My way of thinking is this: the os upgrade has to represent the money ill pay for it. Like windows 7 to windows 8 with minor changes for $300 for ultimate i wouldnt pay that. Its the cost of a new ps3 or 360. But snow leopard to lion and minor changes for $30...sure why not its less than the cost of a new video game. Just my 2 cents though.
The only problem I've had with Lion on my mac is a rare occurrence with the wifi not working properly. Otherwise, great and no complaints for a free upgrade!
Apple change and streamline their version of "Explorer" so Microsoft try to do it aswell, but instead of making it streamline they make it even more complicated.
Windows 8 is basically what OSX Lion is, but i bet Microsoft charge $200 for it compared to the $30 OSX Lion
Apple puts IOS like menu's/style etc into OSX - MS puts Windows Phone UI in Windows 8.
Not liking it and will not be buying it, staying with Lion
We will see if Windows 8 will be huge success. At least Windows 8 beta isn't out yet. Oh yea, even if Windows 8 isn't a huge success, it will still outsell crappy Mac OS X in couple of weeks i guess. Mac OS X finder just looks like similar to Windows Explorer in Windows 7 for me. Mission Control, eh... a other epic copy from Windows 7. I like Ribbon, at least i get my jobs down faster than you Mac user. At least users don't have to remember all the shortcuts.
I like windows explorer in vista and 7 even though they have the same UI but is much simpler than XP and Windows 8 but half of the people say that windows 8 is going to be called windows 2013 so is it going to be called windows 8 or windows 2013?
I think apple needs to move away from the mobile OS for the computers! Let computer be computers and mobile devices be...well mobile devices! Thats why people are saying that and ipad can NEVER become a full time computer but apple is trying to prove them rong! WHY!! Now with iOS 5 there trying to make mobile devices like computers! so heres apples plan make each thing like the other one so as to brig the gap between the two things!
I must agree with Dave, here. I find that both OSX and Windows have become bland and passé. While I like the concept of where Windows is going with the Metro UI, I'm just not sure it's being implemented correctly. OSX on the other hand, while minimalistic, is boring and sometimes goes for form over function.
It's too bad Chrome OS isn't the black horse it could be.
Eh... Hiding technical functions? Why do you want to do that. You see -- a PC is about work. You do serious work on a PC. I do agree about the ribbon stuff, cant stand that - but i hate the new windows versions that try to hide everything. If you want a pretty OS then download fedora os something like that. I also have macs - but i hate not being able to browse the whole filesystem. I actually coded my own file-navigator just to get full control! You dont get PC's at all it seems.
@TheScottAsher How is it "dumbed down"? You do realise that a command line prompt is "dumbed down" from the old hand made punch card mainframe systems right? And that adding a GUI is "dumbed down" from the command line. Why is making something easier "dumbed down"? Surely it means you get more done in less time? Being more productive is more important than being able to say "I know how to do this overly complex thing that confuses most people!". It's a tool, it should be simple to use.
I like that apple is trying to streamline all of its products to run similarly; however, I have seen the overall performance of my computer grow slightly my glitchy since the lion update.
It's funny how Microsoft's "rubbish" is simply complete speculation based on a single image, while Apple's is from serious problems caused by their Operating System that is suppose to "just work". And that somehow means a stalemate between the two....
@StephenFloydOfficial It's Microsoft. They have a habit of making shitty UI's that are overly complex and try to make no compromises. It's the perfect example of "design by committee". Rather than having a single goal or aim, they try and make it appeal to everyone, and it ends up appealing to pretty much nobody. They should put a few of the most common elements on there, and hide the rest. If you need something else, you'll go look for them, if you don't, then they're not wasting space or time.
@xDet3rmin4tionx Oh really? Go check the anothers 500 vids. I love dave's movies but i really hate the
"windows.. SUCKS" and "mac is AWESOME (to waste alot of money)" thingy in most of his vids. But he have alot of good point of view and awesome reviews. But ya Fanboy detected. I have a mac and a pc and i prefer mac for editing stuff ofc, there is no comparation. But i prefer buying a machine and install windows than spend alot more on a mac with the same specs to do the same thing.Good day
