Out of all the Mansfield park movies I have seen this one and the BBC versions are my favorite and with Pride and Prejudice no contest the best is with Colin Firth as Darcy although I did enjoy Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Bennett.
I dont know why but I could see Colin firth as Mr. Bertram
The actress who plays Maria (or Maria in this film) is Victoria Hamilton. She was in two other Jane Austen adaptations. She played Henrietta Musgrove in "Persuasion" and Mrs. Forster in the 1995 "Pride & Prejudice". love her!
Ok, I'm lost...why does most comments keep saying "Maria?" when all I can hear (or at least that is what I heard) from this video that it was "Mariah?" so which one is it?
@sparkl1nwat3r .. Hello there, the reason you are confused is one of 'internation'... the spelling is the same but spoken differently... Maria (mar-rye-a), (mar-ree-a) ...It's the same for Marie... (mah-ree), (mare-ree) etc...
I hope this helps, best regards from a very wet Wales :0)x
@sparkl1nwat3r ,,, Hello there, I think your confusion is one of phonetics... It is spelt the same way but spoken differently... Maria/Mariah (ma-ree-a) (mar-rye-a) Similarly with Marie (ma-ree) (mah-ree).
I hope this helps, best regards from a very wet Wales :0)x
@writingal2 Ooh..thanks for clarifying that up. That makes sense now! But why don't they just use the real one in the book instead of calling her Mariah?
@sparkl1nwat3r I'm guessing the spelling changed over time. This book takes place in the early 19th century and it's possible the "h" in Mariah was added later on. I know I was a little confused while reading because it seemed that she had a Spanish name, it makes more sense to me now, knowing that it was pronounced Mariah.
@MiaOnTheRoxxs - yes i did! although i wish they had made the romance between molly and roger longer, it was just kind of like, k goodbye cynthia, hi molly, i love you molly, africa and credits - waited a long time for them to get together and i got about 2 seconds of the happy ending :/
@bogabilla1987 Indeed, I feel Cynthia did'nt deserve the love of Roger. I mean when he sent her letters she was always like 'Pffft do I really have to answer?!' While Molly was always interested in what he had written and what he told about Africa. Men can be so stupid, they always fancy themselves in love with the more beautiful and rich woman and only in the end they realise that the love of their life had always stood next to them and had to suffer their stupidies. That's my opinion :p
@MiaOnTheRoxxs True! - but then again Cynthia wasn't wealthy at all, it's just that everyone was so swept away by her beauty that they all had this ideal perception of a Cynthia that didn't exist, which was what Roger found out in the end. I did feel Cynthia to be quite a pitiable character though, she lived her life for everyone else in a way and was never truly happy till perhaps the end of the movie.
...You wouldn't believe how many times I had to watch this to get that when he says "It calls for some Shakespeare" he was talking about the horse... Yeah, I can be slow like that =)
It's Ruby Pratt from Lark Rise to Candleford as Maria and Molly Gibson from Wives and Daughters ^_^ I love how most actors that appear in period dramas, are often suited to be in all of them. It's like a little family circle :D
@MissxMelx94 i agree! and the most amazing thing is somehow, they never get stereotyped into their role, and are perfectly believable as a different character. All amazing, amazing actors :D
I like the twists on the characters, why not take a classic and make it not better but different. Especially the fact that they talk about slavery, it's interesting.
i laughed at the way they introduced the crawfords: expressions of everyone else first, then a ridiculous camera sweep from their feet to their heads.
So Lady Bertram is a tippler, Tom is too principled for slavery rather than too profligate to care about the family business and William is completely gone from the picture! Henry Crawford is handsome (in the book he was described as plain on first acquaintance). Only Mr. Rushworth and Mrs. Norris seem to be true to the book so far.
This movie has poor casting as far as the bertram girls go. Maria is supposed to be decidedly prettier than Julia, but Julia being a close second. Fanny being third at first and apparently the prettiest at the end. That's what I surmised at least. Also Fanny is supposed to have light eyes. I don't think her hair is ever mentioned but her eyes are light. Her and Mary Bertram look too similar to me. Rant over. :)
I pictured Maria prettier than portrayed. The actress who plays Julia is the prettier of the two. Pity. And Henry is more handsome than he should be (but I'm not complaining on that one! ;)).
you know i've taught this book several times stll can't figure it mansfield comes from the mansfield decion about slavery in 1772 but it is also about performace, Fanny is prig and as Kingsley Amis once said who would you rather have dinner with Fanny or the Crawfords --very difficult book for me but the crawfords may be terricic perfmorners
@vivascargill I've often heard people say they like Mary more than Fanny. I know my mom does. Personally, I much prefer Fanny, she's such a sweet girl. Mary reminds me too much of Elizabeth Bennet, one of my least favorite Austen heroines. Shocking, I know! But there it is.
@WoundedWolfgirl not schocking--The argument is made for P@P that Lydia kind of covers for Lizzy who would be like Mary Crawford! if there were no Lydia
But The debate keeps going--Edmund who says he detests multiple livings may be getting some at the end--or Fanny if you look closely may be pregnant! Mary's brother is another hard one. Mrs. Norris is the only really evil character Austen ever created. Fanny well I cannot say --I think JA gets her right in Anne Elliot .I am trying it again
@WoundedWolfgirl no you are on to something--Fanny I think however is not sweet--there is a unpleasant energy lurking behind that passivity. Me I go as I said for Anne Elliot. I've always like Jane better than Lizzy and people find that puzzling--Emma if you read closely is admirable though she seems snobbish (well couldn't have been since the word only entered the language in 1830) I forgot if I posted you about the title Mansfield Park
wrong choice for henry crawford... he shouldn't be appealing. He should be plain at first sight. His preciosity lies in his personality, his mind, his charisma.
what is this?Maria and Julia are supposed to be more beautiful than Fanny, and it's the opposite here!moreover, fanny seems to be much more appealing than depicted in the first parts of the book...she supposed to be blossoming after the 'theatre' parts...and after Maria's mariage!!
I agree with you one hundred percent, but I must say I am entertained by this version. I have seen some Jane Austen bores and this one keeps me intrigued even though the book is ALWAYS better.

