Indeed. We experienced that, once it got warmed up, it did stop smoking. Most of that smoke on startup was due to the pine needles. I did it again with just birch bark and it didn't smoke much.

Smoke is normal until it get warm enough to burn the smoke. As soon as the insulation (pottery) get warm it will stop smoking.
