Real compressor surge (which is what causes the damage) is when it has a mismatched turbo / engine combination and UNDER POWER the turbo is surging. The 2 forces acting in different ways - 1 on the turbine wheel being pushed from the engine being under power and 2 the back pressure on the turbine - as i said acting in different ways is what causes damage. Blow back from no bov causes no more damage than driving on boost.

This guy is 100% correct. The reason that no one can name the sound of the BOV, is that it is indeed compressor surge. Better fix that quick, or you won't have to worry about that turbo for much longer.
