Odd there is no mention of Thuban in this discussion. Thuban, today a dim third magnitude star in Draco, was the pole star at the time being considered (4,600 or so years ago), for the same reason that Orion was lower in the sky: precession of the equinoxes. As an amateur astronomer 13 year old boy in the early 60s, the astronomy books in the library taught me that the pyramids were aligned to Thuban. What has happened to this idea? And did I really hear the learned prof say "pyramidiots?"
