  • have you read ,vikings by Ferguson ? he theorizes that the viking age came about because of the conflict between pagan vs christian.he point out that the first viking raid came 2 years after Charlemagne murdered saxons in his forced conversions.

  • @odinn62 I have not read it, but I heard about this theory, and it certainly sounds very credible to me. The Christians on the continent not only murdered pagans but also attacked their sacred places and killed the priests and priestesses. The numerous Viking raids against convents could perhaps be explained as vengeance.

  • Want a dumb story start with Noah . all stories and myths culture are traps if you need them goodluck ..

  • I've noticed similar things are hidden in much of the lore as well. The wolf in the Voluspa is a metaphor for Rome- the seat of Christian power, (the wolf nursed Romulus and Remus in Roman myth), swallowing the old religion of the North as the wolf swallows Odin in the story. Also, have you looked into the numerology? Most numbers used for spiritual and magical purposes in the lore are multiples of 3 and I believe there is more to this.

  • I think you should publish a cliff's notes type version of the lore or maybe a guide to understanding the lore with all the giant's names. Have you heard of an organization in North America called the Troth? They publish a lot of material for the academic study of the old religion.

  • Great video, thanks for posting this!~

  • write children's books! I can get you an artist

  • thank you. I've been looking for this information, without really knowing where to look. very important for me to find this video. The Great scholar of Greek myth, K. Kerenyi, undertook a similar project, in his book GODS OF THE GREEKS, he reconnects the names of the Gods with the connotations the names held,( much as you describe in names of the giants ) the result is a clear diagram of the human psyche, or a coherent commentary on the human mind/soul. Myths hold sacred information.

  • Hello :D,

are you paganist or wiccan ?

Your stories are soooo beautiful , I love mythology :D

  • I had a dream I still remember of the Goddess of the underworld rising up out of a hollow tree stump and I followed her down to her world and had some strange adventures. As a child I would fall into a state right as I started to drift into sleep...something like a lucid dream. Much later it occurred to me that perhaps I was travelling in a mystic realm. The dreams/travels where serial in content. I had companions that I seemed to have known for ages. Thank you for reminding me of all this.

  • You should write your own translation of the eddas I would buy it, you are right sacred knowledge is hidden in myths

  • @spindlegrinder Yes, I will have to do that...eventually. :)

  • I am watching all your videos thank you so much for these videos.......

  • God this woman is lovely. I understand now why men got into boats traveled far then sacked cities and got into fights with swords, spears and axes. Power to have women like this.

  • Hi. I live in America. My family on my mom's side is from North Ireland. My dad's side seems to have come from England and probably Denmark. Anyway I am drawn to the runes and I think I have a nack for them. I have a strong distaste for organization, but a strong desire to try rune magick. I will watch your channel.. Maybe I can learn something. Thank you

  • This is amazingly insightful. I do hope your research is being received well in whichever audience you are trying to get it out to for thinking like this feels to me really important in our age now of spiritual denial by the masses. Thank you, as you have inspired at least myself to pursue further understanding of my own personal mythology.

The story of your father's words is wonderful too. Like the music of your life hitting an intellectual climax in synchronicity. :)

  • omg you are so awesome!!! Subscribed!!!

  • This is fantasic! And to think, I just about passed over this series. The name translation is a real eye opener. Can you recomend a good dictionary ? Unless of course youve already published a translation. Wonderful Stuff!

  • You are lovely.

  • an author by the name of Ferguson writes in his work on vikings speculates that the viking raids on Christians was a result of Charlemagne wars on pagan saxons and the destruction of their sacred areas

  • @odinn62 That sounds very probable! Vengeance was deeply embedded in these cultures, so maybe they were returning in a likewise manner?

  • good stuff

have you ever thought about making a translation of your own with all the correct names and places?

  • we discovered the gateway of the sun...

our graves are in taklamakan and oout skulls litter the land in skalland...

one of ours killed olafiend on husøy he was allandhu

    norse called him hund

  • @1llanfairbairn it's not oout...it's our...

  • my ancestors were frøyabjørn...snorre was a monk

giants were not big people, they were numberless folk,

    with no face or personna.

there was no civil state...they were neither born...nor died.

  • my ancestors were frøyabjørn...snorre was a monk

giants were not big people, they were numberless folk,

    with no face or personna.

  • my ancestors were frøyabjørn...snorre was a monk

  • Isnt there a list with all names from north mythology translated?

  • Again, I cannot refute the truth of your words. I will insist that the birthplace of this LATEST incarnation of the gods and goddesses (so called the PIE pantheon) was ancient Anatolia and traveled with the ancestors as they populated parts of India, the Pontic Steppes and all of Europe in successive waves. The origin of the gods/goddesses (if one believes) and/or cosmos is, of course, more ancient.

  • 5-stars! you are called by the norns of your fate (wyrd) to be a leader in asatru!...your brain is even far more beautiful than your very beautiful face!...(lutheran culture does tend to try to cover-up asatru!)

  • thank you.

  • thank you for explaining Helgi's story, it makes so much sense, that his name means the holy one and what he went through. I know a lot of German so his name's meaning makes sense to me, since in German holy is "heilig" and I'm sure has the same root as Helgi, and "holy" for that matter. It frustrates me too when modern dictionaries don't give the definition and just state things like "a god's name, a tree, a troll's name, etc." but don't give you the meaning which is extremely crucial.