I'll be sticking with Win7. I will NOT be PAYING for windows EVER! I don't have a Mac and if I did....I would use Snow, fuck lion! Yes Apple is trying to remake computers and computing...and i just don't care! My new "PC" laptop rocks and cost less than $500! It works and that is all i care about! Still love the videos game!
Lion has made run pretty much ok putting a side some minor glitches. But one thing I can't stand is the management of heavy programs, they've turned to be much more slower on my 2010 macbook air than they used to be running snow leopard
only problem i have with lion is starting up my 13 inch macbook pro i cant click or touch anything on the computer for like 3 minutes after starting it up or it will lock up and need a restart. but my macbook pro is always on, just in sleep mode, so it doesn't effect me that much.
Ironically, right before watching this video, I had some trouble getting Lion on connected to my wi-fi. All I had to do was turn airport off and on to fix it, but I still never had that issue with Snow Leopard. All the new features are worth that one time hiccup though. I still love Lion.
On my Mid 2007 iMac it's definitely slowed down my machine, but not by too much. I'm loving the new features, such as Mission control, Launchpad, the new little tweaks such as better spotlight and quicklook, fullscreen apps, and more trackpad gestures. Lion definitely has caused some apps to crash more often, so it's not as stable as Snow Leopard, but I'm confident Apple will eventually fix the clunkiness of Lion within 3-5 months of patches/updates.
@spacekid407 To be fair a lot of the issues are the 3rd party apps that just haven't been updated yet. Granted you always get issues with a new OS release, but so far it's been pretty solid (for me at least). Snow Leopard had a more troubled start than Lion has up to this point, but they turned that into a rock solid platform and the same will be done with Lion.
if people are having problems they must be doing something to their computer cause im running lion on a late 2008 white macbook and it runs very smooth
I like Lions UI over Snow Leopard.. so i think it looks better.. but other than that i prefer snow leopard. I'm constantly being disconnected from the net.. had kernel panic! twice, and it's just all round laggy... and it crashes almost as much a vista pc. Bare in mind this is on an iMac with 4GB of RAM and a 3.6GHz Processor.. This has been the biggest let down I've ever experienced from Apple :/
@JonasHamill It has little to do with your machine and more to do with what software is running on it. Make sure all your apps support Lion. You're set up will be different from pretty much everyone else's, so whatever is different to people with the same hardware who have no issues will more than likely be down to software. It sucks I know, stuff like this is common with a new OS release. It may be worth doing a clean install and starting over, less headaches in the long run lol.
still happy with snow leopard im not ready to dumb down to the post pc era just yet I have serious creative ambition which aint gonna be happening if im using a tablet serious computing power is still needed in this world.
Well I've had a fairly stable experience accept boggy performance and consistant lockups. Also Ive had an issue when leaving imail open fore more then half an hour the whole system crawls untill the application is closed.
@Technology102 It'll be big enough for smaller stuff or when you're not able to connect it to a bigger monitor, but doing design work, screen real estate is everything, the higher the resolution the better. I use mine with a Dell UltraSharp 24" 1920 x 1200 IPS display, it makes life so much easier than using the smaller laptop screen, even if the resolution is the same (which it is with a 17" MBP).
haven't tried lion yet. but on the windows side, i do agree with you right now, windows 8 doesn't look like much good is coming out of it except for tablets, ribbon looks like it would be easy for tablets, but i am hoping microsoft makes some key changes to make this a newer and better version then windows 7
I had one kernel panic with Lion. The only time I've had it slow down on me was the first time I installed it but that was because Spotlight was indexing. The first patch came out not too long ago, and I do believe it addresses the Wifi issues people have been having.
@Technology102 Yep. I use a 13" model and it's more than good enough for those. You'll want a bigger external screen though when you're not traveling around though, makes life so much easier. I'd say the same even with a 17" MacBook Pro lol.
