No, now that there is an SMP installer, you don't need 7zip or Winrar because you don't need to manually install it. Just click the install button on the installer

Im not sure. I think as long as your minecraft has an accessible jar file, you should be able to mod it.

You may have compatibility problems. Try force updating minecraft, and if that does not work, clear your entire minecraft folder and redownload minecraft from the website. Keep me updated with how you are doing.
