  • two guitar gods.

  • joe's family are in one of those boxes at around 5:15 !

  • I still believe that this music is best in smokey bars and clubs. This is great but listening and watching over a couple of beers has that added authentic factor!

  • Wow! great, but wanted more closeups of players.

  • how blues can you get joe?

Clapton and Bonamassa, say no more

  • No- not John Paul Jones of Led Zep. Paul Jones harp/vocal of 'The Blues Band', ex-'Mannfred Mann' in the 60s, has the only weekly blues national-radio show on BBC in UK.

  • not sure about the suit Eric ? its not a wedding mate ,

  • looks like a bunch of corpses in the crowd

  • thats cause there all moving in the same rhythm

  • pretty much is at most blues shows. all guitar geeks.

  • great sound:)

  • Wow, people can tell who was better by listening to camera audio that sounds l like it was recorded in a reverb tank... No offense but it is what it is and that's just a couple of players jamming in a huge room and having a good time. If you want to judge it as a competition you'd have to have a little better audio quality- no offense to the video poster. Sounds like a live band just like you recorded.....

  • the actual date of this concert was May,

    4TH, 2009 lol

  • Have to say: EC is far better singer than JB, JB seems weak in this song, it takes decades to sound like Eric, he is complete musician, 100%.

  • Gotta admit, as much as I love Joe; his voice has seemed strained recently. I saw him half a month ago and he was just not the same. The Jools Holland show is a perfect example really.

  • @dralontube wow, thats an pretty ignorant statement.

  • @dmb3305

    If you say so... :))

  • robben ford and gary moore live inside mr bonamassa's fingers

  • Its not about who kicked who's ass..Its about the music and it rocked..Gotta love Eric he plays with everybody and just makes the music so awesome and fun to see and listen too.

  • to MoreGilmour: poor taste in humour, man. It's almost as if you blame Clapton for Stevie Ray's death. We all miss Stevie, but don't ever blame anyone but the fog on that godforsaken night !

  • From what I hear in this clip, both guitarist played great on the song. Also, you might consider it normal that Joe, who is twice younger than EC, has somewhat 'flashier' licks. Also i feel that, in a blues song, all players are equal if they succeed in expressing a bluesy feel in their playing. Moreover, I doubt that EC, at this stage in his career would feel the need to compete with the younger generation. By the way, Eric's vocals on the song are better in any case.

  • As a long time fan of Eric I felt that Joe kicked his ass, and that hurt me, maybe Eric as well, look at the DVD and you will see Eric telling his guitar tech to get his guitar after his playing, he looked peaved

  • Disagree, blues sounds best on a Strat.

  • strat with many colors (sound)...

LP good, i like it but whoever play LP sounds the same to me....Joe sounds much better on strat..he could put more colors and emotion to the songs..

  • Funny that as the most respected Clapton blues is on a Gibson, Bluesbreakers, Cream

  • yep the Strat is such a versatile sound, don't be bloody knocking it, Les Pauls and Strats are both fantastic instruments! ^^

  • Nothing against either player or guitar, but it's really the guitarist and not so much the guitar. Eric can make that Strat talk. Joe is a excellent Strat player also, but has been using a Les Paul more lately. He sounds great on both.

  • finally Joe's getting what he deserves..

  • why do they have two drummers?

  • just simply for a bigger sound

  • Because Joe wanted a great thumping sound for the Show

  • wilson loyd cole are the boys this is great tho

  • why is everyone sitting?

  • Good one Ceri!!!!!

  • Haha - where's that winking emoticon gone...?

  • clapton pwned.

    lol

  • To RoarEge

I have just realised that you have filmed my baldy head (2 rows down from you centre left of row) for over 5 mins!!! Thanks a bunch. Do i get any royalties!?

    Regards

    Firripsz

  • and you have a fine bald spot at that!

  • JOE shows respect and reverence by not blowing Clapton away with his scales and skills . Nice one

  • In your dreams!

  • @russhird you don't believe that - I listened to his blues solos on the PBS airing of this concert-

  • this is really epic...imagine how Joe and his band felt when THE legend played with them....fantastic

  • Let us go back in time.... Joe played as a 12 year old kid with Danny Gatton on stage... amazing isn't it??

The number they play was actually on the set list of Roy Buchanan in the early 70 ties. What happened, somebody left a cassete of Roy's show in the mail box of the hotelroom where Eric Clapton was staying and Eric liked the song and played it for many years... In that time (early 70ties)it wasn't nice to do eachothers songs ... nowadays nobody cares offcourse

  • Man that looked like a great show. You can see Dave Ling's (Classic Rock Mag writer) hair in the front row of the balcony above the drummer - too funny!

  • @seanylynch How 'bout you find us just one minority musician that Clapton has ever played with who believes him to be racist. If you like I can list for you some of the many minority musicians who got their big break opening for or touring with Clapton.

  • There certainly seem to be some serious deficiencies in seany's education, but it's never too late to learn, assuming he's up to the task.

  • The man's deeds over 40 years say far more about him than some drunken incoherent views expressed in the 1970's.

Move on Seany! Ask BB King, Buddy Guy, Robert Cray, Stevie Wonder, Curtis Mayfield's family, Billy Preston's family, Willie Weeks, Steve Jordan, Nathan East, Greg Phillanganes, Jimmie Rogers, Hubert Sumlin etc etc if they think EC is racist cunt!

Their opinion might be more valid than yours!

Unless they are all Uncle Toms who do what the white boys say that is!