I've not had any real issues with Lion so far (fingers crossed). The only mild annoyance is the windows don't always tile in Mission Control and instead show up side by side overlapping. I'm not sure if this is a bug or a feature, it's inconsistent with when it shows up though. Apart from that, no problems. Not a fan of the new Address Book design though, not really a bug though.
Ok, first you say that Microsoft is making explorer and the Windows UI even more complicated, and say that Mac OS Aqua is much simpler, then you say that by making the interfaces even simpler, Apple is "dumbing down the computing world"?
It SHOULD be more complicated. I like having all of that information. Hiding it is ridiculous, I don't want an OS that feels like it was written for a moron.
@Roflcopter4b I like it when an OS is made to not make you feel like a moron too. It's hidden so for those who don't need it, it isn't there, and if you need it, you can access it. Face it, most people using computers aren't geeks, they're the mothers of geeks, their friends and family. My mother hasn't got a clue how to work a computer, she gets confused with the Sky box, yet put an iPad in front of her and she works it out in no time. This is the way the majority of people are like.
@TalesOfWar It's not hard to change. You can learn. People can learn. Young people have to know this stuff. Computers should be made so that people learn how they work, not to hide how they work.
@Roflcopter4b Why? We're getting to a point where you don't need to. In the Apple world, we're even further along with that mindset. It's like the car world. Back in the day you needed to know how to fix the thing because they always broke down, or you'd end up taking it to the garage every other month, these days you rarely need anything more major than new brake pads and tyres, and to change the oil now and then. Anything more serious, take it to a mechanic. Computers are getting there too.
@TalesOfWar I sincerely hope that day never comes. Computers are not simple, neither are cars. I promised myself I would never drive until I understand how they work. People who don't know how technology works should not be allowed to use it. Simple.
having some issues with wifi keeping disconnecting from my bt home hub but nevertheless i lone the cleaner ui and i am confident that apple will iron out these bumps
I will upgrade to Windows 8 if they release it with a Apple price tag. Meaning $29.99. Otherwise I'll probly stick with Windows 7. Unless there are some really big under the hood changes.
And please, MS, please go 64 bit only. Begin pushing everyone to the 64 bit platform like Apple already has.
@rand0m4productions i can pretty much get a full version of Windows for $40 if you know where to look at it. You can always find some cheaper deals. And Microsoft is software company, they earn money by selling the software. Apple already get high profit margin by selling a Mac hardware, so they won't mind to sell you Lion for $30 bucks. If Apple just selling the OS, it will cost you over 100, look at the price of Leopard ($125). You can get Windows 7 Home Premium little over $100
@rand0m4productions Also Microsoft has to consider all old users and corporate users. There still far more 32-bit machines than you can think of. By going 32-bit only, it will hurt Microsoft. Microsoft need to release 32-bit version. If you want go 64-bit, no one stops you buying a 64-bit Windows. Apple in other hand, pretty much abandoned all PowerPC users and all early Macbook users. So who get the hurt when Apple decided to go 64-bit only?
I'll wait for my next desktop machine with Lion on it. I need to be sure all my Spectrasonics & FXPansion instruments have been upgraded & not requiring Rosetta...
Lion is running well on my 27" 2011 iMac, however many of the gestures are not available on the magic mouse, and at the moment I am not in the position to fork out £60 for a magic tracked.
I think simplification is good, but apple should avoid going too far. I think that they haven't yet, but when 'library' was taken away, they got seriously close. Thankfully a bit of code in terminal gets it back, but apple are standing on thin ice, getting dangerously close to the line.
a mid 2010 15" dual-core i7 MacBook Pro- Lion works great.
a late 2010 11.6" C2D MacBook Air- Lion works great.
I think it was great idea to release both FCP's at the same time. FCPX will eventually get the features all the while benefiting from an enhanced UI. I'd stick with FCPX but I don't have a job revolving around video editing.

