makes something 'good'?
@billhicks8 The sentence you wrote was already stupid before you started changing its meaning 100 different times, in order to save face. 1. Only a retarded person would actually believe that the meaning which you now assign to your abominable sentence was your original meaning. 2.Even if it had been your meaning, it would still be a horribly constructed sentence. 3. The Oxford professor retired after reading your sentence.
@billhicks8 'would not require that those other people "exaggerate."
As in have an over confident sense of what makes something 'good'?--------WOW.
That's a stretch that would make a contortionist wince in pain. Now having grown tired of murdering the English language, you are disgracing the art of reasonable discourse and debate.
@billhicks8 So by simply writing the word "exagerrate" you expected a reasonable reader to infer that you meant "possess an exagerrated sense of confidence" rather than giving the word its plain meaning?
NO ONE would believe you. Man, you are bona fide fucking idiot.
i sat down to listen to one elliot smith song and here I am 3 hours later still listening to his songs and suckin on some OE like it was a milk filled titty.......
this song always remind me of walking home in the snow from college last year. I would stay down the sideway as far as the eye can see and think to myself...
Elliott is not depressing, and what if he is? Most people are ignorant suckers, Elliott music makes me very happy. I´m so sorry he´s not with us anymore (sorry about my english, it´s not my mother tongue...)
@brosniedro " Depressing is not a word I use to describe my music, there is some sadness in it- there has to be, so that the happiness in it will matter"
probably the most hauntingly beautiful tune that has ever and will ever exist. Elliott Smith was a freaking genius, up there with the greatest classical composers.... <3
@manicmarzipan Not saying this one is better or as good, but check out "Mellotron Scratch" by Porcupine Tree, also very beautiful especially the ending.

@ThatOnePokemonKid Wow, look at the tears flowing over some anonymous person's opinion on crappy music. Keep crying, maybe you'll end up like Elliott Smith and we can all sleep a bit easier knowing there's one less butt-hurt pansy in the world.
i heard this song the first time when i was upset but i didnt feel like i could cry i kept holding it in and when he got to songbird on his shoulder who keeps singing over everything i cried for everything and for everyone it was like re birth
Well this is a great song and I could never top it, but as a musician who's listened to Elliott Smith you might want to give my stuff a go. Just click on my name. Thanks for your support if you do :)
His music bubbles below everything one perceives. And I wince when people dismiss it as depressing; he successfully tackled all forms of human feeling. Nothing was alien to him. He could navigate all moods/modes. I mean, how effortlessly joyful is PRETTY (UGLY BEFORE), musically speaking?!? Even Johnny Marr's guitar never sounded that happy. As for this one, It's so explosively ethereal that one comes away not knowing OR caring where one is. Whilst, Half Right is impossibly introspective. RIP <3
@theunsheep It is depressing. Don't you know what symbolic imaginary is?!? I'll say not all his songs are depressing, but this one is -.-;;;; Even without the music, if it was just the words itself. Makes it seem as if time stood still and nothing better would happen anymore.
@Izzykat@Izzykat No. I don't even know what symbolic imagERY is. How on earth could this be depressing when it's entirely to do with the supreme comfort of emptiness? In other words, NOTHING CAN BE STOOD FOR WHEN EVERYTHING IS BLOWN OVER, so why waste time emotionally attaching yourself to anything? There'll always be nothing, but there won't always be everything. That's all I'm saying. But, then again, aren't they the same things? And, am I full of shit? And, are you right? Quite potentially.
my ex g/f introduced me to elliott smith so many years ago, i was just a kid back then. i remember hearing this song for the first time, i woke up to it playing early in the morning. 5 years i spent living with this girl, we met in 10th grade, moved out together, shit we grew up together. then one day she cheated on me, so i broke up with her. it was very much unlike her to do such a thing, to this day i wonder why... elliott smith will forever bring me those bitter sweet feelings.
If you don't really get this song and are wondering why it's a bit depressive, just remember that the song before it on the album is called 'everything reminds me of her'
Songs like this makes me REALLY REALLY wish he never died. He was on pace to make the greatest album of all time. I WHOLEHEARTEDLY believe if he kept progressing like he did from Either/Or to Figure 8 he wouldve topped Revolver by the Beatles. THIS is his White Album. MASTERPIECE!
There's alot of anger in these songs...as sad as they may seem...Elliott was sort-of starting to drown himself when he wrote this...it was a big fuck you to his record company...People attach alot of sentimentality to Smith but you have to remember that this guy was not fragile in the least...Suicide is an act of aggression...sad, depressed people don't do these things...angry people do...Either way, right or wrong I am temporarily sated when I listen to this...
I've loved Elliott for years, and this has always been the song that I've looked at as the "too depressing to listen to". My girlfriend of a year just said she can't handle the stress of the relationship anymore. Guess I have a reason to listen to this song now.
@corporateohio i know how you feel my girlfriend that i was going out with for a year and i were so inlove. but i realized her feelings for me were fading, i was in so much pain i couldn't take it, she started lying, and ignoring me i was a reck, so i broke up with her because it only got worse..... it was the only way i would have lived on and now everything else is just blank and pointless in my life and just fades away.....
I have to remember this song when I begin to feel sad and angry about the bullshit of the everyday people. This song it's something like a mantra. A nice mantra, without all the religious crap, without Buda. It's like a mantra without faith. A selfish pray about nothing, because there's nothing out there. There's no health, there's no god or happiness. Only ourself. Only beautiful voices like this young man. Excuse me, but this is a mantra: "Everything means nothing to me, everything means..."
@MezcalFaceDonut ... gotta say man ... i feel the same about it ... and people should understand that this is an extremely positive song ... It reminds me of wha