  • @seanylynch It takes a real simpleton to equate Clapton's views on immigration control to racism. The man has lived his entire life proving that music makes race irrelevant. He just thinks it's wrong to import masses of uneducated, unskilled workers of whatever race simply to reduce the cost of labor. It is bad social policy both in the UK and in the US and the cost is teaming ghettos, disintegrating infrastructure and increased racial tension.

  • He is? Where did you hear that from?

It would be odd for someone who loves the blues to be a racist! Well it's bad enough that anyone would want to be a racist!!

  • In Clapton's own words:

"There's no way I could be a racist. It would make no sense".

  • i was there ;D

    row 2, seat 112!

  • Thanks for the post. I sat in almost the same spot as the folks in this video 4 years ago for the cream reunion. Brought back a lot of memories.

  • Eric also does a great version of this song on "The Bands" Last Waltz

  • Reply for xxdunkalixx - the song is "Further On Up The Road". Check out Clapton's CD "EC Was Here" (originally released in 1975) for another great live version and "Just One Night" (1979) for a stonking seven-minute version.

  • I was there! What a great night.....I can tell you folks that when EC walked on stage 4,000 people collectively did a little wee in their pants!

Memorable gig but I'm glad I saw JB last year at a venue with just 400 people. If you have never seen JB live, at any cost you must!

  • Great post, nice quality for a private concert video

  • Wow that's awesome. Thanks for the post.

  • I have no idea what song they're playing, and I can't make heads or tails of the lyrics. But this is beautiful.

  • Dunno if anyone has replied, but he song is Further On Up The Road'. Check out Google for lyrics

  • Sorry, this should have been a reply for xxdunkalixx

  • BTW - note to Joe and RAH - please sort out the sound system for next time - it wasn't balanced at all from where I was!

  • Wow - I was there up in "the gods" and the sound from your video (presumably mobile phone) is much better!

  • wow, i bet it was amazing to be there, thanks for posting!!!

  • thanks for posting this - I was there and it was just amazing!

  • I was there!

    What a night,superb.

    A night to remember.

    Thanks Joe..........

  • The awesome Joe Bonamassa joined by Mr Clapton-OH! to have been there! All you lucky peeps who were there!!! Thanks for posting this, and yeah! great sound quality. The Two Masters at work!

  • Yeah - I was directly opposite, left side of stage - best gig in years!!!

  • Are you following me Eldo? lol

  • A totally brilliant night. Joe was incredible, never heard him sing or play better. :)

  • I can see me:) What a night and Joe showed at the forum after show party and stayed for ages :)

  • Thanks for posting.

Amazing night and an Amazing venue. Got to be in my top 5 of concerts, I've been to.

Loved the Clapton, Joe jam, almost as much as Joe did lol and didn't Paul Jones make the mouth organ sound unreal, the acoustics were superb.

Cheers Joe for another fantastic night!

  • thank God for youtube

  • Brilliant performance last night. What a suprise it was when Joe announced Clapton was to join him for this song!

  • I was there last night. One of the best gigs I've been to recently - better even than Buddy Guy at Shepherd's Bush last year. Joe played practically non-stop for two and a half hours. Eric came on fairly early (at about 9) for just this one number - it would have been great if he could have played a bit more, but I guess he's saving himself for his own gigs a the RAH later on this month. Amazed you were able to get such good sound on this clip from where you were seated Thanks for posting.

  • Many thanks for posting this. A brilliant night made even better with EC showing up. I thought Eric's solos and tone were awesome and a perfect compliment to Joe's. You even managed to get me in the frame when you panned round at the end! Cheers!

  • Superb! So glad im going to see him on 28th Nov.

  • This wasn't a normal gig. In his words "The biggest night of my life". His parents were in the audience to see a gig he had dreamed of since he started playing 20 years ago. EC's appearance had me thinking I'd died and gone to heaven. Paul Jones appeared on harmonica (Joe seemed to think we were all there because we'd heard him on Paul's Radio 2 show!) The acoustic stuff was the best I'd ever heard from anyone. Two drummers - awesome!!

Scott McKeon opened and the 21 year old did us proud.

  • Did I read a Paul Jones showed up? Not John Paul Jones????

    whose is the second drummer?

  • Anton Fig

  • awesome gig....and i got his sunglasses

  • Really?

  • Last night was incredible and to have a cameo from Clapton, cherry on the cake!! Bring on the UEA Dec '09 !!

  • Absolutely awsome gig so glad I was there. Can't wait to see him again.

  • An absolute privilage to have been there last night awsome! Thanks for the post.

  • When I saw him playing this song the 1st of May I knew EC would be there at RAH, I was right! Now I want the DVD so bad!

  • GREAT!!! It had to be great for Joe to play with one of his greatest influences!

  • totally awesome show and venue, i feel realy lucky to have seen this

  • It was a fantastic show. I thought it was quite funny that the first time I ever get to see Eric Clapton perform live is at a Joe Bonamassa concert. Definitely one of the highlights of the night!

  • I saw him last saturday (may 2) in Groningen during the Rhythm & Blues Night. What a performance, He played for almost 2 hours (only 1 hour was scheduled). He the did also "Further Up On The Road", unfortunatly without EC....... :-(

But he mentioned his gig at the RYH and that he was "practising" with his BIG Band (2 drummers and horns) for that gig. Greetings, Mr.Ed

  • I was there, thanks for the post

  • Awesome!! Thanks for posting this!! I wish I could have been there. Thank you!!!
