@wuzzlevideos no...TVS was Television South which was taken over by Meridian in the early 90s. Television South West (TSW) was taken over by Westcountry Television at the same time.
ITV was once a great broadcaster, and still is to certain degrees. But, if you want the company to be saved, please return to this format. This was great. It showed the corporation was professional. Stop broadcasting chavy, patronising rubbish on ITV 2 and sometimes on one and become ITV, the company to be proud of. After all, do we really need 4 ITV channels?
I think was a great move for the Network at last ITV truely had a Network feel to it and started acting like a Television Network.. No offense I think that us British can sometimes be to British with comments like yours... This is just my view...
Just the start of the sanitised ITV network we now have. The Granada one was never used. I guess someone in charge didn't like the idea. They stuck to their own idents.
I find old idents strangely interesting. Am I odd or just sick to the teeth of the pure irrelevant BULLSHIT that TV pumps out today? (excluding BBC1's and C4's new idents 'cos they're cool)
It wasn't all that bad. To be honest, I like dual branding the best. Regional branding is good, but sometimes, because it is just one tiny company, the idents can look cheap (take a look at the CTV idents from the 90's) however, the Central idents were always good, and Yorkshire. Nationalized is boring, samey, cheap and crap, like the chav ITV1 we have today.
But with dual branding, you can have the regional branding and the stations name, telling you where you are and what channel it is.
Yeah, my problem isn't with dual branding per se but it's that the ITV logo takes such massive precedence and it's just a "nod" to the region. Ideally it should be the other way around, the region given precedence and "Part of the ITV Family" or "X, From ITV" could be used instead of "HEY GUYS THIS IS ITV (oh btw thames is involved too, kinda)". See what I mean? :)
They started in September 1989 but not across the whole ITV network - some regional stations such as TSW refused to use them. Within a year the other regions started to move away from the generic look to reintroduce their own idents.
TVS decided not to use this ident. TV ark is a good site, they have Central using its own music for the Generic ident. I think it is a shame they changed all that regional stuff too.
stv has it's own ident along with utv, channel tv has it's own continuity announcer & promotes itself as a local station at every opportunity, the rest of the network falls into line with "big brother" or itv productions as it likes to be called, for this year at least, cutbacks are due soon for regional news in the border & tyne tees regions, shareholders come before the customer as in ANY company.shame.
The problem was that it was not true Interdependent TV because during the 50's the Government put a load of restrictions on ITV and a more then a few stations lost there licence. After the legislation on ITV. The Network suffered poor ratings. Times have changed and so have Government views and those old restrictions have been dropped - Thank god!
I've still got the LWT one recorded somewhere when the pilot episode of Beverly Hills 90210 started in 1991 on a Saturday as I remember very well. ITV was FAB in those days unlike now where there's nothing cool
When ITV identity was great. They were branding the company and still having a regional identity. I hope in 10 years time ITV improves and realizes it made a big mistake by ditching regional branding. The trouble is, is that they never listen to their viewers anymore!!
@tpirrules19 Thames carried this on as in 1988 all in-vision announcing in the daytime stopped across the network and also it would have been useful if each company had placed this under the ident in the same way that others do to alert people that programmes were being subtitled.
TVS *did* use theirs at least twice because a friend saw it and described it (correctly) to me including the bizarre use of "TVS Television" underneath.
A quite high-up person at Channel Television wasn't even aware of the ident's existence, in about 1992.
There were at least three different versions of the music if you listen carefully - here, listen and compare Thames, Central and Granada. Thames had a smooth end without the "tinkles", and it always sounded very flat compared to LWT who (mostly - although not here) used a more upbeat sounding version with the "tinkles" at the end. Seems like the third variant was coincidentally put on the idents that remained largely or wholly unused.
The very beginning and end of each ident contains the unique parts with regional colour and symbol, so it's a shame so many of the edits in this video chop off the very start and end of the ident.
Wow I remember this, back when I was a very little boy.
I live in the Harlech region (Cymru Wales)
I remember HTV had a face on screen reading out the upcoming programmes etc, Dilwyn Young Jones often did this and some woman with blonde hair, forgotten her name, Prichard is her surname I think.
I agree with you guys bring back the regions, give us HTV back, I was horrified in 2003 to see HTV Wales turn into ITV 1 Wales.
I live in a part of Nottingham where we could receive broadcast from Central on Waltham and Yorkshire on Belmont and I have to say I never ever remember Central doing the generic thing but Yorkshire used to use it all the time! I think Central were way past there time and had there own thing going on. BRING BACK REGIONALITY!!!
I can happily say our generic ident was rarely used, mainly because it was incorrect!
The Granada ident had a bar going from the G logo at the bottom to the apex arms at the top, the Generic ident missed this off so the top was suspended in mid air!
I have made a mock of the one for Anglia using the clean ITV generic one, but I'm not sure how the copyrights work when you've edited something for review.
i could name all the regions in that vid as follows: Grampian Television Television South West Scottish Television Television South Border Harlech Tyne Tees Thames Television Yorkshire Television London Weekend Television Granda Central Independent Televison
i remeber the old itv back in the day in the 90s it was great like in 1989 1990 1991 and 1992

these tv companies were great on thier own
because each had thier own unique ident until the mid 90's
when itv got thier fingures in far too many tv neworking pies
yorkshire tv lost it's identity and became itv yorkshire lwt went under
themes tv is now called talkback themes with granada and anglia tv
also got took over by itv and carlton tv also went after had a short lived
movie channel called carlton cinema and lastly granada plus chan also
went under and became men and motors.

Noticed that the V in ITV identifies which region is broadcasting. Somehow the one for Scottish Television just doesn't look right/familiar.