I don't know which version I prefer, this or the one with Billie Piper...
Whoever wrote the 1995 Pride and Prejudice miniseries needs to redo Mansfield Park... Or Emma Thompson, she did an amazing job with Sense and Sensibility
I totally agree! The 1995 Pride and Prejudice keeps wonderfully true to the story; it would be great if the producers did a version of Mansfield Park.
the americans stole the NATIVE americans' heritage, forced them into "civilizing' schools to make them 'white', made them stop speaking their language, and killed thousands of them when the native's wouldn't agree to moving out. i call that barbaric.
maybe it was the British blood still running in their veins! Anyways, in my original comment, I did say that English are civilized, on common law for example...it was only their superiority complex which made them do ugly things.
That's the indoctrination of your university professors talking. It wasn't the "Americans" it was the English.
And that does not include the Germans, Poles, Czechs, et al, who emigrated to the US and built it into what is is (or was I should rightfully say).
The English brought the slavery, caused the Civil War. Geroge Washington said, "Never let my feet touch English soil" and so under his statue in England there is a piece of American ground.
Why do all the villains have to be so darn good looking?!

I don't know which version I prefer, this or the one with Billie Piper...
Whoever wrote the 1995 Pride and Prejudice miniseries needs to redo Mansfield Park... Or Emma Thompson, she did an amazing job with Sense and Sensibility

Agreed!

I totally agree! The 1995 Pride and Prejudice keeps wonderfully true to the story; it would be great if the producers did a version of Mansfield Park.

I respectfully disagree. The US has never oppressed a people. So much so that the country nearly got divided for protection of human rights.

the americans stole the NATIVE americans' heritage, forced them into "civilizing' schools to make them 'white', made them stop speaking their language, and killed thousands of them when the native's wouldn't agree to moving out. i call that barbaric.

maybe it was the British blood still running in their veins!

Our Euro ancestors are not all English.

actually that would be the English, the French and the Spanish. The term 'American' came mych much later.
