In others, it can be an insult. Sometimes, children are humorous, joyful, and entertaining. Other times they're self-centered brats. I think the context in this video is valid.

I think the context of the metaphor gives us enough room to interpret it's meaning, a PR provided here.

onision being a moron aside, i definitely wouldn't want to be with someone who had over 20 partners. some say it's insecurity, but i think it is some instinct of guys, some can ignore it, some don't.

For the first part of your video, you fail to mention how Onision points out the woman in question only had sex with others 3/21 out of love. As you said, it's opinion, and with such opinionated people it's closer to slander than sharing.
Plus, if you know less about his 'ex' than him, why logically assume she didn't bring it on herself?

If a girl of legal age of consent chooses to go out on a friday night and have one night stand with a cute boy at the bar or in her Chem class,she isnt a slut for acting upon her sexuality? Say she does it every other weekend after she gets paid. That's 2 different people a month, so in a period of time at a 4 year college, that is roughly 72 guys. I don't see that as too many. Number's are too arbitrary to judge a person, and I personally support any girl adding supply to the sex market.

I've met Onision at a YouTube gathering here in Seattle. And while I agree with your assessment of him in principle, I must object to your characterization of him as a "child". He's an ass and a twit, to be sure...but he's not a child.
A child knows how to have fun, to play games, to make-believe; they are not necessarily petulant and self-centered. Yes, this is a semantic issue I'm taking with your video; I have no problem with your intended message. ;)

@BionicDance The label of child can be used in different contexts, as children (among many other things) have a variety of attributes. In some instances, child-like attributes can be a complement. In others, it can be an insult. Sometimes, children are humorous, joyful, and entertaining. Other times they're self-centered brats. I think the context in this video is valid.

@GrapplingIgnorance I still object; as someone who revels in the label of "child" in the context which I described, the contradictory double-definition often causes confusion as to what's meant.
It's kind of the way I object to the use of "vanilla" to describe something as bland or plain; as a vanilla fan, I know the flavor is neither of these things, and instead advocate the use of "whitebread" to describe something as bland.
The same with "child"; I feel the label is inaccurate and misleading.

That wouldn't remove the confusion, clear context, or additional explanation are the things which do that.
What you are suggesting is that it should be used, only in the contexts you don't object to, as though your subjective experience were the only correct one. While you are right to argue that the term can be used both ways, that doesn't support using it only your way.
Unless you are not objecting to what GI /said/; that is, that it can be used in different contexts.

@PurpleGhost I think we need separate terms to avoid these kinds of dual (and contradictory) meanings. Like, instead of "child" use "immature", perhaps, or "unsophisticated", or even just "rude". There are plenty of other terms to use which would not disparage a child-like nature in the wonder-and-fun sense.

@BionicDance It seems you're advocating for the demolition of metaphors, because people have different people connotations of the literal thing being used as a point of comparison. That doesn't make sense to me. Should I object to the use of calling King Richard "A Lion" because some people find literal lions to be frightening, some consider them lazy, and some consider them powerful? I think the context of the metaphor gives us enough room to interpret it's meaning, a PR provided here.

This isn't about using metaphors; that's fine. It's about how they're applied and to whom. Using the word "child" as you've done is, frankly, insulting to actual children AND is insulting to those of us who value an innocent and fun-loving child-like demeanor. Surely there is a better word for what you mean.

All I'm saying is that I, personally, find the word "child" being used this way to be an unfair characterization of actual children. And that I, as a chronological adult but one who feels more like a child than an adult psychologically--in the innocent and sense-of-wonder departments, specifically--DO feel mildly insulted by it.

@BionicDance If PR was talking about all children in this instance, I'd be completely on board with you, and I'd disagree with a claim that all children behave in a certain way. I'm not, however, disturbed, confused, or insulted by his metaphor of child vs adult being used to demonstrate immature vs. mature. Language is flexible enough to account for that without people needing to be insulted by it. If you prefer to be offended, however, I won't stand in your way.

And it doesn't seem unreasonable to me to go looking for a way to express the same sentiment without using terminology that characterizes one sub-set of humanity as being bad in some way. I do not think he DID "hit up all children", I do not think is a fair assmuption to make, that every statment, unless specified includes all members of the group discussed.
No. That just doesn't work in so many ways.
So that means he'd have to have specified 'all children', but wait -did he make some inclusive statement where he mentioned 'all' children? no.
So unless you make that assumption, then no, he didn't.

There was no distinction between children who are bratty and children who are not; the set called "children" is characterized by those who are bratty by the phrasing of the description.
That's how these things work; without a definitive distinction made, the words he used implied that all children fit the criteria he specified.

If this were a topic, where I thought that people were likely to believ,e that a single implied trait could characterize the whole group, I would be agreeing with you. However I do not think, that anyone is going to be confused into thinking, that /all/ children are bratty.
Everyone was a child once, and unless they believed themselves to have fit that stereotype (another issue unto itself) they are not going to mistakenly assume this.
The distinction isn't necessary.
