Which I thought was rather definitive and nice to see that an old man can have strong opinions. However he later retracted the comment after a legal threat from his brother and changed it, not without irony, to "Stayin' Alive." Very special this song.... It was playing the night I met my first proper girlfriend back in '79. It became our song. About 4 weeks ago I met her again, in unfortunate circumstances, and she says that everytime she hears it she's taken back to that night and that it reminds her of me.... Of course it is ! Tem cuica aqui ! I know quite well the sound and use difference between a berimbau and a cuica.

It only starts at 1:02 and is very clearly audible between 2:25 and 2:45, during the break.

Just listen carefully right on the background. All along the song... gently sings a cuica.

It is not used exactly as in the carioca samba style with switches from low to high pitches. Here it's played in a simple syncopated or after beat fill on a single note.

@Marillionboy Phil's holding a Wazoo. This clever little instrument looks like an elaborate ice cube holder and makes a kind of "shuck" noise. You can just about detect it in the background if you listen really hard using your ears.

It should be said that some rock critics, notably Paul "hiya" Gambaccini, have contested this, suggesting that Collins was in fact handing out Ferrero Rocher chocolates to the rest of the band and that he got caught up in the moment.

Oh...and BTW...did any of those questioning Phil's Genesis ever wondered what would become of Genesis if PG never left? Prog rock had its own time... Probably and if Genesis still existed with PG it would still be different from the 70s progressive Genesis.

Just look at PG's solo, just as much as Phil's solo: neither of these two followed the "Genesis way". So, why'd you think that PG's leaving destroyed Genesis?

Peter Gabriel leaving was the best thing that could have happened. He had a fantastic solo career. Phil Collins had a fantastic solo career. Mike had a great run with the mechanics. Genesis went on for decades becoming a hugely successful band, while still being remembered for the awesome progressive years. As for Tony, well, he's too awesome and sophisticated to be a huge success on its own.

Now, if Peter would have stayed, they probably would have argued and disband, instead of transforming

@MrAugustus88 you call it progressive, but really just because of the general sound and the chosen instruments, that make it appear to be so. harmonically and rhythmically it hasn't got anything notably "progressive" anymore. it is stuff designed to be a radio hit : extremely simple (especially when compared to genesis' older composition). the genesis that wrote marvellous pages in history of music, that were incredibly creative and original ended with wind & wuthering. if not earlier.
