  • Maybe you need to replay the Master's version to know which one you remember is best.

  • I keep coming back to check out Mark's rendition because his vocals with the violins are most impressive to me !

  • Mark and Eel do a great version . I like Roy Harper, Pete Townshend , Joni Mitchell, Joe Cocker and anyone else who sings this song ! It's just a beautiful song about that long past love we let slip through our hands and will care about to the day we die.

  • I am one who really does feel like Bob Dylan can do no wrong, but E does this song better than he does.

  • I like this performance even better than Dylan's, Joni Mitchel's, Cash's, Cocker's and Keith Richard's versions... Amazing.

  • amazing :)

  • Qué versión más cojonuda, emocionante

  • There's a reason why both Bob Dylan and E sing this amazingly...the rough tone of their voices fit the longing in the song just right. This is the most beautiful version of this song I've ever heard and I thought I'd never like anything better than Bob Dylan's version.

  • I'm both crazy about Dylan and Eels. I think this is a really great version. suits his voice very good :) like to hear a springsteen version too..

    cheers

  • E is the only one who is aloud to sing this great Dylansong! great version.

  • Dylan didn't even write this song you chumps

  • @Invinciboss I think you'll find he did, you excuse for a human being!

  • @Invinciboss I think you'll find he did, you excuse for a human being!

  • @Invinciboss Dylan did write this song. Cash and Dylan are the best..

  • @Invinciboss Written by Bob Dylan. It was first released in 1963 as the second track on Dylan's second studio album, The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan.

  • Lions do a good version of this song too.

  • You got to love the dylan fanboys, I agree as I also am A big fan of the old dylan and his songwriting abilities, but please you have got to be joking that he has any version other than the cd version and maybe the one with cash that doesnt sound completely shit. Also if you would know anything about E, you would know he had his fair share of pain.

  • I don't care for this version. Bob Dylan has better renditions than this. The best I have heard is the Lions version, Check it out.

  • Great song, but not close to as heartfelt as Dylan's version. Nobody sings Dylan like Dylan. Plus this song was about heartache and lost love in Dylan's life, who could sing with more passion than the person who the song directly affects the most.

  • Huh, and I thought I was the only one who thought the Eels' cover was better than Dylan's original.

The cover on Live At Town Hall is extraordinary, as is the rest of the album.

  • jrushmen, thanks for your post ! I checked it out and was very surprised at the results. I knew Mark was intelligent but now I can see why. THANKS !

  • Mark Oliver Everett's father was a very intelligent Quatums Professor and he was rather reclusive. He didn't spend much time with Mark. He also died of a heart attack when Mark was young. I saw a documentary on PBS about his father and I was totally shocked when I saw Mark in the documentary as his son. Blew me away and anyone should check it out ! Now with all this said : I totally understand why Mark sings this song this way.Don't be fooled, he is very intelligent song writer in his own right.

  • @jrushmen I saw that PBS documentary and Like yourself , I was totally caught off guard and definitely blown away ! I love the way Mark sings this rendition. I feel the yearning in pain in his vocals. Thanks jrushmen for the heads up.

  • Neil cronin says, "purely the greatest songwriter on the planet" even though it's not his song. It's just him. I agree,

  • I like the eels, but for me this doesn't really work. I always wonder what people are getting at when they say things like 'the definitive version of this song', doesn't really seem to make any sense to me. Especially not when allied with phrases like 'one billion times more' this and 'one million times more' that etc. Rosanne Cash does a great version of this song on her album 'The List'. Wouldn't call it 'definitive', but good nonetheless.

  • This version is one million more times coherent and and one billion times more heartfelt. the definitive version in my eyes

  • I like Dylan. Really, I do. But this version of Girl From the North Country is more heartfelt. Especially considering his backstory.

  • Brilliance

  • this was one of maybe 3 dylan songs that i just didn't get. didn't like it, didn't want to hear it. don't care if you throw johnny cash in there. he does a great job making this song beautiful. kudos

  • This is beautiful.

  • just 1000 times less intense than Dylan's own version. Good try, anyway.

  • Dylan was an amazing song writer, I prefer this version though, so sue me.

  • Even i desclaimer that i really like Eels, from Beautiful Freak to Blinking Lights, and i really thing this version can't be compare with the original one. The original is magic this one is only the Eels-style version.

  • This is beautiful.

    Thank you for posting it.

  • Alright a disclaimer first: I love Dylan, he's one of my favorites of all time but this version is sooooo good (actually I'm completely hooked on the whole Eeels w/ Strings project and been listening to it non-stop for awhile now) and I do like this version better than Dylan's.

    Ok.....now.....I'm ready.......bring on the hate !!

  • rawr rawr rawr. jk.

  • Joe Cocker and Leon Russell's version from the "mad Dogs and Englishmen" concert is sublime

  • Idiot. Variety is the spice of life you ignorant shit.

  • Definitely my favourite version

  • I think that all versions of this song build on the beauty of Dylan's original composition. It so interests me to hear them all......

  • credits to dylan, but man, E's version is so much better!!!

  • Are you serious??

  • dylans version of this is infinatly better than this, the piano and strings are so soppy, the original is stoic but tender this is middle of the road

  • I'm with you. Version I like best is the duet between Dylan and Johnny Cash from Cash's TV show.

  • ahhh gives me chills.

  • the eels' version of this song on the cd "from town hall live with strings" is even better than this. and yeah, E's version is better than Dylans, for me. but shit, Dylan stil wrote it.

  • Lovely. I love Dylan, always have, but I never liked this song, until now.

  • You are an idiot! What have you done? It is a tribute to somone he respects. Something you wouldn't understand. At least he has accomlpished somehting other than critisizing people he doesn't know on the internet. What are you 12? Idiot!!!

  • Dylan wishes he had written it to be performed like that

  • hmm....no prob not
