I still believe that this music is best in smokey bars and clubs. This is great but listening and watching over a couple of beers has that added authentic factor!
No- not John Paul Jones of Led Zep. Paul Jones harp/vocal of 'The Blues Band', ex-'Mannfred Mann' in the 60s, has the only weekly blues national-radio show on BBC in UK.
Wow, people can tell who was better by listening to camera audio that sounds l like it was recorded in a reverb tank... No offense but it is what it is and that's just a couple of players jamming in a huge room and having a good time. If you want to judge it as a competition you'd have to have a little better audio quality- no offense to the video poster. Sounds like a live band just like you recorded.....
Gotta admit, as much as I love Joe; his voice has seemed strained recently. I saw him half a month ago and he was just not the same. The Jools Holland show is a perfect example really.
Its not about who kicked who's ass..Its about the music and it rocked..Gotta love Eric he plays with everybody and just makes the music so awesome and fun to see and listen too.
to MoreGilmour: poor taste in humour, man. It's almost as if you blame Clapton for Stevie Ray's death. We all miss Stevie, but don't ever blame anyone but the fog on that godforsaken night !
Great performance, but Clapton...do me a favor...Don't invite Joe to go on tour with you..ever. Especially if it would include a stop at Alpine Valley, Wisconsin.
From what I hear in this clip, both guitarist played great on the song. Also, you might consider it normal that Joe, who is twice younger than EC, has somewhat 'flashier' licks. Also i feel that, in a blues song, all players are equal if they succeed in expressing a bluesy feel in their playing. Moreover, I doubt that EC, at this stage in his career would feel the need to compete with the younger generation. By the way, Eric's vocals on the song are better in any case.
As a long time fan of Eric I felt that Joe kicked his ass, and that hurt me, maybe Eric as well, look at the DVD and you will see Eric telling his guitar tech to get his guitar after his playing, he looked peaved
Nothing against either player or guitar, but it's really the guitarist and not so much the guitar. Eric can make that Strat talk. Joe is a excellent Strat player also, but has been using a Les Paul more lately. He sounds great on both.
I have just realised that you have filmed my baldy head (2 rows down from you centre left of row) for over 5 mins!!! Thanks a bunch. Do i get any royalties!?
Let us go back in time.... Joe played as a 12 year old kid with Danny Gatton on stage... amazing isn't it??
The number they play was actually on the set list of Roy Buchanan in the early 70 ties. What happened, somebody left a cassete of Roy's show in the mail box of the hotelroom where Eric Clapton was staying and Eric liked the song and played it for many years... In that time (early 70ties)it wasn't nice to do eachothers songs ... nowadays nobody cares offcourse
Man that looked like a great show. You can see Dave Ling's (Classic Rock Mag writer) hair in the front row of the balcony above the drummer - too funny!
@seanylynch How 'bout you find us just one minority musician that Clapton has ever played with who believes him to be racist. If you like I can list for you some of the many minority musicians who got their big break opening for or touring with Clapton.
@seanylynch It takes a real simpleton to equate Clapton's views on immigration control to racism. The man has lived his entire life proving that music makes race irrelevant. He just thinks it's wrong to import masses of uneducated, unskilled workers of whatever race simply to reduce the cost of labor. It is bad social policy both in the UK and in the US and the cost is teaming ghettos, disintegrating infrastructure and increased racial tension.
Reply for xxdunkalixx - the song is "Further On Up The Road". Check out Clapton's CD "EC Was Here" (originally released in 1975) for another great live version and "Just One Night" (1979) for a stonking seven-minute version.
The awesome Joe Bonamassa joined by Mr Clapton-OH! to have been there! All you lucky peeps who were there!!! Thanks for posting this, and yeah! great sound quality. The Two Masters at work!
I was there last night. One of the best gigs I've been to recently - better even than Buddy Guy at Shepherd's Bush last year. Joe played practically non-stop for two and a half hours. Eric came on fairly early (at about 9) for just this one number - it would have been great if he could have played a bit more, but I guess he's saving himself for his own gigs a the RAH later on this month. Amazed you were able to get such good sound on this clip from where you were seated Thanks for posting.
Many thanks for posting this. A brilliant night made even better with EC showing up. I thought Eric's solos and tone were awesome and a perfect compliment to Joe's. You even managed to get me in the frame when you panned round at the end! Cheers!
This wasn't a normal gig. In his words "The biggest night of my life". His parents were in the audience to see a gig he had dreamed of since he started playing 20 years ago. EC's appearance had me thinking I'd died and gone to heaven. Paul Jones appeared on harmonica (Joe seemed to think we were all there because we'd heard him on Paul's Radio 2 show!) The acoustic stuff was the best I'd ever heard from anyone. Two drummers - awesome!!
Scott McKeon opened and the 21 year old did us proud.
Oh Lord... how cool is that... I was thinking last night constantly how is it going? will everything work out for Joe? ...and then on top EC in his living room with Joe... I can't wait for the DVD... :-))))
It was a fantastic show. I thought it was quite funny that the first time I ever get to see Eric Clapton perform live is at a Joe Bonamassa concert. Definitely one of the highlights of the night!
I saw him last saturday (may 2) in Groningen during the Rhythm & Blues Night. What a performance, He played for almost 2 hours (only 1 hour was scheduled). He the did also "Further Up On The Road", unfortunatly without EC....... :-(
But he mentioned his gig at the RYH and that he was "practising" with his BIG Band (2 drummers and horns) for that gig. Greetings, Mr.Ed

Have to say: EC is far better singer than JB, JB seems weak in this song, it takes decades to sound like Eric, he is complete musician, 100%.

strat with many colors (sound)...
LP good, i like it but whoever play LP sounds the same to me....Joe sounds much better on strat..he could put more colors and emotion to the songs..

There certainly seem to be some serious deficiencies in seany's education, but it's never too late to learn, assuming he's up to the task.
brc859844 2 years ago
The man's deeds over 40 years say far more about him than some drunken incoherent views expressed in the 1970's.
Move on Seany! Ask BB King, Buddy Guy, Robert Cray, Stevie Wonder, Curtis Mayfield's family, Billy Preston's family, Willie Weeks, Steve Jordan, Nathan East, Greg Phillanganes, Jimmie Rogers, Hubert Sumlin etc etc if they think EC is racist cunt!
Their opinion might be more valid than yours!
Unless they are all Uncle Toms who do what the white boys say that is!

It would be odd for someone who loves the blues to be a racist! Well it's bad enough that anyone would want to be a racist!!
