Comfort is right in asserting that the cross was a LEGAL transaction. The question remains "was it an EFFECTUAL transaction?" The ramifications are manifold. If it was effectual then it got the job done apart from any obedience on our part (Rom 5:19). If that's true and you believe in the doctrine of hell, then Christ did not die for all. If Christ did not die for all there is no basis for the Well-Meant Offer upon which Ray-Ray's philosophy of ministry rests.

Turning from darkness is not the same thing as turning from sin.

If one has to stop sinning to be saved, then they are trusting their works to save them.
I believe Rays point is that we must turn from sin/repent (Acts 2:38) meaning stop living a sinful life style or living in the flesh and live in the spirit. (Romans 8:5-9, 12:2)
A sinner sins out of will and disregard to authority (God), when a Christian sins its often a battle, and we feel regret (Romans 7:18-25) and thus repent.
But I do agree he needs to correct his wording (and get something fresh to say, while hes at it) someone who does not study the word can get the wrong idea.
The Christian life isn't about US imitating Christ and trying to be good. It is about Christ living HIS life through us. He said the He is the tree and we are the vines grafted in Him. Yes, we all sin but as we grow in Christ, His Spirit gets more of us. Our standing is ALWAYS perfect in Christ because it depends on what He has done for us but our STATE is never perfect because it depends on what we are in of ourselves. I like to think of it that way.

You're misunderstanding what they're both saying, I think. It's not that by our own will we make ourselves stop sinning when we come to faith, but that God changes us/ the Holy Spirit empowers us so we desire to not sin. That is the natural outcome of being saved. It's not the cause, but the effect. If the fruit is missing, then you need to examine yourself. And God does get the credit because it is only by His grace and His strength that we are able to resist sin; we can do nothing on our own.
"Repent of or turn from sins" and then he goes on to say "don't trust in your own goodness." Which one is you double-talking heretic Comfort.

BUT NOW we are NO LONGER (as in times past they were)under law.Law is the measurment of sin.
There is no sin imputed to us..so your white lie,your mixing of fabrics,planting the wrong vegetables together,being angry without a cause,etc is COVERED by the blood of Jesus COMPLETELY.
You are called by God to BELIEVE that..if you dont -then you cant be saved.
God's not peeking under the blood to see what sins a saved person committed.

We do have to repent(Luke 13:3). However, the problem is Comfort misunderstands and perverts repentance. Repentance is a gift from God(Acts 11:18). God GIVES us the power to turn from sin whenever we TRUST IN JESUS CHRIST TO SAVE US. Not the other way around. If one has to stop sinning to be saved, then they are trusting their works to save them.

I believe Rays point is that we must turn from sin/repent (Acts 2:38) meaning stop living a sinful life style or living in the flesh and live in the spirit. (Romans 8:5-9, 12:2)
A sinner sins out of will and disregard to authority (God), when a Christian sins its often a battle, and we feel regret (Romans 7:18-25) and thus repent.
But I do agree he needs to correct his wording (and get something fresh to say, while hes at it) someone who does not study the word can get the wrong idea.

The Christian life isn't about US imitating Christ and trying to be good. It is about Christ living HIS life through us. He said the He is the tree and we are the vines grafted in Him. Yes, we all sin but as we grow in Christ, His Spirit gets more of us. Our standing is ALWAYS perfect in Christ because it depends on what He has done for us but our STATE is never perfect because it depends on what we are in of ourselves. I like to think of it that way.

I don't agree with Mr. Comfort using the words, "stop sinning" because it is very close to sinless perfectionism, but I doubt RC was advocating sinless perfection or instant spiritual maturity and if he did I hope he examines himself on that, he may have jsut meant stop sinning habitually or stop living in sin...or stop being 0% repentant in regards to sin.

I don't think "trusting in our own goodness" is a sin... but if we only trust in our selves we will fail and thus end up sinning if we do.

Ray is not making himself clear here, I'm sure that Ray would acknowledge that he has sinned since he became a christian.When you repent what naturally follows is a desire to not sin.Ray is strongly contrasting this to people who make a 'decision' for Jesus,then go out and fornicate,sin etc.I personally don't see the point in this vid, Ray preaches good biblical evangelism and the church shouldnt be divided over what is most likely Ray not making himself clear

Hard for me to see this. It was "Hell's Best Kept Secret" that gave me the inspiration and courage to share the Gospel...many things changed for the better in my walk by learning from WOTM.
I do see what is wrong now though. I think it's important to get this message out. I hope someone is talking to Ray about this, not just talking about him.

You're misunderstanding what they're both saying, I think. It's not that by our own will we make ourselves stop sinning when we come to faith, but that God changes us/ the Holy Spirit empowers us so we desire to not sin. That is the natural outcome of being saved. It's not the cause, but the effect. If the fruit is missing, then you need to examine yourself. And God does get the credit because it is only by His grace and His strength that we are able to resist sin; we can do nothing on our own.