  • Your willingness to be vulnerable with your thoughts and explanations in this video is very touching. I believe you speak for many with this particular video. Thank you very much :)

  • I love your videos. It's like a breath of fresh air amidst a vast expanse of nothingness that one finds on youtube. Tell me, which english translation of the edda do you think is best?

  • @ReGreta9 Thank you! The only one I have kept is the first one that I bought, that of Carolyne Larrington. However, I think that all the translations are good in one way and, as I point out in this video, they all lack something, especially a systematised attempt to translate the names of characters and places. I would get a few different translations and compare them, sometimes they complement each other.

  • looking forward to your new channel - the education system unfortunately serves to brainwash and sheepify people... and we are supposed to appreciate this of course.. lol. the scandanavian heritage is one of trying to become the most complete man of woman that you can be.

we are instead "educated" to believe that you are either a jock and unintelligent, or a nerd and physically unimpressive for example. True heroes work on their weak points as well as honing their strong ones. Thor bless!

  • @roninbane73 I agree completely!

  • Hi Lady. I like your video. Have you considered lately that wolf puppies have sharp teeth, soft tongues, and can count to 6? I know you know that almost nothing is what it actually seems to be. ;-)

If the Universe allows it, I will send you a message in Icelandic after I learn the language, then hopefully one in Old Norse, but it will take awhile to reach even a small degree of the understanding you have of the languages and poetry.

    Wassail.

  • Nature is mans ENERGY FIELD REFLECTED UPON THE OUTSIDE. it is how Man is when he is perfect and 100% healthy, becos nature is man when he is healthy and in balance with himself. you can find in Nature somewhere medicine to Heal anything :).The silent wars in the amazon against the forest in which they burn and destroy the trees, is the battle within side themselves. :P

If we hurt the earth,we are hurting ourselves. The earth can live without man. But man cannot live without the earth.

    BE LOVE

  • it doesn't matter that u chose the myths of a specific culture - because as we go further and further back in time - it all leads to the same primal goddess, that all other gods and goddess are just branches of her, and she was universal. that is how u reach ppl - u show them a way home, regardless of their culture.

  • @adiiz100 Thank you, that is exactly my feeling too.

  • it is beautiful to hear how u found ur path , lady. and it is more beautiful when u understaand, that by threading it u make it wider and easier for others to follow. u spread the good, in a way.

  • WakeThePriestess channel <3 Just perfect Maria. I love your lectures. Thank you especially for this one. Perfect timing. I have deep trust in you. And inlightend respect for you. <3 amazingly clearminded, wise Goddess! Yours truely, Ida <3

  • I was taught the same thing in school. In America, every school here worships Rome and hates any other culture. This is what woke me up to paganism. As a Germanic descendant, I will always fight against roman materialism and love the cultural roots of our ancestors. Norse mythology is not childish in my opinion and I feel the same as you :)

  • Absolutely excellent video!

  • Amazing and enlightening as always...I am curious however, could you dive a little deeper into the spiritual side of what you believe. I feel that the christian religion has staind many peoples ability to believe in something other than "God" just a request though I do not want to get to personal or ask to much! Thanks and keep it up!

  • @Razzziell Oooo, and I thought I was already diving a bit too close into the personal... :) I dont want to preach you know, just provide information. But you are right. BUT: I have decided to try and stick as close to my academic background as I reasonably can on this channel, however, I am planning to go a lot more personally spiritual on a new channel soon, it is already there although with nothing uploaded as yet, WakeThePriestess channel...That is where your request may be satisfied soon...

  • Part 3.

I've "discovered" and been following a Pagan path for the past 12 years. Yet, only a couple of years ago, it occurred to me to research Polish & Slavic mythology and connect with my roots and the beliefs of my ancestors. Sadly, beyond the 1000+ year recorded history of Poland, there is hardly any information available about the beliefs of the ancients prior to 10th century :(

  • @idreamofwolfkisses Thank you for your response! I agree, it is very sad that so much of our spiritual past has been lost due to the fanaticism of a few...

  • Part 2.

Back then I had no reason to doubt that these "characters" and the elaborate stories about them were more than just myths and/or superstitions. However, that's when my passion for mythology sprouted.

  • Part 1.

Thank you for sharing your passion & research, Maria! I found the story of the 9-year old you calling out to the Gods with a promise that you'll never forget, especially enchanting! I love this whole series, but today's vid resonated with me the most.

Growing up in Poland, I was taught the same things!! Even though mythology was included in our studies from 6th grade all through High School, the attitudes were the same.

  • This is what I was taught in school too. There is another weird thing, the same thing happened with every ancient knowledge. Astrology, herbalism, old science etc. we have been taught to forget all these, as if thousands of years of ancient knowledge is only superstitious ramblings. I don't think so, but sometimes you have to look deeper to get the truth.

  • @Bulgroz99 I agree, the zeal of fanatics has made so much knowledge of our ancestors vanish...but this is the time of rekindling what was once there, and to drink the mead of Memory... :)