Again. Two dictionary definitions, an explanation of one. I could also easily explain why there is not an opposition between the words 'grammar' and 'diction' more than that of preferential choice.
The real problem here is that you've barged into these exchanges with such an over confident bluster, that you've tripped up over yourself. Just asserting things doesn't make them so, it's not a good cover.
billhicks8 1 day ago
@billhicks8 Ok. Every time I try to hold you to account, on the basis of logic and reason, you retreat to this pseudo-intellectual nonsense talk.
HERE ARE THE FACTS: Your sentence, with your newly inserted definition states: "Your argument takes for granted disinterest in listener subjectivity." CLEARLY, that is pure nonsense, and you are a fool for having written it.
Once again, you should have written that my arguments evince, exude, or suggest a disinterest in subjectivity.
MIvarsson99 1 day ago
@MIvarsson99
You have taken, as a given, a disinterest in subjectivity. I'm not saying your comment 'suggests' it, or 'exudes' it, no, your comment assumes that, *like you* other people will have a baseless disregard for personal tastes.
billhicks8 1 day ago
@billhicks8 Did you also mean that I assumed the rest of the world would [like me] exaggerate and oversimplify things?!?! I find that extremely hard to believe.
Even if you were saying that I assumed others would agree with me, this would not require that those other people "exaggerate."
Your sentence was a foolish one; you may as well admit it.
I am going to print it out. I've always wanted to make an Oxford English professor laugh himself to death.
MIvarsson99 1 day ago
@MIvarsson99
As in have an over confident sense of what makes something 'good'?
billhicks8 1 day ago
@billhicks8 The sentence you wrote was already stupid before you started changing its meaning 100 different times, in order to save face. 1. Only a retarded person would actually believe that the meaning which you now assign to your abominable sentence was your original meaning. 2.Even if it had been your meaning, it would still be a horribly constructed sentence. 3. The Oxford professor retired after reading your sentence.
MIvarsson99 1 day ago
@billhicks8 'would not require that those other people "exaggerate."
As in have an over confident sense of what makes something 'good'?--------WOW.
That's a stretch that would make a contortionist wince in pain. Now having grown tired of murdering the English language, you are disgracing the art of reasonable discourse and debate.
MIvarsson99 1 day ago
@MIvarsson99
'I am going to print it out. I've always wanted to make an Oxford English professor laugh himself to death.'
Erm, okay knock yourself out. I'm sure they will be very interested.
billhicks8 1 day ago
@billhicks8 So by simply writing the word "exagerrate" you expected a reasonable reader to infer that you meant "possess an exagerrated sense of confidence" rather than giving the word its plain meaning?
NO ONE would believe you. Man, you are bona fide fucking idiot.
MIvarsson99 1 day ago
@MIvarsson99

Elliott is not depressing, and what if he is? Most people are ignorant suckers, Elliott music makes me very happy. I´m so sorry he´s not with us anymore (sorry about my english, it´s not my mother tongue...)

RIP <3
theunsheep 1 year ago 64
@theunsheep It is depressing. Don't you know what symbolic imaginary is?!? I'll say not all his songs are depressing, but this one is -.-;;;; Even without the music, if it was just the words itself. Makes it seem as if time stood still and nothing better would happen anymore.
Izzykat 11 months ago

theunsheep 11 months ago
@Izzykat @Izzykat No.

Bakonpants 1 year ago 5

I've loved Elliott for years, and this has always been the song that I've looked at as the "too depressing to listen to". My girlfriend of a year just said she can't handle the stress of the relationship anymore. Guess I have a reason to listen to this song now.
corporateohio 1 year ago 3