Well I've had a fairly stable experience accept boggy performance and consistant lockups. Also Ive had an issue when leaving imail open fore more then half an hour the whole system crawls untill the application is closed.

I can't run my emulators on Lion because it no longer supports Power Pc. It sucks!
XC0MB4TXEV0LV3D 6 months ago
@Technology102 It'll be big enough for smaller stuff or when you're not able to connect it to a bigger monitor, but doing design work, screen real estate is everything, the higher the resolution the better. I use mine with a Dell UltraSharp 24" 1920 x 1200 IPS display, it makes life so much easier than using the smaller laptop screen, even if the resolution is the same (which it is with a 17" MBP).
TalesOfWar 6 months ago
black screen of death after sleep I get that with my pc laptop alllllllll the time! Gah! it's frustrating, everything gets lost!
Halconandino 6 months ago
haven't tried lion yet. but on the windows side, i do agree with you right now, windows 8 doesn't look like much good is coming out of it except for tablets, ribbon looks like it would be easy for tablets, but i am hoping microsoft makes some key changes to make this a newer and better version then windows 7

its running fine for me

I had one kernel panic with Lion. The only time I've had it slow down on me was the first time I installed it but that was because Spotlight was indexing. The first patch came out not too long ago, and I do believe it addresses the Wifi issues people have been having.
Athos523 6 months ago
@Technology102 Yep. I use a 13" model and it's more than good enough for those. You'll want a bigger external screen though when you're not traveling around though, makes life so much easier. I'd say the same even with a 17" MacBook Pro lol.
TalesOfWar 6 months ago
Personally I love Final Cut Pro X as I always found the UI in Final Cut Pro of Express very intimidating.
themacbookone 6 months ago
I've not had any real issues with Lion so far (fingers crossed). The only mild annoyance is the windows don't always tile in Mission Control and instead show up side by side overlapping. I'm not sure if this is a bug or a feature, it's inconsistent with when it shows up though. Apart from that, no problems. Not a fan of the new Address Book design though, not really a bug though.

Ok, first you say that Microsoft is making explorer and the Windows UI even more complicated, and say that Mac OS Aqua is much simpler, then you say that by making the interfaces even simpler, Apple is "dumbing down the computing world"?
victorteles95 6 months ago
It SHOULD be more complicated. I like having all of that information. Hiding it is ridiculous, I don't want an OS that feels like it was written for a moron.
Roflcopter4b 6 months ago
@Roflcopter4b I like it when an OS is made to not make you feel like a moron too. It's hidden so for those who don't need it, it isn't there, and if you need it, you can access it. Face it, most people using computers aren't geeks, they're the mothers of geeks, their friends and family. My mother hasn't got a clue how to work a computer, she gets confused with the Sky box, yet put an iPad in front of her and she works it out in no time. This is the way the majority of people are like.
TalesOfWar 6 months ago
@TalesOfWar It's not hard to change. You can learn. People can learn. Young people have to know this stuff. Computers should be made so that people learn how they work, not to hide how they work.
Roflcopter4b 6 months ago
@Roflcopter4b Why? We're getting to a point where you don't need to. In the Apple world, we're even further along with that mindset. It's like the car world. Back in the day you needed to know how to fix the thing because they always broke down, or you'd end up taking it to the garage every other month, these days you rarely need anything more major than new brake pads and tyres, and to change the oil now and then. Anything more serious, take it to a mechanic. Computers are getting there too.
TalesOfWar 6 months ago
@TalesOfWar I sincerely hope that day never comes. Computers are not simple, neither are cars. I promised myself I would never drive until I understand how they work. People who don't know how technology works should not be allowed to use it. Simple.

Ashyton1 6 months ago
I will upgrade to Windows 8 if they release it with a Apple price tag. Meaning $29.99. Otherwise I'll probly stick with Windows 7. Unless there are some really big under the hood changes.
And please, MS, please go 64 bit only. Begin pushing everyone to the 64 bit platform like Apple already has.
rand0m4productions 6 months ago
@rand0m4productions i can pretty much get a full version of Windows for $40 if you know where to look at it. You can always find some cheaper deals. And Microsoft is software company, they earn money by selling the software. Apple already get high profit margin by selling a Mac hardware, so they won't mind to sell you Lion for $30 bucks. If Apple just selling the OS, it will cost you over 100, look at the price of Leopard ($125). You can get Windows 7 Home Premium little over $100
phantomellen 5 months ago

Have:
a late 2009 27" i7 iMac- Lion works great.
a mid 2010 15" dual-core i7 MacBook Pro- Lion works great.
a late 2010 11.6" C2D MacBook Air- Lion works great.
I think it was great idea to release both FCP's at the same time. FCPX will eventually get the features all the while benefiting from an enhanced UI. I'd stick with FCPX but I don't have a job revolving around video editing.
