Linda Ronstadt's version is quite lovely, and that's the version the bodyguard executive's went with. Dolly made the song, Linda paved the way n whitney made it popular over powering the other versions, but i wouldnt say its the best they're all lovely in their own way
Dolly's version from '74 was the first one I heard, and I loved it. Then Whitney sang it almost 20 years later, and I loved it. A good song is a good song, no matter who sings it.
Doesn't matter who sings it..though I will Always love Dolly's version,,,but fact is Dolly gets 100% of the royalties nobody who sings it so it doesn't matter if Whitney sung it or if Whitney's version goes number one again...Dolly gets the money
No need to argue about whose version is better; they are both good in their own right and both brought it to number. To cover a song isn't to steal a song. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. I do agree about Kevin Costner's use of this song in the movie Body Guard. I had no idea the role he played in its use. Love Dolly's version, but I have always been a fan of country music. Love Whitney's version too; she really rocks this song. Linda Ronstadt's version is nice too. Look it up.
Welcome to our world! Plenty of our songs were stolen not just covered and the original artist and writers got neither credit nor royalties. And to add insult to injury the covered versions didn't even sound better than the originals in most cases. Get over it. Whitney's version is more acoustically pleasing and it was more marketable. Dolly cried at a Whitney perfomance of the song because her version gives EVERYONE the chills.
I know people have there opinions on who is there favorite, Dolly or Whitney, as for me, I just cant choose. Its like choosing what child you love most, you dont! You just love them in different ways. Both versions are beautiful and heartfelt. Dolly is amazing for writing this song and Kevin Costner had tremendous insight for choosing this song for The Bodyguard.
Whitney Houston's cover of this song was a great performance, but I like how heartfelt it sounds when Dolly sings it. It just sounds more genuine, and less manufactured.
Great info, but Dolly Parton wrote the song but wasn't the responsible for the success of the song, was Whitney, because many people hardly remember other versions of the song, and by the way, Whitney's was the best version.
Dolly sold this to several artists, and always said that she made enough from Whitney to start her wig business! I love all of the versions, it was truly a great song. Kudos to the writer, she wrote it as a parting gift to Porter Wagoner-not a love song, but a farewell my friend and professional mentor.
They are two different versions one is more country one is more soul and they are both comparable. For me being more soul, Whitney's is my favorite... but wouldn't exist if not for beautiful and talented Dolly. I've loved Dolly since Working Women. I used to watch it all the time when i was a little girl... on KCET :)
Dolly sings it as it should be sung-as a sweet, sad, wistful tune, not a bombast. And as Dolly wrote it about her unhappy love for Porter Waggoner,it has real emotion in it.Much better than the Houston monstrosity.
@LeoCouzineauMusic Love your comment! haha, I hate Whitney fans. they're so stupid, but enough about that washed up singer. Dolly, nobody can touch her.
You're right. Dolly Parton sings this song even better than Whitney Houston. It is incredible that Whtney sang it ten years later and acted as if she had been the first to record it.
Dolly does it! Sincere.

Dolly sings it with more heart and soul. I believe it when Dolly sings it. When Whitney sang it, it became just pretty words and an overkill.
Both are good mind you, but Dolly does it better.

You know what... whether it is Dolly or Whitney both reditions were sung very well and appropriate for the time and movie they were used in.
I don't know why some of you have to get into pointless pissing contests about it. You look like idiots. Grow up.
