Tonight I was craving this type of food and so thanks to this video and a few others I made my first kadhi and khichiri dish and it was really nice! Can't wait to try something else out next time! Thanks :)

  • @shafeenb

    Thanks for the great feedback!

  • @ShowMeTheCurry The bengalgram makes the Kadhi yellowish but I notice that in many places, the Kadhi is as white as the curd. How is that so ?

  • @aviskp : It is the Haldi (Turmeric) that makes the Kadhi yellow not the besan - omit the haldi and you have white kadhi :)

  • Thanks for the good explanation of Kadhi. Can I request a recipe for "Miti Rotli"..which goes great with Kadhi. I am gujarati myself, so appreciate all the help I can get learning our cooking! Thanks to you both!! You are giving me the courage to get in the kitchen..

  • Thanks! Do you mean "Gari Rotli" when you say miti rotli...the one with the stuffing?

  • @tambi007 As a technique, after the tempering(tadka) is added (when the mix. is slightly cooled) the mix. is not to be boiled. They followed the correct technique.

  • thank you!!

  • Great recipe, I am going to try it, I love gujrathi kadhi but always thought it must be hard to make, you guys make it look so simple, thx a bunch. just one question though, i saw "ginger" as one of the ingredients, but you never used it in the recipe. what happened to it?

  • It is there at 3:06, right after the water and yogurt have been blended.

    Enjoy!

  • I am about to make khichdi Kadhi for dinner....Thanks for the recipe.

  • thanks for the video. I never thought it is so easy to cook kathi. keep posting such videos.

    thanks

  • I never thought that indian food had so many ingredients but i knew that Gujrati (sp?) had a lot of ingredients as its mostly vegetarian and as alot of vegetables have a bland taste it needs more ingredients (herbs, spices etc) to make it taste better and for me it actually does but you can't beat the texture of real meat. But yeah theres loadsa ingredients so stock up, cos they last long.

  • Hi there I'm surprised as well that there's no garlic used in this kadhi as it is usually one of the main flavours in a Gujarati Kadhi.

As a Gujji myself, I noticed from some of the vids that as well there being variations of the same dish from different states, variations can also occur from different families/ districts of the same state.

thanx though as a novice cooker (though I make a great head chef with my know how! I just don't have the practice) these vids r helpful.

  • Thank you for pointing out that there can be variations in recipes. Many people believe that there is only one way to prepare a certain dish - how boring that would be!

Most of the recipes we share are from our own homes (things we have grown up with). Like you said, recipes vary from region to region, home to home.

  • I find it curious that I've watched 4 vlogs on Indian cuizine and not one uses "GALIC".Indian people don't like garlic in their food ?I'm sure they do but all recipes I've watched looked like it could use a little GALIC !

  • Actually, we use garlic in most of our recipes. Funny that you found one of the few ones that we didn't use garlic. You can definitely add garlic to this recipe as well. It will surely be delicious!

  • Wow,you replied back, thanx.Yeah, I watched 4 consecutive video's of yours and not one had Garlic. I guess I should of watched a couple more.I was bound to get one.One thing that would be great is if you described certain ingredients that are not common in the U.S. I was left scratching my head with some of the ingredients. Another thing that would be informative is describing the most common dishes someone would find at an Indian restraunt. I hestitate trying some chinese dishes for that reason.

  • If you get a chance, check out our videos "Stocking Your Pantry for Indian Cooking" - Part 1 and Part 2. You can get a good idea of the most common ingredients (the way they look and how they are used).

  • I've noticed that quite a few Gujarati dishes don't have either onions or garlic. I could be wrong but it might be because of the Jain influence in Gujarat. The Jains that I know don't eat onions and garlic because they believe they make the body and mind 'hot and crazy'. Onions and garlic are definite staples in my kitchen but you can still make your dishes really tasty without them as long as you season everything properly (e.g. ginger, chili peppers, salt, spices, etc).

  • Hi, I commented on your Chai remember? lol. This looks good. I agree about the stirring- hopefully someone would invent a stirring apparatus. : )

  • thank you so much. can you pls pls pls also teach how to make oondhiyu

  • Your vaghar is burnt, i can smell it. FYI you don't add celantro in vaghar. it is a garnish that goes on top after your kadhi cools off.

    good job by the way.

  • You should really try putting the cilantro (coriander) in the vaghar. You'll be surprised how fresh and green the leaves remain.

  • ya kadhi is hot like ya babes

  • ya kadhi is hot like ya babes

  • Really nice one....

I really appreciate your efforts and i did follow your guideline and trust me test like heaven..

    Thx

  • Hi, I made this last night and it turned out AMAZING! Thanks so much for sharing this recipe. Your method was very easy to follow and for the first time my yogurt didn't split. Thanks again.

  • you should add jaggary/gurdh to make it real gujju style. :-)

  • marry me, you are hot!!

ps: can i have recipe for maravadi kadhi pls

  • Nice set of recipes..but you need to improve on the presentation. Your passion for food is simply not seen - its looks too made-up.

  • gujju kadhi always has sweet flavor frm sugar i guess.. didnt see ya puttin anything to bring the sweetness..

  • We made a comment at the end of the video stating the same. We prefer our kadhi on the tart side so we didn't add any sugar but we said that most Gujarati dishes have sugar so feel free to add it.

  • Will there be a big difference in taste if it's not added? My friend Chhaya like to make it sweet and it as good without, I'll ask her to make it that way.

  • It is not by no means "all" Gujarati recipes that use sugar, whether in cuddy or any other food. This is a very popular misconception Indians like to have!

As Anuja and Hetal say, if you prefer a tarter version, omit the sugar.

  • Thanks for sharing..........
